The first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule in 1957, Ghana’s ethnic diversity, safety and friendly locals make it a must-visit for any traveler wanting to experience West African culture.

Join us as we celebrate the 44th annual Memphis in May International Festival and learn about the incredible cultures, cuisines, customs and commerce of the Republic of Ghana.

Known as much for its traditional culture as it is for its music scene, restaurants and nightclubs, top attractions include historic Jamestown and Independence Square as well as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum, a site dedicated to the Ghanaian politician and revolutionary who led the country to independence. Not to be missed is the colorful and culturally significant Makola Market located in the heart of the capital. 5- NIGHT STAY CAPE COAST The attractive fishing port of Cape Coast is steeped in history. Settled at various pointsby Portuguese, Danish, Swedish and Dutch traders, it became the coastal headquarters of Britain’s in 1664, and later served as the first capital of the Gold Coast. The town’s antiquity is reflected in a varied range of architectural relics spanning four centuries, most notably the hulking seafront presence of , but also in its organic shape of tangled roads hugging the curves of low hills. The whitewashed castles at Cape Coast and are the most impressive of Ghana’s remaining slave forts. Built in the 17th and 15th centuries respectively, both served as holding stations for enslaved peoples en route to Europe and the Americas. 2 - NIGHT STAY ITINERARY MARCH 11-19, 2020 MARCH 11 Wednesday Travel day. MARCH 12 Thursday Arrive Kokota International Airport. Transfer to hotel by private coach. Hotel transfer and check-in will be followed by light evening refreshments. Overnight Accra. (D)

MARCH 13 Friday After a short cultural orientation session, you will explore Accra, the bustling capital city with your group guide. Tonight’s group Welcome Dinner is enhanced by a cultural performance. Overnight Accra. (B, L, D)

MARCH 14 Saturday Today’s day trip outside of Accra takes you north to Botanical Garden for insight into native plants and their medicinal uses and then onward to the village of Krobo-Odumase known for its glass bead making tradition. Enjoy a group lunch before returning to Accra for time and dinner on your own. Overnight Accra. (B, L) MARCH 15 Sunday Today we travel west to Cape Coast. En route, you will stop over in the town of Assin Manso on the banks of the Pra River, site where captives traveling south were made to take their last baths before entering slave castles to await ships for the Americas. A group dinner will follow our hotel check-in and leisure time. Overnight Cape Coast. (B, L, D)

MARCH 16 Monday This morning’s excursion includes a tour of St. George’s Castle in Elmina, the first and oldest European building in sub- Saharan Africa. See quiet fishing villages on the way back to tour the larger Cape Coast Castle, another UNESCO World Heritage site, and home to a museum on slavery and European colonization. Overnight Cape Coast. (B, L, D) MARCH 17 Tuesday Today, you will travel back to Accra and visit the W.E.B. DuBois Center for Pan Africanism and enjoy time at the Accra Arts Center. MARCH 18 Wednesday Today is planned for relaxation with a time at palm-lined Bojo Beach. For those wishing further adventure, optional added-fee activities include: -, second largest city in Ghana and capital of the Ashanti Kingdom: After a 35-minute flight to Kumasi you spend the day exploring with stops at the palace of the Asantehene (chief of the Ashantis) as well as several craft villages where you learn about the ethnic traditions of Kente weaving and Adinkra symbols. (Approx. 9 hours). -Shai Hills Resource Reserve: After a 90-minute drive outside the city, you will embark on a walking tour of a small game reserve offer an opportunity to see baboons, antelope, savanna and forest birds as well as views of Accra and the surrounding region. (Approx. 8 hours) Tonight’s farewell group dinner makes as great time to share the day’s experiences with one another. Overnight Accra. (B, L, D)

MARCH 19 Thursday Though it is departure day, there is time to soak up more experiences. Following hotel check out, you will enjoy a traditional craft lesson and a visit the Artist Alliance Gallery plus time for last minute shopping. The group will dine together before the early evening transfer to the airport and onward journeys. (B, D)
