  • In-School Mentoring Activity Manual
In-School Mentoring Activity Manual Introducing the Manual and the value of Play Welcome to the In-School Mentoring Program. We hope you are as excited as we are about participating in a program designed to help boost kids’ self-confidence. Sometimes mentors and mentees can get stumped for activities they can do together in one hour. This manual serves as a resource guide. Here you will find new activities, games and craft ideas. Also provided are tried and true hints and advice from current mentors in the field. General information on children’s stages of development is included. This background information may help you to chose a more accurate game to play with your mentee based on his/her skill level, or may remind you of the outside factors your mentee is dealing with at his/her age. Mentors often ask “How does play activity benefit mentees?” Here is a brief response on the value of play… “On the playground of life, game playing equips each of us with the “rules of the game.” As youngsters, games taught us how to work together, to accommodate, and to help one another. Through playful moments, children can act out real-life situations. In imagined contexts, they can learn how to solve problems, look for options, and resolve conflicts. By winning or losing at games, children experience the real world but in less harsh fashion. Children learn about their environment and how to relate to other children, as well as grown-ups. They learn about healthy competition and about trying to do their best.

  • HOT SPOT: 'MLB Tonight'
HOT SPOT: 'MLB Tonight' 04.07.2016 As Major League Baseball gets underway for the 2016 season, Lava Studio took MLB Network's MLB Tonight for a turn toward the meta with its graphically-intense new open for the nightly baseball show. Lava's Creative Director David Woodward and Animation Director Kyle Reynolds devised a show open that takes the viewer inside baseball - not just inside the game, but inside the actual baseball itself. Viewers see the construction of an abstracted baseball, and inside it we see ballparks, highlights, and all the textures associated with the game. As the ball is wrapped, layered, covered and stitched, the world of baseball comes alive. "MLB Network's creative team encouraged us to take risks and to be unafraid of breaking with sports graphic traditions," says Lava Studio owner Robert Kirkpatrick. "After three previous successful show packages, we had achieved a level of trust and a smooth working relationship that made this kind of bold collaboration possible." In addition to the open, Lava's animation and design team created over 40 unique graphic elements for MLB Tonight, and each makes unexpected creative use of the textures and materials of baseball. Previously, Lava's Art Direction for Intentional Talk on MLB Network received two PromaxBDA Awards for art direction and an Emmy nomination for graphic design. A second Emmy nomination for MLB Central was recently announced. UNCLE WICK Written by Gabe Delahaye EXT. DUBAI - NIGHT The glittering skyscrapers of oil rich Dubai loom over the Arabian sea. We pass through them and down the coast... ...to a PALATIAL ESTATE: luscious green gardens in the middle of the desert, an olympic-sized swimming pool, ARMED GUARDS lining the roof and patrolling the perimeter... We push into... INT. LIBRARY - PALATIAL ESTATE - DUBAI - CONTINUOUS House music thuds in the background. There is a party happening at the house, but this BRASS AND LEATHER LIBRARY is where serious business happens. ANGLE ON: an IMPERIOUS CRIME LORD sipping tea at the head of a massive antique table, surrounded by his HENCHMEN. This is HAMZA (60s) head of “The Nizam,” a league of assassins. HAMZA We’re not having this discussion again. The peace with Skalnikoff and The Colony has been to everyone’s financial benefit. They take the lion’s share of western assignments, but the Nizam controls the east, and with it-- TARIK This isn’t peace. This is Skalnikoff waiting for our guard to drop, so he can strike. If you don’t come for him, he’ll come for you, father. ANGLE ON: TARIK (30s) at the opposite end of the table. He has the bearing of an ungrateful prince: controlled by his father and desperate to take his place. HAMZA I admire your ambition, my son, but you still have much to learn. In the background, the CLUB MUSIC cuts out and we hear SCREAMS. The men at the table perk up, on high alert. A HENCHMAN peaks out the window, shakes his head to signal: the roof is empty.
