We were thrilled to have Santa & Mrs. Claus take time out of their busy schedule to drop in for a visit. There was a great turn out and the meet and greet with some of the vendors showcased in our gift shop went wonderfully! We have really appreciated all the community support that we have received and we want to thank everyone who came in to join us. And we of course continue to appreciate all the visitors who stop in to see us on their travels. Visitors were able to play for door prizes, visit with the gift shop vendors, and meet Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Holiday Open House NEW YEAR, NEW THINGS IN KIMBALL There are a few items to share from the town of Kimball. The Bakery has new owners! We are happy to welcome Merrycakes into the current bakery building downtown Kimball. They will continue to offer the same wonderful donuts we know and love as well as amazing cookies, cakes and more. Make sure to get in early because they always sell out fast!! The new transit building renovations are well under way and everyone is excited to see how it will look when it is finished! It will be able to house the Kimball County Transit Service vehicles as well as office space and a conference room. -

Schematizing Plum Blossoms: Understanding Printed Images in Thirteenth-Century China By Mengge Cao B.A., McGill University, 2014 A Thesis Submitted to Department of the Art History and Communication Studies of McGill University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Department of Art History and Communication Studies McGill University Montreal, Quebec December 2016 © Mengge Cao 2016 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the significance of the printed images in the Register of Plum Blossom Portraits (Meihua xishen pu, d. 1238), the earliest extant book illustrating plum blossoms. In particular, it focuses primarily on the visual analogs in the Register, which consists of one hundred titled picture-poem sequences. Approaching the Register through the method of “period eye,” this thesis emphasizes on two factors that shaped the author’s compositional strategy: the potentiality of the print medium and the influence of the Learning of the Way (daoxue) conceptual framework. Section 1 offers factual information concerning the production and reception of the Register. Section 2 reveals the connection between the printed plum blossoms and their counterparts in the Song dynasty (960–1279) illustrated books. Section 3 investigates the conceptual foundation of the visual analogs in the Learning of the Way framework. ii RESUME Cette thèse examine l’impact historique des images imprimées dans la Chine du treizième siècle à travers l’étude du Registre des portraits de fleurs de prunier (Meihua xishen pu, d. 1238), le livre le plus ancien illustrant des fleurs de prunier. Elle concerne plus particulièrement les séquences de poèmes-images présents dans le Registre en tant qu’analog mot-image documenté par la circulation des livres ayant permis une nouvelle approche pour traiter les données visuelles. -

Song Ci is a kind of unique literary form in the history of Chinese culture, so it is difficult to translate it into English. This thesis applies House’s model of translation quality assessment to evaluate the English version of Chai Tou Feng by Lu You, which demonstrates its applicability and is helpful to future research of Tang poetry and Song Ci. Introduction Translation Quality Assessment Model, which was put forward by Juliane House in A Model of Translation Quality Assessment and Translation Quality Assessment: A Model Revisited, is considered as the first completely theoretical and practical translation quality assessment model in the field of international translation criticism. It is common to find out that a number of Chinese proses and novels were assessed by some theories, such as Transformational Generative Grammar and Equivalence Theory and so on. However, it is rare to follow House’s Translation Quality Assessment Model to assess literary works, especially Tang poetry and Song Ci, which occupy important positions in the ancient Chinese literature. Therefore, this thesis applies House’s Translation Quality Assessment Model to analyzing Chai Tou Feng by Lu You and its English version. On one hand, it helps us to apply abstract translation theories to analyzing literary works, films and Tv series; on the other hand, it contributes to spreading Chinese culture to the world, which enables the world to learn China better. -

Phenological records in historical documents have been proved to be of unique value for reconstructing past climate changes. As a literary genre, poetry reached its peak period in the Tang and Song Dynasties (618-1260 AD) in China, which could provide abundant phenological records in this period when lacking phenological observations. However, the reliability of phenological records from 15 poems as well as their processing methods remains to be comprehensively summarized and discussed. In this paper, after introducing the certainties and uncertainties of phenological information in poems, the key processing steps and methods for deriving phenological records from poems and using them in past climate change studies were discussed: -

Thai-Burmese warfare during the sixteenth century 69 THAI-BURMESE WARFARE DURING THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY AND THE GROWTH OF THE FIRST TOUNGOO EMPIRE1 Pamaree Surakiat Abstract A new historical interpretation of the pre-modern relations between Thailand and Burma is proposed here by analyzing these relations within the wider historical context of the formation of mainland Southeast Asian states. The focus is on how Thai- Burmese warfare during the sixteenth century was connected to the growth and development of the first Toungoo empire. An attempt is made to answer the questions: how and why sixteenth century Thai-Burmese warfare is distinguished from previous warfare, and which fundamental factors and conditions made possible the invasion of Ayutthaya by the first Toungoo empire. Introduction As neighbouring countries, Thailand and Burma not only share a long border but also have a profoundly interrelated history. During the first Toungoo empire in the mid-sixteenth century and during the early Konbaung empire from the mid-eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries, the two major kingdoms of mainland Southeast Asia waged wars against each other numerous times. This warfare was very important to the growth and development of both kingdoms and to other mainland Southeast Asian polities as well. 1 This article is a revision of the presentations in the 18th IAHA Conference, Academia Sinica (December 2004, Taipei) and The Golden Jubilee International Conference (January 2005, Yangon). By rethinking the aesthetic significance of “Zen painting” beyond the art and literary genres, this essay investigates how the Chan/Zen culture transformed the aesthetic attitudes and technical manifestations of picturing the landscapes, which are related to the philosophical thinking in mind. Furthermore, this essay emphasizes the problems of the “pattern” in Muromachi landscape painting to criticize the arguments made by D.T. Suzuki and his colleagues in the field of Zen and Japanese art culture. Finally, this essay studies the cultural interaction of Zen painting between China and Japan, taking the traveling landscape images of Eight Views of Xiaoxiang by Muqi and Yujian from China to Japan as a case.
