When he takes on two passengers, a young doctor and his mysterious, telepathic sister, he gets much more than he bargained for…This official companion is just what the show’s fervent fans, the ‘Browncoats’, have been waiting for, with unseen photos, scripts, behind the scenes secrets, and exclusive input from the cast and crew, including of course creator Joss Whedon.Contains the second part of an extended interview with Joss Whedon, as well as exclusive new interviews with the cast, executive producer Tim Minear and many other writers and crewmembers; the full, uncut shooting scripts for ‘Jaynestown’, ‘Out of Gas’, ‘Ariel’, ‘War Stories’ ‘Trash’, ‘The Message’, ‘Heart of Gold’ and ‘Objects in Space’, annotated with memories from the cast and crew; extended behind-the-scenes interviews with the crew behind Firefly, including sections on the production design and visual effects, illustrated with unseen imagery; in addition a section on the Firefly fans and of course Vera... The Firefly: The Official Companion: Volume Two was a wonderful purchase for me. It is 208 pages of detailed information on heavy glossy color pages. It is 32 more pages than Volume One. The photos, sketches and diagrams in the book are wonderful. It is a full size paperback book about 8 1/2 x 11. It is the same size as Volume One. The companion book is a very nice quality. And, it is heavy. It contains the scripts of several episodes which include Jaynestown, Out of Gas, Ariel, War Stories, Trash, The Message, Heart of Gold, and Objects in Space. There are a lot of commentary by the cast and crew. There are profiles of the actors and characters which detail a lot of information. There are a lot of drawings and pictures of props and costumes. There are also a lot of scene info and photos. There is information on the creation of the theme song for the show.Joss Whedon did a great job with the show. And, so did his team. Fox screwed up, and they should have let Whedon do what he knew how to do and to allow the show to stay on a decent night than to mess with things and mess with the episode order. This is definitely a must book for the Firefly fan and any Browncoat for sure.I recommend this book because it is so fully detail with information and color photos, and you get a lot of behind the scenes knowledge about the show and what the actors, writers and directors thought. This companion book tells so much that you are not able to find and gather in one place and be able to have available in front of you in your hands. Sprayed with a million tears He gave it to our keeping Wishing God had spared you If only for a few more years. To cherish undefiled; You left a special memory And just as it was opening And a sorrow too great to hold, To the glory of the day, To us who loved and lost you Down came the Heavenly Father Your memory will never grow old. Thanks for the years we had, And took our bud away. Thanks for the memories we shared. We only prayed that when you left us That you knew how much we cared. 1 2 AFTERGLOW A Heart of Gold I’d like the memory of me A heart of gold stopped beating to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow Working hands at rest of smiles when life is done. But that trouble is strong kin to the freedom that keeps us flying. To weather the good along with the bad, a few critical ingredients should always be rightly considered and well met: a sturdy boat, an honest crew, a reliable firearm and a stiff drink. This little ebook deals with the latter. Whether it’s another depressing Unification Day, an upscale shindig or a just an evening with the crew, continue reading for the best mixed drinks the ‘verse has to offer. For starters, check out a few recipes for mudder’s milk. • Firefly Season 2” Is the Only Work of Fan Fiction I’Ve Ever Written, and I Wouldn’T Be Surprised If It’S the Only One I Ever Write
Firefly 201 + script bible 30th January 2016 revision Mike Le Page Author’s notes: The act of creating art is something I hold sacred, and I have no interest in shitting on someone else’s work, especially someone I respect as much as Joss Whedon. The following spec script for “Firefly season 2” is the only work of fan fiction I’ve ever written, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the only one I ever write. I only wrote it because I had a waking dream that provided a neat way to tie up several loose ends from the series/movie as well as a way to bring Wash back that performs a critical plot function and isn’t just fan-service. This was written with longer-format episodes in mind. The crazy idea I had was that Firefly would be the ideal property with which to trial a kind of in-cinema, once-a-month mini-movie format which would promote the community of fans gathering at cinemas and allow studios to recoup the costs of shooting more expensive “TV” shows – much the same way that iMAX cinemas sold out for showings of Game of Thrones episodes. The idea was a second season of 8x 80-90 minute minimovies of Firefly, shot in a LOTR style shoot and released once a month over a single calendar year. This idea is in no way necessary for this script to work, but it perhaps goes some way to explain the length of this script. What you’ll notice is that I’ve erred on the side of changing things considerably from the first season/movie, separating the crew and mothballing Serenity for reasons to be explained: I don’t think it’s plausible that we could come back to the crew 10+ years later and have it be exactly the same.

  • Kaylee Frye, an Incomplete Role Model
Casey Canfield Disciplinary Deliverable 12/16/09 Kaylee Frye, an Incomplete Role Model It’s easy to turn on the TV and find shows about how fun and exciting it is to be a doctor, lawyer, or FBI agent – but what about being an engineer? Where’s the glamour and excitement in that? You could try some of the reality shows on the Discovery and Science channels and watch Doing DaVinci, Building it Bigger, or Heavy Metal Task Force. Or maybe you watch American Chopper or Restorer Guy on TLC. The problem is that all of these shows are for and about men and describe men’s relationship with creating and caring for technology. As a female engineer, I find my invisibility in the media problematic. But that is why I got so excited about Joss Whedon’s Firefly, which depicted a woman named Kaylee Frye as the ship’s engineer. In the real world, some women have difficulty balancing their desires to be feminine and their desire to be taken seriously as an engineer. Since engineers are coded as masculine, feminine-presenting women are automatically taken less seriously as engineers. While this tension was reflected in Kaylee’s character, there were missing elements in her back story that made her feel less real. Where and how did she learn so much about engines? What was her childhood like? Was becoming an engineer her life’s ambition? Granted, she’s a relatively minor character and the series ended incomplete, but the issues that were left unresolved reflect the issues that women in engineering engage with every day.

  • The Serenity Prayer. . .It's Origin Is Traced
HIGHER GROUND The Serenity Prayer. .it's origin is traced. Grapevine, Jan. 1950 AT long last the mystery of the Serenity Prayer has been solved! We have learned who wrote it, when it was written and how it came to the attention of the early members of AA. We have learned, too, how it was originally written, a bit of information which should lay to rest all arguments as to which is the correct quotation. The timeless little prayer has been credited to almost every theologian, philosopher and saint known to man. The most popular opinion on its authorship favors St. Francis of Assisi. It was actually written by Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr, of the Union Theological Seminary, New York City, in about 1932 as the ending to a longer prayer. In 1934 the doctor's friend and neighbor, Dr. Howard Robbins asked permission to use that part of the longer prayer in a compilation he was making at the time. It was published in that year in Dr. Robbins' book of prayers. Dr. Niebuhr says, "Of course, it may have been spooking around for years, even centuries, but I don't think so. I honestly do believe that I wrote it myself." It came to the attention of an early member of AA in 1939. He read it in an obituary appearing in the New York Times. He liked it so much he brought it in to the little office on Vesey St. for Bill W. to read. When Bill and the staff read the little prayer, they felt that it particularly suited the needs of AA.

  • The Expanded 'Verse
The Expanded 'Verse: Serialized Transmediality in Firefly/Serenity ............ by Frederick Blichert, BA (Hons.) A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Film Studies Carleton University OTTAWA, Ontario Submitted August 2014 © 2014, Frederick Blichert ii We know now that a text is not a line of words releasing a single "theological" meaning (the "message" of the Author- God) but a multi-dimensional space in which a variety of writings, none of them original, blend and clash. Roland Barthes1 iii ABSTRACT Popular narratives often extend textual content across multiple media platforms, creating transmedia stories. Recent scholarship has stressed the permeability of "the text," suggesting that the framework of a text, made up of paratexts including trailers and DVD extras, must be included in textual analysis. Here, I propose that this notion may be productively coupled with a theory of seriality––we may frame this phenomenon in the filmic terms of a narrative being comprised of transmedia sequels and/or prequels, or in the televisual language of episodes in a series. Through a textual analysis of the multifaceted transmedia narrative Firefly (2002-2003), I argue for a theoretical framework that further destabilizes the traditional text by considering such paratextual works as comic books, web videos, and the feature film Serenity (Joss Whedon, 2005) as narrative continuations within a single metatext that eschews the centrality of any one text over the others in favour of seriality. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to thank Erika Balsom, Malini Guha, André Loiselle, and Charles O'Brien for their notes on various versions, drafts, and proposals of this material, along with Sylvie Jasen and Murray Leeder, who encouraged me to workshop some of these ideas as guest lecturer in their undergraduate courses.

  • The Use of the Works of Joss Whedon
Compendium2 4.1 (2011): 35-42 Using Joss Whedon in the Composition Classroom ERIN WAGGONER “How did your brain even learn human speech? I’m just so curious.” -Wash, “Objects in Space” Introduction In her conclusion to Faith and Choice in the Works of Joss Whedon, K. Dale Koontz asks the question, “will college come to Buffy?” (187). Several schools offer classes on Buffy the Vampire Slayer as well as Joss Whedon’s works as a whole—one of my own independent study classes included. When I first started teaching English composition, I wasn’t entirely sure how to incorporate Buffy, or any television shows for that matter, into the classroom. I knew, however, that I wanted to use the shows as supplemental in-course “readings.” After some trial and error, I came up with a method for utilizing television shows as texts. When I assigned students texts and essays to read, most seemed uninterested, and that showed in their writing assignments. However, when I used television or other media-related tools, the students’ writing demonstrated increased interest through better responses—because the rhetorical imagery appealed more to students than constant reading. This prompted me to find a way to utilize television as my main text for teaching. With my love of Buffy and all things Whedon, it was only natural that once I figured out how to use television, I would focus my lessons on episodes from Whedon’s shows. What surprised me was the overall positive response my teaching methods received, both from students and colleagues. Using Whedon’s work as a supplemental text in the composition classroom has proven a successful teaching tool.
