Join Us for Placido Domingo and Company in New York City April 7-10, 2016 The ageless Placido Domingo is continuing his remark- able career by performing classic roles of the baritone rep- ertoire, and the Metropolitan Opera in April is offering one of his greatest baritone roles, the title role in Verdi's drama Simon Boccanegra. The Met is pairing it with Donizetti's bel canto classic Roberto De- vereux (a story of Queen Elizabeth I of England) starring two of today's greatest divas, the soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and the mezzo soprano Elīna Garanča. To top it off, the Metropolitan Opera is performing in the same week the delightful comedy L'Elisir d'Amore (The Elixir of Love). The melody of the song is adapted from the Italian 'O Sole Mio", but the inspiration for it came from the song, "There's No Tomorrow" recorded by U.S. singer, Tony Martin, in 1949. In the late 1950s, while stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army, Presley heard Martin's recording. He told his music publisher about the song. He found songwriters, Schroeder and Gold, who wrote the lyrics in half an hour. Selling more than 20 million records, the song became number one in countries all around the world and was Presley's best selling single ever and it was written in half an hour! Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was one of the most popular American singers of the 20th century. A cultural icon, he is commonly known by the single name Elvis. He is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King". Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family at the age of 13. He began his career there in 1954, working with Sun Records owner Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African American music to a wider audience. His energized interpretations of songs, many from African American sources, and his uninhibited performance style made him enormously popular—and controversial. The Italian heritage of his father and grandfather and their love for music, drove Art into the music scene and inspired him to create, after more than 30 years of global success, a tribute album like this. This album is the story of Italian family memories and traditions. Below, Art Phillips explains the feelings and memories related to each track contained on the album. 1. Tra Veglia e Sonno (Between Wakefulness and Sleep) A piece I learnt from my father and grandfather in my very early years. They would play this every time they got together in my grandfathers kitchen with their guitar and mandolin, where live music would be an important part in our family life. Grandpa lived just around the corner from my home where our backyards connected, in fact he was also a carpenter and brick mason and built our home as well as all the other homes located around our block. Most of his children lived next door or just around the corner with connecting back yards. We would visit my grandpa and grandma each and every day, and there would not be many days in passing that my guitar wouldn’t join into the family’s musical moments.

Please let us know in which lot you will be. 7:45 am – Depart from the Springfield Museums’ State Street parking lot located directly across the street from the Springfield Main Library building. Please park in the lot and meet the bus at the curbside. We ask participants to arrive at 7:30 am. 8:15 am – Depart from the Commuter Lot, former Macy’s Dept. Store, Enfield, CT. Please park near the small kiosk to the right of the store front. We ask participants to arrive at 8 am. En route, enjoy an informative lecture on the music and artistry of this Tosca production with Michael Cascia, opera aficionado and instructor. We will make one rest stop on the way. A boxed lunch is included and will be handed out at the rest stop along with bottled water. The lunch menu will be announced soon. 12 noon – Estimated arrival at the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center for a 1 pm performance of Tosca with reserved orchestra section seating. Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca is a melodramatic piece set in Rome in June 1800, with the Kingdom of Naples's control of Rome threatened by Napoleon's invasion of Italy. It contains some of Puccini's best-known lyrical arias. Met rising star Jennifer Rowley has the title role of the volatile diva at the heart of this operatic thriller.

The first was finding the magical setting of West Horsley Place. Other marvels were getting planning permission to build a fabulous new opera house in the Surrey Hills, the generosity of contributors (listed later) and the pace at which Martin Smith, our builder, has been making it take shape. How convenient that all this is happening a mile from a railway station – and around the corner from the M25. Of course, the greatest miracle of all has been the exceptional philanthropy of Bamber and Christina Gascoigne. By placing their inheritance into a charitable trust, this bewitching house and grounds can now be enjoyed forever by many people from all walks of life. Such miracles are cause for celebration and I do hope you will join us. Of course, the new can be frightening so it will be blended with familiar old friends: the seats – originally from the Royal Opera House – have come with us, as have the Indian pavilions, the chandeliers and the much-loved train set. At the heart of the experience is music. On June 8, Grange Park Opera will open in its new home with Tosca, and to sing for us we have captured the tenor superstar, Joseph Calleja. Joseph is one of a firmament that will be performing this season: Natalya Romaniw is in the title role of Janacek’s Jenufa (written at the same time as Tosca and with a similarly lavish orchestral palette), while for Wagner’s epic Die Walküre, American tenor Bryan Register will sing Siegmund opposite Rachel Nichols whose performances throughout Europe have been the talk of the EU.
