The decisions you make in the coming months will be extremely important for the next phase of your child’s academic life. It is crucial for you, along with your child, to gather as much information as you can so that you and your child will be able to make informed decisions. Over the past few years, the High School Admissions Process has become fairer for all participants and easier to navigate. Since its introduction in 2003, the process has worked better and better. In 2008, more than 80% of students received one of their top five choices for high school for the third consecutive year and more than 90% of students received one of their choices. In New York City, there are hundreds of high schools where students can strengthen the skills they already have, develop new ones, and explore new interests and subjects. I encourage you to use this High School Admissions Process as an opportunity to talk as a family about the future and your child’s strengths and goals. Please read about all of our schools, and be sure to attend the parent forums, workshops and high school fairs. Best wishes for success as you move on to high school. i Welcome to the New York City Public High School Admissions Process Every eligible student is assured entrance into one of the New York City public high schools. To file an application, you must be a resident of New York City and meet 8th grade promotional standards. Your mission, together with your parents and counselor, is to complete the high school application process by selecting and applying to the high school programs of greatest interest to you. The purpose of this Directory is to help you learn about the New York City high schools and their program offerings and identify those high school programs that are right for you. Familiarize Yourself with the High School Directory • Create a list of factors that are important to you in choosing a school: your interest(s) and the school’s special programs, size, location and travel time. Use Making Choices: A High School Admissions Prep Book to help you explore these factors and identify the many options available to you. • Browse through this Directory to become familiar with the different kinds of high schools/programs that are offered, and list those that meet your needs. • Consider whether you want to apply to any one or more of the eight (8) schools that require the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) or to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. For more information, refer to their Directory pages and see the 2008-2009 Specialized High School Information on pages iv-v and the Specialized High Schools Student Handbook. • When considering an Audition program, prepare by reading the audition requirements provided on the school’s page. • Review the Directory and write down any questions you may want to discuss with your school counselor. • You can even use our new search function to find the schools that best match your interest areas online! You are able to select from information in drop down menus, by zip code and even plug in keywords to bring up the schools that match your search criteria. Visit our website at http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/High/Directory to find a high school that is right for you. Make Your Choices and Complete the High School Application • Plan to attend the Citywide High School Fair, which is being held on September 20 and 21, and the Borough High School Fairs on October 18 and 19. These Fairs will provide an excellent opportunity for you and your family to become familiar with different schools. • Participate in Parent Forums, Workshops, Information Sessions and Open Houses with your parents. Prepare questions for school representatives and determine the amount of time it takes to travel to and from each of the schools you are interested in attending. • Together with your parents and counselor, choose the schools/programs to which you want to apply and enter them on your high school application. You may select up to twelve (12) programs in addition to the Specialized High Schools. Please refer to the sample on the next page, “Application for Admission to High School.” • Remember the following: ° If you have a zoned high school you wish to attend, you must include the school’s zoned program as one of your choices. ° If you are a student in a continuing 8th grade high school and you wish to attend 9th grade in that school, you must include the program as one of your choices. • Consider the programs to which you are applying, then prioritize and list them on your application in the section entitled “High School Programs.” • You will receive a match to your highest ranked school that also ranked you. Please remember that you will attend the school to which you have been matched. ii Completing the High School Application Specialized High 2009 Application for Admission to High School Schools: • If you are applying to one or Dear Student and Parent: Please complete this page more of the six (6) performing Local Zoned School: arts programs at Fiorello H.
