HEAVEN BOUND, EARTHLY GOOD: AN HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF RACE RELATIONS IN THE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY IN PARTIAL FULFiLLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS BY JONATHAN GRANT DEPARTMENT OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES STUDIES ATLANTA, GEORGIA MAY 2010 ABSTRACT AFRICAN-AJ~4zEpJcM~ STUDIES GRANT, JONATHAN BA. OAKWOOD UNIVERITY, 2007 HEAVEN BOUND, EARTHLY GOOD: AN HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF RACE RELATIONS IN THE SEVENTH-DAy ADVENTIST CHURCH Advisor: Dr. Josephine Bradley Thesis dated May 2010 The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a denomination that has contributed much to the development of American society. Although the Church is a religious and social institution, its views on race in America have changed over the years, from its abolitionist approach during the mid 19th century to its stance of non-involvement during the Civil Rights Movement. By studying the race relations in the Adventist Church, this thesis reveals the factors that may have caused its position of non-intervention during the Civil Rights Movement. The thesis analyzes the development of black/white race relations in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and how it has led to the Church’s stance regarding race during the Civil Rights Movement. The functionalist theory is utilized to elucidate the Church’s racial approach from a sociological perspective. This thesis allows for future research of other religious organizations and how those institutions have helped advance or delay the quest for social freedom amongst African Americans. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author of this document acknowledges, first and foremost, his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for allowing this manuscript to become a success. -

Methodists at the time, began observing the seventh- day Sabbath in honor of a pledge Mattie Brooks had made to God while in a hospital bed suffering from a near-fatal illness. The family observed the Sabbath and read The Great Controversy for years without knowing of the existence of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Introduction The Seventh-day Adventist denomination is one of the most successful exports from the United States of America with a global membership. Nineteenth century America spawned a number of religious organisations that have as their base a similar ideology. “You must become one of us to be saved”. In addition to the Seventh-day Adventist denomination, they include among their number the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, the Churches of God and Fellowships of God as well as many other Pentecostal style groups. -
Creation Debate in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church Gerhard Pfandl
Creation Debate in the Seventh-day Adventist Church Gerhard Pfandl At the Annual Council in 2001 the General Conference Executive Committee organized a series of conferences on faith and science during the years 2002-2004. The first conference in 2002 was an international conference in Ogden, Utah. More than 80 scientists, theologians and church administrators from different parts of the world began discussing the interrelationship between faith and science. Topics ranged from the hominid fossil record to Ellen White’s view of science. The conference revealed the seriousness and breadth of differences concerning questions of origin that are present in the SDA community today. During 2003 and the first half of 2004 seven divisions held similar faith and science conferences in their territories. The formal discussions culminated in August 2004 with the second international conference on the subject in Denver, Colorado. At this conference papers were read summarizing the findings of the discussions during the previous two years. The new element in this conference was a discussion on the ethics of dissent dealing with the ethical responsibility of those who differ in significant ways from the biblical position of the church on the topic of creation. The discussion was open, candid, and highly professional. It was obvious that a small number of individuals – scientists and theologians – did not support or felt uncomfortable with the biblical doctrine of creation in six literal, consecutive days as clearly revealed in Genesis 1.1 There was no attempt on the part of church leaders to modify or change our fundamental belief on creation. This was clearly stated by Elder Jan Paulsen before the discussions were initiated.
