DSR Season 3 www.MZP-TV.co.uk MZP Monster Zero Productions (c) 2008 TEASER FADE IN: INT. COMPUTER ROOM - EVENING MARSHALL sits close to his PC screen, fingers rapidly rattling across the keys. His face is a mask of focus. He’s in a bright, cluttered computer room of sorts - shelves full of hunks of components and parts fill the closest wall. From the screen, sounds of GUNFIRE and EXPLOSIONS ring out. Commands are barked from soldier to soldier. VOICE (from PC) Where’s that air support, damn it? MARSHALL Uh... coming, coming! Just a second! Fingers a blur, PAN ROUND Marshall as he brings up a drop- down menu of options. He uses the mouse to select something - and moments later the ROAR of jet engines passing overhead rings out. MARSHALL (cont'd) Incoming! EXPLOSIONS sound out, and Marshall flinches from the screen. VOICE (from PC) Alright, second unit, move in! Adopt attack formation CRM one- fourteen! MARSHAL CRM one-fourteen, got it. PAN ROUND further. A better view of the screen shows several MARINES moving through a bombed out town. GUNFIRE rings out, bullets PINGING off the floor, and the marines dive for cover. MARINE (from PC) Sniper! MARSHALL (wide-eyed) Great Caesar’s ghost! Oh... oh, oh, uh, wait, wait... 2. MARINE (from PC) We’re taking heavy fire! All units, fall back! Get to the - KABOOM! The screen JUDDERS as a huge explosion rips through the city. MARSHALL Guys! Guys? Hello? Guys! Flustered, Marshall rattles at the keyboard again, then opens up some menus with the mouse. And he finally clicks on an option marked ‘Pause.’ The screen freezes. Marshall rolls back on his reclining chair - and the rest of the room is revealed at last. Marshall’s in what was once a small study, the decor betraying its suburban roots, which is now halfway between an IT lab and a gaming room. The box and manuals for ‘Call Of Duty 4’ sit beside the monitor as Marshall wearily rubs his eyes. VOICE (over PC) What’s the matter, JuJu? Had enough? Marshall looks up. An IM box is blinking on the corner of his screen. He scowls, rolling back to his place - and fixing on a headset microphone. MARSHALL Not by a long shot yet, my shadowy nemesis. (French accent) ‘Ow you English say? I one more time, mac, unclog my nose in your direction, sons of a window- dresser! The IM box is labelled ‘Tetch49,’ a pair of LEDs moving in time with the speaker’s voice. Marshall’s IM box is marked ‘Serious JuJu.’ TETCH49 Then would you care to make this interesting? Marshall raises an eyebrow - sneakily unpausing the game. MARSHALL What did you have in mind? 3. TETCH49 A little wager. My undead Guild versus your Night Elves. Tomorrow night, PvP. Winner takes all. MARSHALL All what? TETCH49 Enough orange weapons and armour to put Lord Kazzak to shame. Marshall’s troops start moving into position - and a set of CROSSHAIRS spring up. MARSHALL Sounds interesting... maybe you’d like to raise the stakes a little? TETCH49 (scoffs) To what? The crosshairs zoom in and line up on another SOLDIER - and BLAM! The guy goes down! TETCH49 (cont'd) Hey! MARSHALL (punches the air) I am Tiger Woods! And the study door opens - to reveal CARRIE. CARRIE Marshall? Startled, his hands fly to the headset, fumbling with it before finally swatting it to the floor. Marshall spins in his chair, blocking the screen and trying to look casual. MARSHALL (slowly) Yes? A beat as Carrie glances round the room. Marshall fixes a Roger Moore-esque grin in place. CARRIE Dinner’s on the table, honey. I thought you might like to see your children at some point today. MARSHALL (still smiling) I would like that very much. 4. Carrie shoots him a look, then exits the room. Marshall returns to the PC, retrieving his headset. TETCH49 (as volume returns) ... -irty rotten cheating son of a - MARSHALL Sorry, friend, but those are the rules of the war in which we find ourselves. TETCH49 (seething) I’ll see you in Teldrassil, JuJu. Smirking triumphantly, Marshall flicks off the monitor and exits the room, flicking the lights off as he leaves: INT. FLINKMAN HOUSEHOLD - DINING ROOM - NEXT As a TV game show blares in the background, Marshall and Carrie sit around a round dinner table. Marshall is tickling four-year-old MITCHELL, the child giggling happily, while an eighteen-month-old toddler - MARCUS - bangs his spoon on his baby seat. Adjusted to the constant decibel level in the household by now, Carrie stirs her food absently as she speaks: CARRIE ... and anyway, after speaking to Adams and Ryall all afternoon, I figured it was the least they could do to put in a good word or two for me. Marshall looks up at last. MARSHALL Sorry, sweetheart - a good word about what? CARRIE (blinks) About me getting back into intelligence? MARSHALL What? CARRIE Marshall! Have you even been listening? He stammers, nodding towards the two kids. 5. CARRIE (cont'd) (sighs) Okay, look. Let me go over this again. I’m only thinking part-time for now, because I still have lots to do for the boys every day, but we both know your mother’s more than happy to come over from LA to help out. MARSHALL Well, uh, yeah, I mean, why wouldn’t she, she’s my mom, but, uh, she’s... she’s also my mom. With our children. Are we still sure that’s the best idea? CARRIE All I know is that I’ve spent the last four years taking care of our kids, and I’m way past ready to start getting my life back on track. (beat) And speaking of that... did you speak to Kendall? MARSHALL (beat) About what? CARRIE You know, about the opening in Project Black Hole? The colour drains from Marshall’s face - he either forgot himself or didn’t want her to remember about it. CARRIE (cont'd) I mean, after working with Kendall before I’m sure he’d be willing to put in a good reference for me to Director Winters, so... Marshall realises he’s meant to be taking over the sentence. MARSHALL So! So. So... no. I haven’t. Carrie sags, pouting as she digs her fork into her meal. MARSHALL (cont'd) But I will. I promise. You know, uh, just as soon as I finish that... thing - hey, do we have any more of those potatoes left? 6. Carrie nods, conceding defeat for now, but Marshall keeps a guilty eye on her as we CUT TO: INT. FLINKMAN HOUSEHOLD - COMPUTER ROOM - NEXT CLOSE IN on the computer screen, blackened out as the system is on standby. The screen suddenly FLICKERS, bringing up Marshall’s desktop - a Van Halen concert shot. The ‘Call Of Duty’ game is still up on screen. Something GLISTENS across the screen - almost like running water - and then also across the keyboard! The game suddenly resumes, the sounds of gunfire and explosions returning. Until another jet passes overhead - and the area around Marshall’s troops is hit by an AIR STRIKE! As the screen fades to a blood red, all of Marshall’s marines sprawled on the floor, a message fades in: ‘Tetch49 Wins!’ The message flashes a few times, before ‘Play Again?’ Appears beneath it, and we: BLACK OUT: 7. ETHAN turns to the assembled team - JAI, MIA, KENDALL, QUINN, RAYEN, SARA and JULIA - all wearing suitably horrified expressions. ETHAN This is the third wolf attack in as many weeks. Each new disturbance has seen an escalation in size, scale and scope. JAI What’s the body count on that last ‘disturbance’? ETHAN Almost fifty. SARA My goodness... JAI Man’s just saying, Ethan. Don’t get all bunched up about it. JULIA Quinn’s right. • Labarthe Thomas Alias Toma-L
LABARTHE THOMAS ALIAS TOMA-L Frevo BIOGRAPHY Thomas Labarthe was born in France in 1975. He lives and works in Nantes. It was at the Pompidou Centre in October 2001 that Thomas Labarthe frst discovered Jean Dubuffet. The retrospective exhibition was like “a massive shock to my system”. His frst canvas, Mala bestia emerged three months later. Like André Breton and Jean Miro before him Thomas threw himself into a creative furry. The time for exhibitions would come later in Paris, Nantes and Tours. In 2009, Thomas met Sebastien Fritsch who would soon become his agent. Together, the two men set up a series of exhibitions and creative projects in the South of France. His artistic force is centrifugal and soon attracted other creative contributors: Film makers, photographers, authors, graphic designer, dancers and set designers united around him and numerous colla- borations ensued. The following decade proved to be one of the utmost creativity: his powerful graphic style was received en- thusiastically by the artistic community and with wide acclaim in Barcelona, Brussels and in Paris at the Galerie W Landau and Halle Saint Pierre. Museum. In May 2019, Toma-L then set up in the Frevo Gallery in Greenwich Village which has remained the seat of his activity in New York ever since. He toils in the fertile felds of Free Figuration, Lyrical Abstraction and of course Outsider Art and his efforts are not limited to canvas work. He regularly branches out to create hybrid projects in a move which echoes Gilles Deleuze theory that “The notion of a ‘territory’ can only really be qualifed by the action we take to get out of it” found in his work Abécédaire*.

  • The Post-Madrid Face of Al Qaeda
Rohan Gunaratna The Post-Madrid Face of Al Qaeda For two-and-a-half years after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States’ most iconic landmarks, Al Qaeda and its associated groups struck Western targets only in the global South, in places such as Bali, Casablanca, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, Chechnya, and Tunisia. Despite the September 11 attacks and the continuing threat, Europe re- mained an active center for terrorist support activity—propaganda, recruit- ment, fundraising, and procurement. As support cells were enmeshed in the socioeconomic, cultural, and political fabric of migrant and diaspora Mus- lims, European law enforcement, security, and intelligence services targeted only the operational cells that appeared on their radar screen. It was consid- ered politically incorrect to revise the legislative framework to target several hundred terrorist support cells active on European soil. Some Europeans even believed that Al Qaeda had spared the continent because of its policy tolerating terrorist support infrastructure. Although successive attacks against Jewish and British targets in Istanbul in November 2003 demonstrated Al Qaeda’s intentions, capabilities, and opportunities for attack on the continent, European law enforcement, intel- ligence, and security services did not take the threat seriously. Although the Turkish case clearly demonstrated that terrorists planning to strike could survive undetected for years, there was neither a proper appreciation of the threat nor an appreciable effort to increase the quality of intelligence by penetrating the politicized and radicalized segments of Europe’s diaspora and migrant communities. Even the fact that three of the four September 11 suicide pilots were recruited from the heart of Europe did not generate the same sense of urgency in Europe that prevailed in the United States.

  • The Earliest Generations of the Goetbloet Alias Bloetgoet Family,” New Netherland Connections 12 (2007): 12-15
The following pages are a preprint edition of: John Blythe Dobson, “The earliest generations of the Goetbloet alias Bloetgoet family,” New Netherland Connections 12 (2007): 12-15. The earliest generations of the Goetbloet alias Bloetgoet family by John Blythe Dobson In 1917, Mrs. Annie Bloodgood Parker published a brief account of the parentage of the New Nether- land immigrant Frans Janszen Bloetgoet.1 Considering the very limited material then accessible, this article accomplished its purpose quite well, and apart from a few minor misprints is essentially not in need of correction. As Parker notes, the Gouda baptismal register for 1575-1625 is unfortunately lost; and indeed, her sole source is the marriage register of the Dutch Reformed Church of Gouda. For those records, I have tentatively accepted her readings, although there is one small point of doubt (discussed below) which should be cleared up if it has not been already.2 I cannot claim to have made a thorough search of the existing literature on this family, and were there any likelihood of my finding time to do so in the foreseeable future I should never have considered publishing these remarks in so rough a state. The purpose of this note is merely to supplement Parker’s account with material from some recently-indexed records, and to suggest some possibilities for further research. Before proceeding with a revision of Parker’s account, I should like to point out that the name Bloetgoet is extremely rare, and before the end of the seventeenth century, at least, seems to have been confined almost exclusively to the provinces of North and South Holland.
