Keep looking around the pavilion and take note of our new bar modeled after an 18th century Ukrainian house with thatch roofing. Imagine what it was like to raise a family in such a simple structure! Sitting at “Baba’s” kitchen table is a treat like nothing else. Enjoying the simplicity and tasteful helpings of traditional hand-made perogies and cabbage rolls. Nothing “store bought” on our Festival food plates. Finally, our Festival After-Hours event returns Saturday evening at 9:00pm. Open to all. Our performers will be out of their stage costumes and back into street clothes. Come spend the evening with those you saw on stage and meet a new friend. This year our live Ukrainian Zabava Band from Edmonton, Steppe, will play everything from the fastest polkas, to the coziest waltz. But don’t leave before 10:30pm because around that time you will witness the infamous Canadian Ukrainian tradition of the “Kolomyka”. Signed: 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the lives, movements and performances of dancers in a Romanian urban folk ensemble from an anthropological perspective. Drawing on an extended period of fieldwork in the Romanian city of Timi şoara, it gives an inside view of participation in organised cultural performances involving a local way of moving, in an area with an on-going interest in local and regional identity. It proposes that twenty- first century regional identities in southeastern Europe and beyond, can be manifested through participation in performances of local dance, music and song and by doing so, it reveals that the experiences of dancers has the potential to uncover deeper understandings of contemporary socio-political changes. This micro-study of collective behaviour, dance knowledge acquisition and performance training of ensemble dancers in Timi şoara enhances the understanding of the culture of dance and dancers within similar ensembles and dance groups in other locations. Through an investigation of the micro aspects of dancers’ lives, both on stage in the front region, and off stage in the back region, it explores connections between local dance performances, their participants, and locality and the city. -

Glinka Dnipropetrovsk Academy of Music Lyvarna street 10, 49044 Dnipro, Ukraine e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Bandura art is a unique phenomenon of Ukrainian culture, inextricably linked with the history of the Ukrainian people. The study is dedicated to one of the most tragic periods in the history of bandura art, that of the 1920s–1940s, during which the Bolsheviks were creating, expanding and strengthening the Soviet Union. Art in a multinational state at this time was supposed to be national by form and socialist by content in accordance with the concept of Bolshevik cultural policy; it also had to serve Soviet propaganda. Bandura art has always been national by its content, and professional by its form, so conflict was inevitable. The Bolsheviks embodied their cultural policy through administrative and power methods: they created numerous bandurist ensembles and imposed a repertoire that glorified the Communist Party and the Soviet system. As a result, the development of bandura art stagnated significantly, although it did not die completely. At the same time, in the post-war years this policy provoked the emigration of many professional bandurists to the USA and Canada, thus promoting the active spread of bandura art in the Ukrainian Diaspora. A CRISIS IN RELATIONS: LEADERS OF THE USSR AND UKRAINIAN SSR DURING THE HOLODOMOR Valerii Vasyliev During the first two decades of the twentieth century, the population of the Russian Empire, and then of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), periodically experienced food shortages. Thus, widespread famine broke out in Ukraine in 1921–22, and the years 1925 and 1928–29 were also marked by famine.1 In the latter half of the 1920s the leadership of the Communist Party, headed by Joseph Stalin, attempted to overcome episodic food shortages in various regions of the USSR by creating large state reserves of grain. These reserves were used for the centralized distribution of grain to industrial centers and the Red Army, as well as for export.2 In 1931, collectivization and dekulakization produced a severe food shortage in the country. On 1 January 1932 state grain reserves, concentrated mainly in the nepfond (untouchable fund) and mobfond (mobilization fund), amounted to 2,033 million tonnes.3 From October 1931, these reserves were managed by a powerful state organization, the Reserve Committee, led by the head of the USSR Gosplan (State Planning Committee), Valerian Kuibyshev, and his deputy, the head of the OGPU (All-Union State Political Administration or secret police), Genrikh Yagoda.4 Since one tonne of grain sufficed to provide a year’s normal bread ration for three people, the available state reserves could adequately supply 12–13 million people with grain until the new harvest of 1932.
