The Last Skipjacks Project Page 1 “GRANNY’S” Skipjack Notebook The Last Skipjacks Project Page 2 Editor’s note: The following list was compiled around the year 2000 by the late Granville Hale, one of the volunteer builders of the Skipjack Nathan of Dorchester. He gave it to Capt. Frank Newton, who volunteered as captain on the Nathan for more than fifteen years, and who passed it along to me for the Last Skipjacks Project. When Capt. Newton handed me this bundle of stapled, photocopied pages, I realized what an exceptional resource it was and that it needed to be shared. To enhance its usefulness, instead of simply scanning the pages, I have retyped them to allow the file to be searchable online. I also have linked the existing skipjacks to their pages on The Last Skipjacks Project website. Otherwise, the format and layout is as Hale presented the information. He presents the lists as: • Appendix A, Surviving Skipjacks as of 2000 • Appendix B, Vessel List by year built, with introduction on sources; and • Appendix C, Dorchester County Skipjacks by location where built. Whether these “appendices” originally were attached to a larger volume is unknown. I have made few changes to Granny Hale’s original text, other than correcting obvious typing errors. Within the lists, names of the boats have been corrected only for typing errors. Any other changes within the lists are identified in footnotes. The Last Skipjacks Project Page 5 Appendix B Vessel List - Skipjacks The vessels listed in this appendix are the result of research from several different sources. Most of the data came from volumes of the “Merchant Vessels of the United States,” published by the Treasury Department. Supplemental data was derived from newspapers, personal interviews, and books and pamphlets by historians like H. Chapelle, M. Brewington, and P. Vojtech. Some newspaper articles say that the Skipjack fleet numbered over 1000 boats at the turn of the century (1900). The primary reason that research provides less than the 1000 boat figure is that local folklore referred to any sailboat that worked the oyster beds as a “Skipjack.” This often included “Bugeyes,” “Sloops,” “Schooners,” and various “Bateaux” that came to be known as the Skipjack. The shape of the hull and sails of a Skipjack are similar; however, the length, beam, depth, and the use of one or two masts varies greatly. The early vessels had “fore and aft” bottom planking and later vessels had “herring bone” bottom planking. It is interesting to note that most of the Skipjacks were built over a six year period (1897 to 1903). The re-use of vessel names tends to support the thought that earlier boats that sunk or were damaged were replaced in later years. The poor quality and various methods used in early record keeping could be a factor in some incorrect names, sizes, and building locations. It is also possible that some boats spoken of in folklore [are] not on the record. The Last Skipjacks Project Page 6 Vessel List - Skipjacks Yr. Blt. Name Lgth.
