I cannot at present say uch of the overseer but I hope the best of him. He shall also receive my orders to follow your directions which as yet I think us never have given him. Dr. Wright I doubt not keeps a constant correspondence with you. He is at present in a very good sb te of health I do hope and have noe reason to doubt but that he is an honest man in all his dealings. He has as he always professes him self a trew friend and a fai Ynful servant of yours. I am satisfied noe person in the island can be more industrious than he is but how things answer you w ill both know from his accounts. I shall yhow your letter oo your attoumeys and with them w ill consult what is most fit to be don in the affair you write about him. Our island lias bin very sickly of late and much people has dyde but I dont know of any of your particular fri .ids (onl, old Colonel Tho as Clark). I am Your real friend and servant December 17th 1709. P eter J eywood. Letter has no Jamaican markings whatsoever but is inac bed per the packet Q D C and in the text, heywood mentions that the the packet is sailing, so there is little doubt that this letter did go by the DUMMjSR Packet Service. To the best of my knowledge, unless tip are any more similu items in this lot, this is the first Dumner pack letter I have ever seen or recorded. It is an exceedingly rare iuem.

I t has a Lonuon re c e iv in g marking or 1st February 1710 and has been charged l/6d. This was the correct rate for a single packet le t t e r to London a 3 per .Edward Dutn ier’ s increased nt» tea of 1704 and I think confirms it as a genuine Dumraer letter. Item ;0 o^i., L.:~u^er.

S im ilar hand3tamps were also used at other colonies at roughly the same time. The one you mention as being in the Customs House archives is not Jamaican but from St. Kitts. I also know of a similar ty^e used from the Virgin Islands. Two of the three items l have seen from Jamaica are on undated covers and only year date is possible to ascertain. These are 1810 and 1311. Yours is the first I have recorded with fu ll date. The So. Kitts item and the Virgin itarns d iffer from the Jamaica mark and I would assume that the various colonies were each supplied with one such marking).

Letoers from Tin cton which did not need inland postage were s till charged at 1/-, and owing to complaints from the London Post O ffic e re warding the aramount o f money due to the Jamaican Post Office due to errors made in separating letters from the post towns and Kingston whilst the new rate was in operation, it was decided to send out to Kingston the i ‘P2 handstamp, which could then be stamped on the letters indicating that only 1/- was due to be collected etc).

(T e '5c* looks very American to me out I am not fam iliar ;8d w ith it. I doubt very uch whether it is a cents in any case. The T in a triangle is struck on lea .era to denote a deficiency and should be accompanied toy eith er a ny^s endorsement of am mount due or a gold centime tax marking. Jo charge appeal's to h ve been made. One thing is certain. Prom what I have seen of these TR7 and TR8 markings, they only seem to have been applied to mail which should never have come to Jamaica in the norm 1 course of things. ail which nor ally passed in transit through Jamaica does not have them. The only suggestion I can offer is tha, you try and trace the seal on the envelope. The la tin JEA GLORIA alb AS and the design is evidently an arms of some sort and you could pos ibly check on this with the relevant authority in Lon n. I would be interested in hearing from you should, anything come of it.

11. Entire letter from Curacao dated 8 June 1854 to Senors Ramires y Oro, Mansanillo. This was the place now c a lle d M anzanillo in Cuba, a large and flourishing seaport. Received a t SANTIAGO DE CUBA on 19 June 1854 and handstamped w ith the 30 Reis da te r in green, s ig n ify in g that such an ammount was due to be paid on that letter. If the letter had been prepaid from this place, the mark would have been struck in red signifying as such. The private ship letter charge from Cuba to Jamaica or for letters brought by private ship from Jamaica to Cuba was 30 Reis. I have letters with this mark in both red and green proving this. The green *2* indicates 2 Reis due for inland conveyance to Mansanillo from Santiago de Cuba and the JA.AYCA in oval struck in green and applied also at Santiago simply indicates that it has been received from that island. None of these markings are scarce. I have a one stamp collection of Cuba from the early Spanish days upto about 1860 which I occasionally add to and one or two pre-stamp entires from and to there. I have seen lots of these items.

12. What a shame to include this item in amongst these. It is entirely wrongly described. It is an entire letter from Walter Laurie at Woodhall Estate in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica to William Kennedy Esq.., Merchant at Morant Bay, East End, Jamaica. Dated 1 December 1789. Posted at KINGSTOR with type T1 (a very rare marking and the finest that I have ever seen) and charged at 4d sterling, the current rate for a letter going upto 40 miles at that time. l.Iorant Bay was 35 miles from Kingston. As I said, this letter is wrongly described. It is not a ship letter and has never seen the sea, except perhaps when it arrived at Morant Bay. I do not know designated the Woodhall as being in England but he did not know anything hbout Jamaica. It was a very famous estate. The information you give here about this marking being used as a Ship Letter handstamp on incoming letters is entirely erroneous. I know of only about 6 or 7 examples and none of them were used in this way. This particular fine iarm should be written-up correctly in its proper pride of place. Incidently, the village of Woodhall, which lias now a post office of its own, is situated on this estate or its former location. PiHifc.STysir from tne c o lle c tio n oi‘ +~r. ^.H. P a trick . 1. Letter and accounts from brooks & fates & Co., Liverpool, dated 24th October 1833. Letter carried by the Royal Mint and was a Consignee*s letter. As such, this would be exempted from a ll Ship letter charges, but not from inland postage. Received KIUGSTOH where i t received the KIhG-STOii SHIP LETTER type SL2.
