We ( Jim Kurose, Keith Ross, and Addison-Wesley-Longman) think you will find this textbook to be very different than the other computer networking books that are currently available. Perhaps the most unique and innovative feature of this textbook is that it is online and accessible through a Web browser. We believe that our online format has several things going for it. First, an online text can be accessed from any browser in the world, so a student (or any other reader) can gain access to the book at anytime from anyplace. Second, as all of us Internet enthusiasts know, much of the best material describing the intricacies of the Internet is in the Internet itself. Our hyperlinks, embedded in a coherent context, provide the reader direct access to some of the best sites relating to computer networks and Internet protocols. The links do not only point to RFCs but also to sites that are more pedagogic in nature, including home-brewed pages on particular aspects of Internet technology and articles appearing in online trade magazines. Being online also allows us to include many interactive features, including direct access to the Traceroute program, direct access to search engines for Internet Drafts, Java applets that animate difficult concepts, and (in the near future) direct access to streaming audio. Being online enables us to use more fonts and colors (both within the text and in diagrams), making the text both perky and cheerful. Finally, an online format will allow us to frequently release new editions (say, every year), which will enable the text to keep pace with this rapidly changing field. Another unusual feature of the text is its Internet focus. Most of the existing textbooks begin with a broader perspective and address the Internet as just as one of many computer network technologies. We instead put Internet protocols in the spotlight, and use the Internet protocols as motivation for studying some of the more fundamental computer networking concepts. But why put the Internet in the spotlight, why not some other networking technology such as ATM? Most computer networking students have had already significant "hands on" experience with the Internet (e.g., surfing the Web and sending e-mail at the very least) before taking a course on computer networks. We have found that modern-day students in computer science and electrical engineering, being intensive users of the Internet, are enormously curious about what is under the hood of the Internet. Thus, it is easy to get students excited about computer networking when using the Internet as your guiding vehicle. A second reason for the Internet focus is that in recent years computer networking has become synonymous with the Internet. This wasn't the case five-to-ten years ago, when there was a lot of talk about ATM LANs and applications direclty interfacing with ATM (without passing through TCP/IP). But we have now reached the point where just about all data traffic is carried over the Internet or intranets. Furthermore, streaming audio and video have recently become commonplace in the Internet, and someday telephony may be too. Because our book has an Internet focus, it is organized around a five-layer Internet architecture rather than around the more traditional seven-layer OSI architecture. Another unique feature of this book is that it is also top-down in how the content is organized. As we mentioned above, this text, as almost all computer networks textbooks, uses a layered architectural model to organize the content. He is currently a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts, where he is also co-director of the Networking Research Laboratory of the Multimedia Systems Laboratory. He is currently serving a term as Chairman of the Department of Computer Science. Professor Kurose was a Visiting Scientist at IBM Research during the 1990/91 academic year, and at INRIA and at EURECOM, both in Sophia Antipolis, France, during the 1997/98 academic year. His research interests include real-time and multimedia communication, network and operating system support for servers, and modeling and performance evaluation. Dr. Kurose is the past Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Communications and of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. He has been active in the program committees for IEEE Infocom, ACM SIGCOMM, and ACM SIGMETRICS conferences for a number of years. He is the six-time recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award from the National Technological University (NTU), the recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Science and Natural Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts, and the recipient of the 1996 Outstanding Teaching Award of the Northeast Association of Graduate Schools.

United States Magistrate Judge / DEFENDANT’S REPLY TO THE GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSE TO MOTION TO EXCLUDE DNA EVIDENCE NOW COMES, the defendant, Daniel Gissantaner, by and through his attorney, Joanna C. Kloet, Assistant Federal Public Defender, and hereby requests to file this Reply to the Government’s Response to the Defendant’s Motion to Exclude DNA Evidence, as authorized by Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 12 and Local Criminal Rules 47.1 and 47.2. This case was filed in Federal Court after the defendant was acquitted of the charge of felon in possession of a firearm after a July 8, 2016, hearing before the Michigan Department of Corrections, where the only apparent difference between the evidence available to the respective authorities is the DNA likelihood ratio (“LR”) now proffered by the Federal Government. Accordingly, the defense submitted the underlying Motion to Exclude DNA Evidence as a dispositive pre-trial motion. Local Criminal Rule 47.1 allows the Court to permit or require further briefing on dispositive motions following a response. Alternatively, if the Court determines the underlying Motion is non-dispositive, the defense requests leave to file this Reply under Local Case 1:17-cr-00130-JTN ECF No. 53 filed 02/23/18 PageID.2040 Page 2 of 10 Criminal Rule 47.2.

    Software on the Witness Stand: What Should It Take for Us to Trust It? Sergey Bratus1, Ashlyn Lembree2, Anna Shubina1 1 Institute for Security, Technology, and Society, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 2 Franklin Pierce Law Center, Concord, NH 1 Motivation We discuss the growing trend of electronic evidence, created automatically by autonomously running software, being used in both civil and criminal court cases. We discuss trustworthiness requirements that we believe should be applied to such software and platforms it runs on. We show that courts tend to regard computer-generated materials as inherently trustworthy evidence, ignoring many software and platform trustworthiness problems well known to computer security researchers. We outline the technical challenges in making evidence-generating software trustworthy and the role Trusted Computing can play in addressing them. This paper is structured as follows: Part I is a case study of electronic evidence in a “file sharing" copyright infringement case, potential trustworthiness issues involved, and ways we believe they should be addressed with state-of-the-art computing practices. Part II is a legal analysis of issues and practices surrounding the use of software-generated evidence by courts. Part I: The Case Study and Technical Challenges 2 Introduction Recently the first author was asked to serve as an expert witness in a civil lawsuit, in which the plaintiffs alleged violation of their copyrights by the defendant by way of a peer-to-peer network. Mavis Roy, of Hudson, New Hampshire, had been charged by four record labels with downloading and distributing hundreds of songs from the Internet. The principal kind of evidence that the plaintiffs provided to the defendant's counsel (the second author), and which, judging by their expert witness' report, they planned to use in court to prove their version of events that implied the defendant's guilt, was a long print-out of a computer program.

Broadly speaking, an ‘enclosure’ method attempts n to solve such a problem over a specified region of interest, commonly a box subset of R , where n is the number of unknowns. Subdivision (or branch-and-bound) is a commonly- applied scheme, wherein a starting box is successively subdivided into sub-boxes; sub-boxes for which a proof of non-existence of a solution can be completed are discarded. As a component of such, a boundary method attempts to exploit the properties of component functions over the boundary of a sub-box, without considering their behaviour within it. Two main types of non-existence proof are considered for polynomial systems over boxes or sub-boxes. Firstly, the topological degree of a system of equations (considered as a n n mapping from R to R ) can be computed over a sub-box, which possesses a root-counting property. Together with an enclosure for the determinant of the Jacobian, the existence (or otherwise) of roots in the sub-box can be ascertained.
