HIGHER GROUND The Serenity Prayer. .it's origin is traced. Grapevine, Jan. 1950 AT long last the mystery of the Serenity Prayer has been solved! We have learned who wrote it, when it was written and how it came to the attention of the early members of AA. We have learned, too, how it was originally written, a bit of information which should lay to rest all arguments as to which is the correct quotation. The timeless little prayer has been credited to almost every theologian, philosopher and saint known to man. The most popular opinion on its authorship favors St. Francis of Assisi. It was actually written by Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr, of the Union Theological Seminary, New York City, in about 1932 as the ending to a longer prayer. In 1934 the doctor's friend and neighbor, Dr. Howard Robbins asked permission to use that part of the longer prayer in a compilation he was making at the time. It was published in that year in Dr. Robbins' book of prayers. Dr. Niebuhr says, "Of course, it may have been spooking around for years, even centuries, but I don't think so. I honestly do believe that I wrote it myself." It came to the attention of an early member of AA in 1939. He read it in an obituary appearing in the New York Times. Roland Barthes1 iii ABSTRACT Popular narratives often extend textual content across multiple media platforms, creating transmedia stories. Recent scholarship has stressed the permeability of "the text," suggesting that the framework of a text, made up of paratexts including trailers and DVD extras, must be included in textual analysis. Here, I propose that this notion may be productively coupled with a theory of seriality––we may frame this phenomenon in the filmic terms of a narrative being comprised of transmedia sequels and/or prequels, or in the televisual language of episodes in a series. The Serenity Prayer by LaBreeska Hemphill “God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Most of us have come across this powerful little prayer at one time or another. It has been displayed on plaques in restaurants, homes, and places of business. It can also be found in friendship cards, etc. However, where this prayer has been most effective is with Alcoholics Anonymous. They adopted it in 1941. Wherever we find this priceless little gem of wisdom it will have “anonymous” written at the bottom. Having said that let me tell you about a fascinating lady evangelist that I once knew. Imon Ursery was one of the most gifted and interesting women that I have had the privilege to be acquainted with. Her ministry spanned several decades, reaching far into the sixties. She was dynamite in a small package. Sister Ursery, as everyone called her, was a petite lady minister and poet with an abundance of strikingly beautiful, auburn hair. She spoke with a soft voice, as she preached up and down the aisles. You had to lean-in in order to hear her but her sermons were delivered with great energy and passion. When she broached a subject it was evident that she had done her homework. She knew what she was talking about and was going to tell you something that you didn’t know. One of her unforgettable sermons was on dogs. She loved dogs and had studied many mixes and breeds, and found them to have similar characteristics to human beings with recognizable personality traits.

Logistically, this was the first episode with multiple writers. Although Matt and others had input on the final version of “The Big Stick,” the initial draft was almost exclusively mine. In contrast, Davey started this episode, then had to hand off writing duties to Serge midway through. Both did an excellent job with the process, and as the project progressed, these kind of hand-offs would become fairly common, but this early in, there was a steep learning curve. We were very much thrown into the deep end of the pool. With respect to the content of the episode, we knew very early on that we wanted to be very faithful to the continuity of the television series, but also wanted to demonstrate that we weren’t afraid to act definitively as we moved forward. We collectively discussed the story potential for each of the existing characters and decided that while Niska is a great villain, he’s already killed Mal once, so where can he really go after that? I’m sure Joss would have come up with an amazing twist, but all we could really see was escalation and repetition of the beats of “War Stories.” The idea that Niska was ultimately a story dead end led us to “Hero Complex”, or at least to part of the idea that would become “Hero Complex.” We knew that Niska was going to die, but the necessary follow-up question was who would kill him? Mal is the obvious answer, but almost too obvious.

The Shared and Communal Features of Firefly/Serenity Fanfiction Hanna-Riikka Roine Abstract: The article challenges the models of resistance that are generally used as the primary way to understand the work of fandom. Instead, the article ponders the way in which the textual conventions and structures of fanfiction writing are connected with promoting and sustaining communality and maintains that fanfiction studies ought to put less emphasis on people-centred metaphors such as poachers and nomads. Significantly, as fannish activities such as fanfiction writing centre on texts, it is necessary that we analyse the processes of both producing and disseminating stories. The case study in the article is the fandom of Firefly, an American space western drama television series created by writer and director Joss Whedon. In addition to the devoted fan base, the case of Firefly is especially interesting due to the fact that the building of its fictional world and characters had barely got started when the show was cancelled, and the threads that had to be left hanging have actively been picked up by the fandom. Through the emphasis on the actual texts of fanfiction, the article also aims at casting light on why the genres of fantasy and science fiction seem to offer a more fertile ground for fanfiction writers than some other source texts.
