Above all, I thank God whose hand has given me the strength, courage, boldness, ability, and guidance to attempt to make a meaningful contribution to this life. iv Abstract The imprint that the Second World War has left on our global civilization is one that we are still trying to decipher. Les Années noires (The Dark Years or the Nazi Occupation) are still a murky part of France‘s national history as well as the history of the Second World War. Women‘s voices have often been left out of a traditionally male dominated body of wartime writings, though their experiences are an integral part of that history and merit further study. Focusing on the discourses found in women‘s testimonial voices found in French texts about les Années noires will help illuminate our perceptions of this historical period. Irène Némirovsky, Marguerite Duras and Charlotte Delbo bear witness to some of the tragedies of their epoque and their testimonial voices help to elucidate this shadowy past by revealing often overlooked and unnoticed particularities of women‘s experiences. Literature concretizes these women‘s experiences, rendering them forever accessible to readers who, in essence, are implicated in the witnessing process. The project presents a five chapter study beginning with an introduction that sets forth the theoretical framework. The second chapter focuses on a fictional novel by Irène Némirovsky, Suite française, which provides an eyewitness account of the Exodus from Paris in June 1940. Her novel exposes the deep social and political divisions in French society at that time and offers a cold-hearted yet truthful depiction of the beginning of life under the Occupation. The third chapter will look into journal/mémoire writing as seen in La Douleur by Marguerite Duras, whose narrative voice testifies about collaboration, resistance, deportation, victimization, reintegration and the profound psychological pain of les Années noires. The following chapter explores Charlotte Delbo‘s Mesure de nos jours, in which the author captures the struggle to ‗return‘ to life that she and others experienced. Delbo‘s realistic and frank writing style limits the extermination camp experience and life after it to what it was, unthinkable and inexplicable. The final chapter focuses on the implications these voices carry for our current and future lives. After the war, the crimes committed by the French against the Jews became a taboo which slowly transformed over the years into what is today considered to be an obsession with the topic. These events are best demonstrated through the 1942 Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup in which Parisian authorities gathered over 13,000 Jews, detaining over half of them in the Vélodrome d’Hiver, an indoor cycling arena in Paris, for almost a week without food, water, or sanitation.

    Lives in Limbo: Memory, History, and Entrapment in the Temporal Gateway Film Sarah Casey Benyahia A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies University of Essex October 2018 Abstract This thesis examines the ways in which contemporary cinema from a range of different countries, incorporating a variety of styles and genres, explores the relationship to the past of people living in the present who are affected by traumatic national histories. These films, which I’ve grouped under the term ‘temporal gateway’, focus on the ways in which characters’ experiences of temporality are fragmented, and cause and effect relationships are loosened as a result of their situations. Rather than a recreation of historical events, these films are concerned with questions of how to remember the past without being defined and trapped by it: often exploring past events at a remove through techniques of flashback and mise-en-abyme. This thesis argues that a fuller understanding of how relationships to the past are represented in what have traditionally been seen as different ‘national’ cinemas is enabled by the hybridity and indeterminacy of the temporal gateway films, which don’t fit neatly into existing categories discussed and defined in memory studies. This thesis employs an interdisciplinary approach in order to draw out the features of the temporal gateway film, demonstrating how the central protagonist, the character whose life is in limbo, personifies the experience of living through the past in the present. This experience relates to the specifics of a post-trauma society but also to a wider encounter with disrupted temporality as a feature of contemporary life.

    1 A Queer Premiere: Jean Cocteau’s The Typewriter Introduction Late in April 1941, toward the close of the first Parisian theatre season fol- lowing the Defeat, Jean Cocteau’s La Machine à écrire (The Typewriter) opened, then closed, then reopened at the Théâtre Hébertot. Written in the style of a detective drama, the play starred the actor generally known—at least in the entertainment world at the time—as Cocteau’s sometime lover and perpetual companion, Jean Marais, as identical twin brothers. The re- views are curiously reticent about what exactly occurred at the Hébertot, and historians and critics offer sometimes contradictory pieces of a puzzle that, even when carefully put together, forms an incomplete picture. The fragments are, however, intriguing. Merrill Rosenberg describes how, on the evening of April 29, 1941, the dress rehearsal (répétition génerale), sponsored “as a gala” by the daily Paris-Soir and attended by various “dig- nitaries,” caused in the Hébertot’s auditorium a demonstration by members of the Parti Populaire Français (PPF). This disruption prompted Vichy’s ambas- sador to Paris, Fernand de Brinon, to order the withdrawal of the production (“Vichy’s Theatrical Venture” 136). Francis Steegmuller describes the disor- der that greeted the Typewriter premiere and the revival of Les Parents Terribles (at the Gymnase later that year): “stink bombs exploded in the theatres, and hoodlums filled the aisles and climbed onto the stage, shouting obscenities at Cocteau and Marais as a couple” (442).1 Patrick Marsh too notes that these plays “were seriously disrupted by violent scenes fomented by fascist sym- pathizers and members of the Parti Populaire Français” (“Le Théâtre 1 2 THE DRAMA OF FALLEN FRANCE Français .

    Occupy/Be occupied Collaboration in Europe, 1939-1945 Barbara LAMBAUER ABSTRACT Collaboration in wartime not only concerns relations between the occupiers and occupied populations but also the assistance given by any government to a criminal regime. During the Second World War, the collaboration of governments and citizens was a crucial factor in the maintenance of German dominance in continental Europe. It was, moreover, precisely this assistance that allowed for the absolutely unprecedented dimensions of the Holocaust, a crime perpetrated on a European scale. The occupation of a territory is a common feature of war and brings with it acts of both collaboration and resistance. The development of national consciousness from the end of the 18th century and the growing identification of citizens with the state changed the way such behaviour was viewed, a moral judgement being attributed to loyalty to the state, and to treason against it. During the Second World War, and in connection with the crimes committed by Nazi Germany, the term “collaboration” acquired the particularly negative connotations that it has today. It cannot be denied that collaboration by governments as well as by individual citizens was a fundamental element in the functioning of German-occupied Europe. Moreover, unlike the explicit ideological engagement of some Europeans in the Nazi cause, it was by no means a marginal phenomenon. Nor was it limited only to countries occupied by the Wehrmacht: the governments of independent countries such as Finland, Hungary, Romania or Bulgaria collaborated, as did those of neutral countries such as Switzerland, Sweden and Portugal, albeit to varying degrees.

    1 L’histoire des femmes au défi de l’histoire de la déportation Christine Bard, professeure d’histoire contemporaine à l’Université d’Angers. Cette conférence a été donnée le 8 mars 2013 avant la lecture de Qui rapportera ces paroles ? de Charlotte Delbo, par la Cie OeilduDo et 11 autres compagnies partenaires, mise en lecture de Virginie Brochard, Centre Jean Carmet, Mûrs-Erigné (49). 8 mars 2013 : quel sens donner à l’œuvre de Charlotte Delbo pour une date symbolique, la célébration de la journée internationale des femmes, lancée par l’Internationale des femmes socialistes il y a un siècle ? Ce serait assez simple si l’on ne considérait que la résistance féminine. Le parti communiste, dont Charlotte Delbo était proche, l’a beaucoup fait dans les années 1950, en mettant en avant la figure de Danielle Casanova, fondatrice de l’Union des jeunes filles de France, déportée à Auschwitz avec Charlotte Delbo, elle y meurt du typhus. Marie-Claude Vaillant-Couturier, revenue d’Auschwitz, incarnera la voix du parti dans les années d’après-guerre. Ce n’est pas le cas de Charlotte Delbo, qui n’est pas représentative de ces femmes cadres. Certes l’engagement communiste est un idéal vibrant pour cette fille d’immigrés italiens qui a trouvé à l’Université populaire de Paris des camarades et un mari, Georges Dudach, arrêté en même temps qu’elle, fusillé au Mont Valérien en mai 1942 à 28 ans. A la prison, puis à Compiègne, Auschwitz et Ravensbrück, elle est une politique parmi des politiques. C’est cette déportation-là qui sera mise en évidence à la Libération, notamment par l’ADIR : association des déportées et internées de la résistance.
