There were a number of incidents that caused Egypt to be at its present state in terms of dealing with the European colonies (Mayer 82). There were several movements; one of the movements was the Urabi Suez revolt that was meant to conserve the integrity and the ownership of property by the Egyptians who believed that what they owned was meant for them. Thomas Mayer, who studies the place of the Urabi revolt in Egyptian historiography, has convincingly demonstrated that until 1922 the revolt was perceived as a mutiny ( is.yān) that led to chaos (fitna).80 Not only did the monarchy identify the revolt as a dangerous precedent for a military coup d’état, but nationalist circles were also critical of it, having witnessed the defeat at al-Tal al-Kabir. Journal of Association of Arab Universities for Tourism and Hospitality VOL 13 - NO.1-JUNE 2016 (part1) 9-40 Abu Naddara: The Forerunner of Egyptian Satirical Press Doaa Adel Mahmoud Kandil Associate Professor Faculty of Tourism & Hotels- Helwan University Abstract "Abu Naddara" was an early satirical journal that was first published in Cairo in 1878 by Yaqub Sannu. After Sannu's collision with Khedive Ismail and eventual departure to Paris, he continued to publish it there for almost three successive decades uninterruptedly, however under various changeable names. This journal was by all means the forerunner of satirical opposition press in modern Egypt. In a relatively very short time, "Abu Naddara" gained tremendous success through its humorous but rather bold and scathing criticism of Khedive Ismail's and later Khedive Tewfik's regime that helped turn public opinion against them. No wonder, it soon won popularity because it gave a voice to the downtrodden masses who found in it an outlet for their long-bottled anger. In other words, it turned to be their Vox populi that addressed their pressing problems and expressed their pains. Accordingly, it emerged as a political platform that stood in the face of corruption and social injustice, called for an all-encompassing reform, and most of all raised country-wide national awareness in the hope to develop grass-root activism. This paper investigates the role played by the journal of "Abu Naddara" in spearheading the national opposition against Khedival excesses together with the growing foreign intervention within the closing years of Ismail's reign and the opening years of Tewfik's one that ended up with the British occupation of Egypt.

  • Engagement: Coptic Christian Revival and the Performative Politics of Song
THE POLITICS OF (DIS)ENGAGEMENT: COPTIC CHRISTIAN REVIVAL AND THE PERFORMATIVE POLITICS OF SONG by CAROLYN M. RAMZY A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Carolyn Ramzy (2014) Abstract The Performative Politics of (Dis)Engagment: Coptic Christian Revival and the Performative Politics of Song Carolyn M. Ramzy A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Music, University of Toronto 2014 This dissertation explores Coptic Orthodox political (dis)engagement through song, particularly as it is expressed through the colloquial Arabic genre of taratil. Through ethnographic and archival research, I assess the genre's recurring tropes of martyrdom, sacrifice, willful withdrawal, and death as emerging markers of community legitimacy and agency in Egypt's political landscape before and following the January 25th uprising in 2011. Specifically, I explore how Copts actively perform as well as sing a pious and modern citizenry through negations of death and a heavenly afterlife. How do they navigate the convergences and contradictions of belonging to a nation as minority Christian citizens among a Muslim majority while feeling that they have little real civic agency? Through a number of case studies, I trace the discursive logics of “modernizing” religion into easily tangible practices of belonging to possess a heavenly as well as an earthly nation. I begin with Sunday Schools in the predominately Christian and middle-class neighborhood of Shubra where educators made the poetry of the late Coptic Patriarch, Pope Shenouda III, into taratil and drew on their potentials of death and withdrawal to reform a Christian moral interiority and to teach a modern and pious Coptic citizenry.

  • Agriculture in Egypt from Pharaonic to Modern Times
I 1 Agriculture in Egypt from Pharaonic to Modern Times ALAN K. BOWMAN AND EUGENE ROGAN Land, Resources, Population EVEN IN THE EARLIEST Written records, Egypt was an ancient land. It was so for Herodotus, whose Greece of the fifth century BCE was by comparison a new world, as it was for the Graeco-Roman geographer Strabo writing early in the first century of the common era. The antiquity of cultivation and prodigious fertility cyclically renewed by the annual flood of the Nile, has given rise to the modern myth of ‘eternal Egypt’, as a timeless and unchanging land inhabited by a toiling and fatalistic peasantry. It is easy even in the 1990s to stand on the banks of the Nile, to observe the rectangular plots of land, the primitive methods of irrigation, the continued reliance on animal power and basic tools and to aver that agrarian life in Egypt has changed little since Pharaonic times. Were this the case, there would be little to interest scholars of different periods in reading a collection of essays on the agricultural organisation of Egypt. This is not our view. For us -to paraphrase Braudel’s encapsulation of the longue dur& in the Mediterranean-the Nile speaks with many voices; it is a sum of individual histories. As diverse as the voices of the inhabitants who have lived out Egypt’s history, the rural history of Egypt is one of dynamism and change, united by geography and the basic factors of production: land, water, labour, tools and seed. The geography of Egypt is the fundamental unifying factor of agricultural his- tory, though obviously not in itself unchanging.

In “Cairo Trilogy”, Mahfouz presents the striking events oflate history of Egypt by weaving them with fıction. As history is one o f the most useful sources of literature the dense relationship between history and literature is beyond argument. When viewed from this aspect, a new historicist approach to literature will provide a widened perspective to both literature and history by enabling different possibilities for crucial reading. It is expected that the new historicist analysis o f “Cairo Trilogy” will enable a better insight into the literature and historical background o f Egypt. Key Words: Naguib Mahfouz, Cairo Trilogy, History, Egypt, New Historicism Özet Bu çalışmanın amacı Mısır ’lı Nobel ödüllü yazar Naguib Mahfouz ’un “Kahire Üçlemesi”adlı eserini yeni tarihselcilik metodunu kullanarak analiz etmektir.

Egypt: Background and U.S. Relations Jeremy M. Sharp Specialist in Middle Eastern Affairs September 2, 2009 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov RL33003 CRS Report for Congress Prepared for Members and Committees of Congress Egypt: Background and U.S. Relations Summary This report provides an overview of U.S.-Egyptian diplomatic relations, Egyptian politics, and U.S. foreign aid to Egypt. It also includes a political history of modern Egypt. U.S. policy toward Egypt is aimed at maintaining regional stability, improving bilateral relations, continuing military cooperation, and sustaining the March 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. Successive Administrations have long viewed Egypt as a moderating influence in the Middle East. At the same time, in recent years, there have been increasing U.S. calls for Egypt to democratize. Congressional views of U.S.-Egyptian relations vary. Many lawmakers view Egypt as a stabilizing force in the region, but some Members would like the United States to pressure Egypt to implement political reforms, improve human rights, and take a more active role in reducing Arab-Israeli tensions. The United States has provided Egypt with an annual average of over $2 billion in economic and military foreign assistance since 1979. P.L. 111-8, the FY2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act, provides $200 million in Economic Support Fund (ESF) assistance and $1.3 billion in Foreign Military Financing (FMF) assistance to Egypt. For the first time, Congress stipulated that FMF grants to Egypt may be used for “border security programs and activities in the Sinai,” a reference to anti-smuggling initiatives on the Egypt-Gaza border.

Egypt - African Studies - Oxford Bibliographies https://www.oxfordbibliographies.com/view/document/obo-9780199846... Egypt Farha Ghannam LAST REVIEWED: 06 MAY 2016 LAST MODIFIED: 30 SEPTEMBER 2013 DOI: 10.1093/OBO/9780199846733-0076 Introduction The Arab Republic of Egypt, with around 85 million inhabitants, is the second most populous African country. Located mainly in North Africa, with the Sinai Peninsula stretching into Asia, and bordering the Mediterranean (north), the Red Sea (east), Sudan (south), Libya (west), and the Gaza Strip and Israel (northeast), Egypt covers an area of approximately 387,000 square miles. Most of this area is desert, so the population tends to be concentered in the fertile land in the Delta and around the banks of the Nile. Roughly 43 percent of the population is urban, with Cairo being the largest city in the country. Most of Egypt’s population is Sunni Muslim, with 10 to 12 percent Coptic Christian. Egypt was occupied by the British from 1882 until 1922. Modern Egypt became a republic after the 1952 revolution, led by a group of young Egyptian military officers (the Free Officers), ended the rule of monarchy and the de facto British control of the country. Since then and until 2012, Egypt has been ruled by three presidents, all of whom were strongly affiliated with the army and who exercised tremendous power. After the 25 January 2011 Revolution, Egypt has moved to the direct election of the president, currently Muhammad Morsi, who is affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. General Overviews Egypt has been the center of numerous studies that explored its very long history and dynamic political, social, and cultural systems.

The achievements of the founding fathers are discussed and evaluated together with the contribution of the students who were trained by them. The outstanding achievements of intellectuals who were not educated or trained as professional historians are also appraised. The chapter tries to show the diversity of historical writing, styles and methods used by the Egyptian historians.
