All anyone wants to do is curl up with their favorite man, movie or book and hibernate. On my off nights, I’m one of those people too, I have to admit. This time of year I can’t wait to curl up with my good book— paper or of the E variety. Since I write about and live music, naturally music books are what I love, so here are a few recommendations of new and slightly-not-new books in the genre I’ve read recently. Tracey Thorn, leader of Everything But the Girl, starts my binge with Bedsit Disco Queen: How I Grew Up and Tried To Be a Popstar (hardcover). Whether you’re a fan or are even just familiar with her group or solo work, you’ll love this lyricist’s take on the memoir. Much like reading James Frey, it takes you a chapter or two to get her style of storytelling, but once you do there are great stories of love, kids, inspiring Nirvana, and living by my next author. Belinda Carlisle’s Lips Unsealed: A Memoir (paperback or Kindle). The Go-Gos never do anything simply. Despite the fact that these stories have been told 10 different ways by various members and outlets, Belinda’s firsthand account of debauchery and drug use left at least one Go-Go bothered. But the takeaway from “Lips” isn’t anything negative about her fellow bandmates—as she puts most of the blame of events on herself—but more about her crippling decades-long addiction to coke. I was actually fatigued reading her sober/stoned back and forth; I yelled at the book at least once. A happy ending for sure, but what a ride. While we’re literally talking smack, right after that I tortured myself with the wildly unorthodox but brilliant The Dirt by Mötley Crüe. Written back and forth, chapter by chapter by each band member from different points of view but chronologically, it’s a master class in not just storytelling, but editing. Plus, they out-drug any Go-Go any day of the week. In fact, they event cross paths with Belinda along the way. Finally, from strictly a music nerd perspective, Facing The Other Way: The Story of 4AD (hardcover or Google Play E-book) peels the layers off of the ‘80s’ most mysterious and influential record label, revealing the secrets behind such influential and illusive bands of our time as Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Modern English and Bauhaus. Unlike the others, I wouldn’t go into this one blind, but if you have a love of the goth era, it’s basically your new bible.
