Desire, Fantasy, and the Writing of Lesbos-sur-Seine, 1880-1939 by Lowry Gene Martin, II A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in French And the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Michael Lucey, Chair Professor Ann Smock Professor Barbara Spackman Professor Charis Thompson Fall 2010 1 Abstract Desire, Fantasy, and the Writing of Lesbos-sur-Seine, 1880-1939 by Lowry Gene Martin, II Doctor of Philosophy in French University of California, Berkeley Professor Michael Lucey, Chair My dissertation challenges a commonly accepted view that literary representations of lesbianism were merely a momentary fashion, linked to Symbolist and Decadent movements in literature. More than a trope for artistic sterility, the explosion of Sapphic representation emblematized the social fractures prevalent during the Third Republic. This dissertation illustrates that “Sapphism”—in literature and beyond—became a type of shorthand to discuss everything from declining natality to changing gender roles, from military fears to urban space to the nature of artistic production. Using legal, racial and other social discourses to provide different kinds of contextualization, my readings of such canonical authors as Zola, Proust, and Colette reveal how lesbian depictions were not merely about sexuality or art but addressed a host of social and political anxieties. Beginning with an analysis of censorship of lesbian themed novels between 1885 and 1895, I demonstrate the randomness of censorship and its failure to stem the growing number of lesbian depictions. This chapter is followed by an investigation of the role of racial and ethnic othering of the lesbian in French literature as a means to discuss French fears of contamination from its colonies and perceived threats from other world powers. -

À ce texte et à ces photos, nous avons entrepris l'ajout de notes (à l'intérieur même du texte) de même que des liens vers différentes fiches, la plupart biographiques, se rapportant aux personnes qui y sont mentionnés ou encore des informations, historiques, se rapportant aux lieux aux habitudes de l'époque et ainsi de suite, ouvrant ainsi la porte à la «petite histoire» du café-concert aux chercheurs et curieux qui pourront, à partir du tout, entreprendre des recherches plus poussées. À cet égard, nous ne saurions recommander, au préalable, la lecture du livre «Les Cafés-Concerts» d'André Chadourne (E. Dentu, 1889). -

Pictures of Prostitution, 1850-1910 Images of Prostitution Prostitution in the 19th century adopted many guises: pierreusesworking illegally on wasteland in the dead of night, filles "en carte" (registered prostitutes) and filles "insoumises" (unregistered girls) soliciting in public places, verseuses (waitresses) employed in brasseries à femmes, brothel girls, and courtesans playing host to their admirers in luxurious townhouses. Its ever-changing nature, which defied easy definition, was an enduring obsession among novelists, poets, playwrights, composers, painters, and sculptors. Most artists in the 19th century and first half of the 20th century addressed the splendor and misery of prostitution, which also became a favourite theme in the emerging art forms of photography and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec later the cinema. The city was undergoing a radical transformation. A New Babylon for some, the ‘City of Light’ for others, it offered artists any number of new venues (high society salons, opera boxes, licensed brothels, cafés, and boulevards) in which to observe the highly choreographed rituals of sex for sale. These often contrasting depictions offer a blend of acute observation and imagination, indiscretion and objectivity, clinical detail and unbridled fantasy. -

This left him free to produce small models for such commercial manufacturers of porcelain and bronze, who were beginning to flourish in the 1840s. Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (June 12, 1824, Anizy-le-Château - June 4, 1887, Sèvres) was a French sculptor and painter. He was the father of Louis-Robert Carrier- Belleuse. He was one of the most prolific and versatile sculptors of the 19th century, producing portrait busts, monuments and ideal works, as well as exploiting to the full the commercial opportunities offered by developing technology for the mass production of small-scale sculpture and decorative wares.
