Since the early 50’s of the last century it was very much involved in exercises and training with the United States Air Force following the Agreements that Spain signed with the United States in 1953. That is why when Spain joined NATO in 1982 the Spanish Air Force was already somewhat familiar with NATO doctrine and procedures. In the following years, cooperation with NATO was increased dramatically through exercises and, when necessary, in operations. The Spanish Air Force is now ready and well prepared to contribute to the common defence of NATO nations and to participate in NATO led operations whenever the Spanish government decides to do so. -

An Autarkic Science: Physics, Culture, and Power in Franco's Spain
NE´ STOR HERRAN* AND XAVIER ROQUE´ ** An Autarkic Science: Physics, Culture, and Power in Franco’s Spain ABSTRACT We discuss the rise of modern physics in Spain during Francoism (1939–1975) within the context of culture, power, and the ongoing historical assessment of science during the dictatorship. Contrary to the idea that Francoist policy was indifferent if not hostile to modern science, and that ideology did not go deeper than the rhetorical surface, we discuss the ways in which the physical sciences took advantage of, and in turn were used by, the regime to promote international relations, further the autarkic economy, and ultimately generate power. In order to understand what physics meant within the National Catholic political order, we contrast the situation in the post–Civil War decades with the situation before the war. First we discuss how the war trans- formed the physicists’ community, molding it around certain key fields. We then turn to the work of right-wing ideologues and conservative scientists and philosophers, who stressed the spiritual dimension of the discipline and argued for the integration of science into the Christian scheme of the world. The cultural realignment of the discipline coincided with the institutional changes that harnessed physics to the military and economic needs of the autarkic state, which we discuss in the final section. To conclude, we reflect upon the demise of autarkic physics in the late 1960s and the overall implications of our argument with regard to the development of physics in Spain. *OSU Ecce Terra, Tour 46/00, Bureau 412, Case courrier FL 112, Universite´ Pierre et Marie Curie; 4 place Jussieu, 75005 Paris, France; [email protected]. -
Practicantes De Medicina Militares Del Ejército Del Aire (1940-1941) Saumell Bonet JE.1, Siles González J.2 Sanidad Mil
Military medicine assistants of the Air Force SUMMARY: Background and aims: The Air Force (Spain) was created in October 1939 and its Corps of Health in February 1940, in which medical assistant noncommissioned officers were integrated. -

Keywords: NATO, Spanish Air Force, United States Air Force. -

Ambassador at Paris, he had just completed four years service as HM Ambassador at Berlin where he had achieved a reputation as a staunch anti-Nazi and as an anti-appeaser. By the end of his tenure at Paris in October 1939, however, he was widely accused of being a "defeatist/appeaser" and his reputation has never recovered. When Phipps left Berlin, German military power was in its ascendancy. He arrived in Paris at the age of 62 when French military preparations were at their nadir and the Popular Front was disintegrating. These factors led him to support that French political faction which was opposed to a resolute French policy and which by inclination was not Anglophile. -
Allusions and Illusions in Spanish Architecture, 1898-1953
QUOTATION: What does history have in store for architecture today? Allusions and Illusions in Spanish Architecture, 1898-1953 Brett Tippey Kent State University Abstract Spanish architecture during the first half of the twentieth century might rightfully be characterized as obsessed with quotation. By the late nineteenth century, historicist reproductions had already appeared throughout the Iberian Peninsula, yet the cataclysmic events of 1898, when the homeland of the conquistadores lost its last colonies, precipitated a dramatic increase in architectural mimesis. While most buildings produced in this manner were broad stylistic references (Smith Ibarra’s Casa Garay, Rucabado’s Casa Allende, Palacios’ Circle of Fine Arts and even Gaudi’s fascination with Spanish Gothic), others were conceived as verbatim reproductions of specific relics from Spain’s glory days. The most frequently cited buildings were the Alhambra (Chueca’s 1953 text Manifiesto de la Alhambra) and the monastery-palace at El Escorial (Zuazo’s Nuevos Ministerios and Gutiérrez Soto’s Ministry of the Air). More controversially, despite the reverence most historiographic accounts pay to the first avant-garde works produced in Spain in the 1930s, these too could be characterized as a quotation of projects designed in the 1920s by Le Corbusier and Erich Mendelsohn. Interestingly, Spanish buildings that cite the Alhambra or the works of central European masters are typically regarded by historians as richly nuanced specimens of regional modernity, whereas buildings that reference El Escorial are invariably described as a mis-step of worn out historicism in the otherwise meritorious trajectory of twentieth century Spanish architecture from GATEPAC in the 1930s, to what Pozo, Lahuerta and Sambricio have aptly described as the “Brilliant 50s”. -
