Press Release Wednesday 25 March 2015 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TELEVISION CRAFT AWARDS: NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED FIVE NOMINATIONS FOR PENNY DREADFUL FOUR NOMINATIONS FOR THE HONOURABLE WOMAN AND LIFE & DEATH ROW STRICTLY COME DANCING, PEAKY BLINDERS AND DA VINCI’S DEMONS EACH RECEIVE THREE NOMINATIONS London, 25 March 2015: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has today announced the nominations for its annual British Academy Television Craft Awards, which honour the very best behind-the-scenes talent working in television. This year’s ceremony will be held at The Brewery, London on Sunday 26 April. A diverse range of programmes compete in each category for the coveted BAFTA masks. Leading the way with five nominations is Sky Atlantic’s psychological thriller Penny Dreadful, featuring Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green. Following closely with four nominations are BBC Two drama The Honourable Woman, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and BBC Three documentary Life & Death Row. A number of programmes have three nominations each: fantasy drama Da Vinci’s Demons; historical crime drama Peaky Blinders; and Saturday-night favourite Strictly Come Dancing. Victoria Wood’s musical, That Day We Sang, receives two nominations in the Sound: Fiction and Production Design categories. The accompanying behind-the-scenes documentary, That Musical We Made, also receives a nomination in the Sound: Factual category. Also with two nominations apiece are 24 hours in Police Custody, Children on the Front Line (Dispatches), Cilla, Grayson Perry: Who Are You?, Happy Valley, Marvellous, The Missing, Murdered by My Boyfriend and Sherlock. There were also two nominations for Ripper Street, marking the first BAFTA nominations for a programme shown exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Instant Video. -

Film Review: 'The Witch'
Film Review: ‘The Witch’ Writer-director Robert Eggers makes an impressive feature debut with this gripping historical horror- thriller. Justin Chang A fiercely committed ensemble and an exquisite sense of historical detail conspire to cast a highly atmospheric spell in “The Witch,” a strikingly achieved tale of a mid-17th-century New England family’s steady descent into religious hysteria and madness. Laying an imaginative foundation for the 1692 Salem witchcraft trials that would follow decades later, writer-director Robert Eggers’ impressive debut feature walks a tricky line between disquieting ambiguity and full-bore supernatural horror, but leaves no doubt about the dangerously oppressive hold that Christianity exerted on some dark corners of the Puritan psyche. With its formal, stylized diction and austere approach to genre, this accomplished feat of low-budget period filmmaking will have to work considerable marketing magic to translate appreciative reviews into specialty box-office success, but clearly marks Eggers as a storyteller of unusual rigor and ambition. A New England-born, Brooklyn-based talent who started out in the theater, Eggers has several film credits as a production/costume designer and art director, as evidenced here by his subtle yet meticulous visuals and bone- deep sense of place. The verisimilitude is striking: Produced in the abandoned lumber town of Kiosk in a heavily wooded region of Northern Ontario, and lensed by d.p. Jarin Blaschke in beautifully muted, mist- wreathed shades of gray, “The Witch” (which bears the subtitle “A New- England Folktale”) confines most of its fleet 92-minute running time to a small farm at the edge of a dark forest circa 1630 — a setting whose atmosphere of mystery and menace is no less unsettling for being possibly imagined. -

Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans. -

Ellie White Writer/ Performer Ellie White is one of the UK’s most exciting young character comedians and comedy actors. She played the lead role of Cathy, alongside co-leads Siobhan Finneran, Lauren Socha and Rebecca Front, in Holly Walsh’s BBC New On Two pilot THE OTHER ONE, which led to a series commission. John Simm ~ 47 Screen Credits and more The eldest of three children, actor and musician John Ronald Simm was born on 10 July 1970 in Leeds, West Yorkshire and grew up in Nelson, Lancashire. He attended Edge End High School, Nelson followed by Blackpool Drama College at 16 and The Drama Centre, London at 19. He lives in North London with his wife, actress Kate Magowan and their children Ryan, born on 13 August 2001 and Molly, born on 9 February 2007. Simm won the Best Actor award at the Valencia Film Festival for his film debut in Boston Kickout (1995) and has been twice BAFTA nominated (to date) for Life On Mars (2006) and Exile (2011). He supports Man U, is "a Beatles nut" and owns seven guitars. John Simm quotes I think I can be closed in. I can close this outer shell, cut myself off and be quite cold. Film Review: the Witch
Film Review: The Witch Introducing itself as “A New England Folk Tale,” the film immediately thrusts us into a courthouse where a family is being expelled from their colony essentially for not practicing the right version of Christianity. On their own in the wilderness, the family establishes their own small farm but once their newborn son goes missing while in the care of their eldest daughter, a series of bad things start to happen and supernatural forces seem to be at hand. The Witch is an extraordinary film that not only gives the audience horror in the literal and traditional sense, but also in the metaphoric as most of the story’s characters are haunted by grief, guilt and deception. It is worth noting that the thrills and scares of The Witch are subtle at times and deliberately paced, so if you don’t go in expecting a thrill-a-minute scare fest, I believe that you as the viewer will be greatly rewarded by this terrific film. Writer director Robert Eggers does a wonderful job of establishing a mood and world for the story while providing plenty of creepy atmosphere and some of the most subtly unsettling images to grace a screen in quite some time. Meanwhile the entire cast of The Witch turns in some of the most gut wrenching performances given to a genre film in ages, and every member of the main cast is certainly going to be recognized for their work. The Witch received a wide release last week and if it is still running at a theater near you I highly recommend seeing it before it is gone, and if it already left your local theater then seek it out on VOD.
