Day 2: Alghero loop tour (57km/36 miles) Your tour starts with a visit by bike to the old fortifications and the historic centre of Alghero, a splendid Aragonese city. Leaving Alghero, the tour continues to the prehistoric bastion of Nuraghe Palmavera, then on to Capo Caccia, an imposing rocky outcrop 168m high, looking out over the sea. Return to Alghero through countryside with vineyards and olive groves, producing world renowned olive oil and wines. Day 3: Alghero – Bosa (44km/27 miles) Cycle along the scenic coastal road across the cliffs overlooking the sea and admire the view of the Gulf of Alghero and Capo Caccia. Catch a glimpse of the pink, red and grey cliffs of Cape Marargiu. Your day ends in Bosa, a medieval town famous for its fine embroidery and gold filigree works. Day 4: Bosa loop (26 or 62km/16 or 39 miles) The short leg: Meander through the vineyards along the Malvasia wine route, tasting the famous DOC wines at the various caves along the way. The long leg: Ring route around the area where the griffon vultures nest, going up towards Montresta and passing by the Nuraghe Appiu, as far as the spectacular rocky outcrops and inlets of Capo Marrargiu, where if you are lucky you’ll be able to see the swooping flight of this rare breed of Mediterranean Vulture. Day 5: Bosa – Santu Lussurgiu (54km/34 miles) The route is flanked by vineyards and olive groves as far as Flussio and Tinnura, two small towns famous for their reed and wicker baskets and their murals. Then on through the pasturelands of Sagama, with Mediterranean bush landscape stretching as far as the eye can see, until you reach the springs of San Leonardo, the richest area in water in the whole of Sardinia. Day 6: Santa Cristina Loop (39km/24 miles) Visit the rural museum in Santu Lussurgiu and cycle to the archaeological site of Santa Cristina to admire the impressive sacred well dating back 1800BC. ™ www.justsardinia.co.uk reservations 01202 484858 Cycle Sardinia – North West Sardinia Cycle Tour Day 7: Santu Lussurgiu – San Salvatore di Sinis (50km/33 miles) Today the land slopes down to the coast to the Marine Protected Area of the Sinis, home to pink flamingos and herons. Here the unpaved road flanks a series of white quartz beaches. Then through a charming fishermen’s hamlet, where you will find one of the most important early Christian churches in Sardinia. Continue to Tharros, a fascinating archaeological site with a wealth of Phoenician and Roman remains. The tour ends at San Salvatore Sinis. Day 8: Departure day After breakfast, transfer to airport. Alghero (Night 1 & 2) Hotel El Balear The hotel is 400m from the centre of Alghero and is ideal for reaching the city’s historically rich streets and alleys on foot, as well as the lively boutiques and shops in the heart of the old town. This charming property is composed of various restored old buildings that were recently refurbished following their original architecture and the rooms are elegantly decorated and fully equipped. Other hotels that may be used in Bosa: Hotel Sa Pischedda Santu Lussurgiu (Night 5 & 6) Antica Dimora del Gruccione The Antica Dimora del Gruccione is a 17th century mansion of Spanish design, entirely made of stone with arches, barrelled ceilings, wooden beams and ancient wrought iron throughout the structure, and furnished with comfortable original antiques, many from the family of the owner. The property features unique rooms, each different from the other, and offers a warm hospitality. The management (still from the family of the original owners) believes passionately that a hotel is more than just a room but must also offer food of exceptional quality. San Salvatore Sinis (Night 7) Sa Pedrera Sa Pedrera is a charming countryside complex located in San Salvatore Sinis, a tiny village in the heartland of the Sinis peninsula. Its U-shape layout resembles that of a Spanish hacienda with 14 lovely decorated rooms surrounding the flourishing garden in the central courtyard. The hotel has a restaurant and comfortable living room.
