Abundan en esta familia los conductos secretores lisígenos con aceites esenciales en su interior. Las hojas de ruda al ser estrujadas desprenden un olor desagradable. Plantas mesófitas o xerófitas. T manipurensis laid eggs linearly along the margins of tender leaves. Eggs hatched in 6.8 d and the larval duration was 3.4 and 8.2 d for larvae I and II, respectively. After 20.2 h as prepupa, T manipurensis grew into pupa; adult emergence occurred in 4 d. Each female laid 34±7 eggs and the mean longevity of the adult was 10.2 d. Increase in thrips numbers correlated with the age of the gall: 15 individ- uals/gall occurred in young (4—10 d) galls, whereas 28 occurred in mature (20 d) galls, and 36 in old (25 d) galls. Male-female ratio in old galls was 1:5. Mature galls included a homogeneous tissue structure, made of 12-15 layers of parenchyma cells with no distinction into spongy and palisade cells. -

AUSTRALIAN NATURAL PRODUCT RESEARCH J. R. PRICE Chtmzical Research Laboratories, C.S.I.R.O., Melbourne, Australia At a meeting of this kind, a considerable proportion of the papers delivered will inevitably be concerned with work carried out in the host country. I have assumed, therefore, that the purpose of the Organizing Committee in inviting me to speak to you about Australian natural product chemistry was to provide a framework for the picture which thesepaperswill present. To do this it will be necessary forme to tell you a little about the historical background. We are told that, in 1788, the first year ofEuropean settlement in Australia, the essential oil of Eucalyptus piperita was distilled and used medicinally as a substitute for oil of peppermint. But it seems unlikely that the enterprise shown by those early settlers had any significant inftuence on the utilization or study of the country's plant products1 • It was not until 1852 that the distillation of essential oils was investigated seriously, and was later placed on a commercial basis, by a man named J oseph Bosisto, who set up a still, only a few miles from here, outside Melbourne. I t is not clear whether the credit for this action is due solely to Bosisto, because at about the same time a second, and very significant, character appeared on the scene. This was Ferdinand von Mueller, a German from Rostock, who became Government Botanist ofVictoria in 1853 and made a magnificant contribu tion to the botanical exploration of Australia and to the systematic study and description of the Australian ftora. -

Though these and others floral traits are cur- rently used in the circumscription of species in Galipeinae, few studies have shown in detail in which way (postgenital or congenital) and to what extent these fusions occur. To elucidate these anatomical condi- tions, a structural study of the flowers of the Galipeinae species was carried out. METHODS: Flowers of six species from three genera of Galipeinae were studied in their morphology, anatomy and development with stereomicroscopy, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). KEY RESULTS: The floral tube is formed by synorganization of stamens with petals in all species, and exhibits threemain patterns: (1) Conchocarpus heterophyllus and C. minutiflorus have a floral tube formed by marginal coherence/adherence of petals and filaments due to interwining trichomes (postgenital connection); (2) Erythrochiton brasiliensis has a tube formed by congenital fusion of petals and filaments; and (3) Gali- pea jasminiflora and Conchocarpus macrophyllus have a tube formed distally with the first pattern, and proximally with the second pattern. -

Appelhans1,2 · Jun Wen2 Received: 6 December 2018 / Accepted: 8 January 2020 / Published online: 1 February 2020 © The Author(s) 2020 Abstract The genus Ivodea is endemic to Madagascar and the Comoros and consists of 30 species. This study is the frst to include the genus in a molecular phylogenetic analysis. We sequenced the plastid trnL–trnF and the nuclear ITS regions for three Ivodea species and revealed that the genus is monophyletic and most closely related to the African and Malagasy Vepris, refuting earlier suggestions of a close relationship between Ivodea and the Asian, Malesian, Australasian and Pacifc genera Euodia and Melicope. Ivodea and Vepris provide another example of closely related pairs of Rutaceous groups that have drupaceous and capsular/follicular fruits, respectively, thus further confrming that fruit types are not suited to delimit sub- families in Rutaceae, as has often been done in the past. Ivodea was the last of the seven Malagasy genera to be included in the Rutaceae phylogeny, making it possible to conduct an assessment of biogeographic afnities of the genera that occur on the island. Our assessments based on sister-group relationships suggest that the eight lineages (representing seven genera) of Malagasy Rutaceae either have African or have Asian afnities. Two lineages have an African origin, and one lineage has an Asian origin. Taxon sampling is insufcient to interpret the directionality of dispersal events in the remaining lineages. -

Abstract Xero- and scleromorphic adaptations are obviously shown by Australian plants, in response to the Australian climate and edaphic factors. Since these adaptations overlap, there are problems separating the two. Some qualitative hypotheses about the distinction between xero- and scleromorphic characters have been proposed. This research is an effort to quantitatively determine xeromorphic characters in some members of the Proteaceae, in order to elaborate upon some of the existing hypotheses about these characters. Twenty three species of Banksia, 16 species of Grevillea and 6 species of Orites were sectioned and observed under the light micrscope and measurements were made of the stomata! depressions, margin recurvations, cuticle thickness and hair dimensions. -

In Vitro Pollen Germination of Five Citrus Species

Abstract The aim of present study is In vitro germination of the pollen grains of five Citrus species belonging to the family Rutaceae viz., Citrus aurantium L. var., aurantium Hook.f., C. limon (L.) Brum. f., C. paradisii Macfad, C. reticulata Blanco and C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck. using “hanging drop” technique. The germination was checked up to 48 weeks, for the pollen stored at different temperatures like 4ºC, -20ºC, -30ºC and -60ºC. The study indicates that low temperature and low relative humidity is better than high temperature and humidity with respect to pollen germination capacity and viability. Freeze dryer (-60ºC) seems to be the best method to maintain pollen viability of stored pollen grains for a long period of time. Among five species Citrus aurantium, C. limon and C. sinensis showed high percentage of germination as compared to C. reticulata and C. paradisii. Introduction To increase the yield and requirement of desired pollen, genetic conservation and storage is desirable for Rutaceae is a large, predominantly tropical and plants breeders, since pollen is known to transmit subtropical family, consisting of 150–162 genera and important heritable characters. Plant breeders could have 1500–2096 species, with three main centers of diversity access to a facility called pollen bank, from where any Tropical America, southern Africa, and Australia (Kubitzki body can draw pollen of its own choice in the process of et al., 2011). -
