Press Release Wednesday 25 March 2015 for IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Release Wednesday 25 March 2015 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TELEVISION CRAFT AWARDS: NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED FIVE NOMINATIONS FOR PENNY DREADFUL FOUR NOMINATIONS FOR THE HONOURABLE WOMAN AND LIFE & DEATH ROW STRICTLY COME DANCING, PEAKY BLINDERS AND DA VINCI’S DEMONS EACH RECEIVE THREE NOMINATIONS London, 25 March 2015: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has today announced the nominations for its annual British Academy Television Craft Awards, which honour the very best behind-the-scenes talent working in television. This year’s ceremony will be held at The Brewery, London on Sunday 26 April. A diverse range of programmes compete in each category for the coveted BAFTA masks. Leading the way with five nominations is Sky Atlantic’s psychological thriller Penny Dreadful, featuring Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green. Following closely with four nominations are BBC Two drama The Honourable Woman, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and BBC Three documentary Life & Death Row. A number of programmes have three nominations each: fantasy drama Da Vinci’s Demons; historical crime drama Peaky Blinders; and Saturday-night favourite Strictly Come Dancing. Victoria Wood’s musical, That Day We Sang, receives two nominations in the Sound: Fiction and Production Design categories. The accompanying behind-the-scenes documentary, That Musical We Made, also receives a nomination in the Sound: Factual category. Also with two nominations apiece are 24 hours in Police Custody, Children on the Front Line (Dispatches), Cilla, Grayson Perry: Who Are You?, Happy Valley, Marvellous, The Missing, Murdered by My Boyfriend and Sherlock. There were also two nominations for Ripper Street, marking the first BAFTA nominations for a programme shown exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Instant Video. Dominated by writer-performers, the Writer: Comedy category sees James Corden and Mathew Baynton receive a second successive nomination for The Wrong Mans and Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton nominated for dark comedy Inside No.9. Arthur Matthews and Matt Berry pick up a nomination for Toast of London while Mackenzie Crook receives his first BAFTA nomination for Detectorists, the comedy series about two metal-detecting enthusiasts. The Digital Creativity category celebrates excellence and innovation in interactive projects relating to television broadcasts. This year’s nominees are: Live from Space: Online, which enhanced Channel 4’s Live from Space season; mobile application Reverse the Odds: Stand Up To Cancer, an educational game that also encouraged audiences to donate; The Singer Takes it All, the singing gameshow where viewers 1 Press Release (cont.) judge performances live via a mobile app; and War of the Words VR, an immersive virtual reality experience of poetry for mobile phones to accompany the BBC Two documentary. Other programmes with nominations are: 2014 FA Cup Final, Atlantis, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, The Apprentice, The Choir: New Military Wives, David Attenborough’s Conquest of the Skies 3D, Doctor Who, D:Day the Heroes Return, Downton Abbey, The Fall, Hidden Kingdoms: Under Open Skies, The Last Chance School, Life Story: First Steps, Line of Duty, The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, Messiah at the Foundling Hospital, Mrs Brown’s Boys, The Musketeers, The Paedophile Hunter, Photographing Africa, Prey, Tommy Cooper: Not Like That, Like This, Tsunami: Survivors’ Stories, Utopia, The Voice, Winter Olympics 2014 and The X Factor. Stephen Mangan returns to host the event and said: ‘I’m absolutely delighted to be back for the fourth time as host of the British Academy Television Craft Awards, representing the very best in television. A BAFTA is one of the most prestigious awards to receive in the world and it’s always a great night.” BAFTA’s Chief Executive Amanda Berry OBE said: “Today’s nominations are tangible proof that the UK is home to some of the most exciting and talented Television Craft practitioners. Briegel is being recognised for her extensive work across a diverse range of productions, including Absolutely Fabulous, Only Fools and Horses, Newsnight, the Wimbledon Championships and the Olympic Games. It is the first time the Special Award has been presented to a vision mixer. From boundary-pushing writers and performers who say the unsayable, to silent slapstick heroes of the past and disreputable and anarchic voices of the present, this season will celebrate comic genius with an array of talent taking part throughout the season. Guests will include Jane Fonda, John Landis, Tracey Ullman, Lenny Henry and Jennifer Saunders, while silent star Mabel Normand is given her long-overdue moment in the spotlight. Following on from previous landmark BFI blockbusters including Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder, The Genius of Hitchcock and Black Star, Comedy Genius will be a provocative and timely moment to pause and contemplate comedy in contemporary Britain. As we collectively face fundamental questions of identity, social responsibility and nationhood in a post-Brexit and post-#MeToo world, are there now some lines that simply should not be crossed or are the lines more blurred than ever? Is it possible to enjoy un-PC comedy of the past with a clear conscience? And how are a new generation of ‘woke’ comedians changing up the game? As arguably the most subjective form of entertainment, comedy has the power to provoke exciting and varied debate – and make us laugh with fart jokes.
