Ècole Secondaire Recognition Awards 2019-2020

What a year it has been!

We would like to recognize that Esquimalt High School is on the traditional territories of the Esquimalt and people, where we live, work, and our amazing students do amazing work.

Usually we recognize the achievements of our students during an evening celebration in June. This year we are unable to celebrate together, but we still wish to recognize the amazing work our students have done throughout the year.

This publication proudly recognizes the achievements of hundreds of Esquimalt students. They are our scholars, our athletes, our musicians and our leaders. It's the effort, involvement and commitment of these young people that provide Esquimalt with its character, diversity and sense of community. They are a dynamic group of individuals and each has made a lasting contribution. As a staff, we feel very fortunate to have shared this school year and all its challenge with them and we are so proud to celebrate their success.

Congratulations to Esquimalt Students of 2019-2020

Lukas is a Songhees/Lekwungen member who exemplifies what a great leader is within our school, the community and on the soccer field. He is a young man who leads by example and is not afraid to speak up for what he believes is right. Lukas has the ability to walk in both worlds with integrity and respect. He effectively balances both school and cultural work while being a respectful and hardworking young man. Lukas was chosen by School District 61 to be a student representative on the AD HOC Committee to support SD61 with development of the mandate to improve the learning outcomes of First Nation students. He was a strong voice at the table and ensured the committee that he spoke on behalf of all First Nations students. Lukas has been a peer-tutor for Room 330’s Homework Club for the past three years. His dedication to learning and supporting other students did not stop there. Lukas was also a peer tutor at Esquimalt High and Teacher’s Assistant in his pre-calculus classes. Lukas demonstrated his strengths and weaknesses with his peers in a respectful and patient manner. When he didn’t understand a problem, he was never afraid to ask for help. For these reasons Lukas Dick is being awarded the Butch Dick Award.

ABORIGINAL WRITING AWARD P R E S E N T E D T O L A T O Y A J A M E S T H O M P S O N

Latoya has consistently shown that she connects strongly to story. She displays empathy and sensitivity when hearing and reading biography, poetry, and narrative. It is obvious that story often captures her imagination and expands her boundaries. Latoya capably crafts stories of her own imagining, building tension and exploring emotional responses. In Social Studies she chose to connect to historical fact by writing a narrative that told the tale of a WW1 soldier and his challenges. Overall Latoya has been a diligent and hard-working student that is earnest in her desire to grow, succeed and learn. We are extremely proud to honor Latoya with this year’s Aboriginal Writing Award. We honor and hold Kasia up for showing great strength and steadfast resilience to achieve academically despite facing many challenges this school year. Not least of these challenges was being disconnected from her extended family and home nation of the Samson Cree. Kasia's quiet nature belies her ability to speak and write with depth and maturity. She is a strong voice in the class and among her peers. She isn’t afraid to ask for help and is always willing to improve her work. For these reasons, we are proud to award Kasia with one

of the Thrifty’s Aboriginal Achievement Award. Felicia (Alice) Dick is a Songhees/Lekwungen student who has overcome many obstacles these past few years and still rose above to meet all her academic requirements. In her transition year to high school, Felicia was away on medical leave for almost two months but was still able to catch up and thrive as a new student here at Esquimalt High School. It took sheer will and determination to not only catch up after returning to school, but to also achieve great grades in her classes. Felicia supports other students and is kind and respectful. She attends local First Nations community functions and celebrations here in Victoria. We honor both these students for their shared resilience, committed efforts, and drive to represent themselves and their families in a good way. The Marvin Dodds Award recognizes students who toil quietly behind the scenes. These students often help us maintain momentum, carrying the torch, quietly persisting, long after everyone else has forgotten what it was we had planned to achieve. These students have given their time freely and asked little in return. There are two recipients this year: Kestral Guyon and Megan Van Campen.

DAVE ALLEN AWARD P R E S E N T E D T O S H E Y D A S H A M S A N D O L I V I A W O O D S

The Dave Allen Award is given to a student who has proven to be indispensable during the course of the year. Always there when required, putting other people’s needs before their own, these students are never too tired or too busy to lend a hand. This year the award goes to: Sheyda Shams and Olivia Woods. Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Department Awards SCIENCE AWARD P R E S E N T E D T O L U C A S H E N R Y

A Top Science Student has been a student of all core academic science and mathematics courses, has maintained a high academic standing, and has demonstrated mathematical and scientific curiosity, creativity and ability

The 2020 recipient is Lucas Henry.

Lucas’ exceptional creativity and ability has been noted by all his science and mathematics teachers. He masters difficult material quickly and independently and possesses natural teaching aptitude. Lucas thinks deeply about interesting problems in mathematics and physics, but his real passion is application and problem solving (and, of course, music). From his early days in calculus (starting in grade 9!) to teaching Arduino programming to student groups, Lucas has demonstrated commitment to community and next level ability. He was Esquimalt’s top student in Chemistry 12, Physics 12 and Calculus 12.

Way to go, Lucas!

PS – The top mathematics student would normally be honoured by celebration of their Euclid contest result. Since all contests were cancelled this year, the Math Department wishes to acknowledge Lucas as the clear standout in Mathematics, too. English Language Arts is about so much more than reading and writing. Students learn how to defend their points of view, to substantiate their opinions, to express themselves and find their unique voice. Our ELA Awards winners are shining examples of how language can make on stand out, make one an advocate and a critic, and how a voice can be used to raise up those around it.

Our top Junior ELA Students share this award for the exemplary work, both in class and on their own time, as they both worked not only to learn the language but to find themselves within it. Congratulations to Lucia Nieto and Ali Azizi.

Our top Senior ELA Student has been a voice to be reckoned with since she came to ESQ, and has led the charge with her poetry, her performance, and her often hilariously verbose emails. She will be greatly missed but we all know she is moving on to great things as she continues her journey. Congratulations to Isolde Welby. This year, Esquimalt High School’s 17 mathletes in Grades 9 through 11* really gave it their all the National Math Contest out of Waterloo University. These contests are uniquely challenging because our students need to learn concepts not traditionally taught in their math class and they only have 60 minutes to write. Time management is as much of an obstacle as the math itself! The following students scored high enough to be placed in the Top 25% of contest writers in the country! For Grade 9 Eli Breker ...Top Grade 9 Luca Costi Henry Flint For Grade 10 Omar Khurram ...Top Grade 10 Jessica Ngo For Grade 11 Johnathan Nakata ...Top Grade 11 All students will have a certificate awaiting them in September and for the top students in each grade, a medal will also be awarded! This year, Esquimalt High also competed in the Team Category. The Top 3 scores from each grade were averaged. A heartfelt congratulations to this year’s Grade 9 participants, Eli, Gemma and Henry!!! Your results put Esquimalt at #3 in the region--- out of 8 competing schools, half of which are private schools. Well done, Grade 9s!!! Another HUGE shoutout must be made to Grade 9 student Eli Breker. His score of an outstanding 138/150 was the top score in the Greater Victoria region, shared with only 5 other students. This put Eli in the 80th (shared) spot in the entire country! Commendations must also be shared with his teammates, Luca and Henry for making it into Greater Victoria’s Top 18--- shared with 19 other students! Lastly, congratulations to Grade 11 student Johnathan Nakata for coming in Greater Victoria’s Top 18--- shared with 11 other students! It is never too early to start practicing for 2021! Please check out the Waterloo Math Contests online and start working together on strategy. #TogetherWeAreStronger

I am proud to give this award to Angelina Sam, and look forward to seeing her in dance next year as she heads towards graduation.

Top Dancer: this year's top Dancer is a young woman who has pushed herself over the course of her high school career to improve in all aspects of performance, taking on leadership roles both in and out of class, learning the ins and outs of choreography, and challenging herself to learn new and complex maneuvers. Her musical abilities have been featured many times including playing at the Remembrance Day assemblies. Amelia’s presence will be missed in our program, but we are excited for what her future holds.

Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Department Awards VISUAL ARTS AWARD P R E S E N T E D T O A L Y S H A M O S T A D The Visual Arts Award goes the the senior student who exemplifies the artist's habits of mind as well as contributes to the visual arts culture of Esquimalt High School. A gifted artist in painting, drawing, graphic media and textiles, this grade 12 student consistently modelled her artistic process in her years in Art from grades 9 through 12. As teacher assistant, she also worked hard to maintain supplies in the studio space and took an active interest in learning the budgeting aspects of maintaining the art program. One of her biggest contributions was in her role as leader of the Art Club where she organized student artists to produce the first ever bi-annual art show fundraiser: The Visual Arts Gala and Craft Fair. She pioneered this event in an effort to improve the quality of supplies available for all art students. The Art Gala was her inspiration and she devoted many hours of personal time in service to the Esquimalt High School art community, while maintaining her personal practice and growing as an artist. The Visual Arts Award goes to Alysha Mostad. Congratulations and thank you, Alysha!

This year, the Esquimalt Theatre Department will be presenting a joint Theatre Technician Team Award. This award goes to an exemplary group of students who often would rather not be seen or acknowledged. Throughout their years at Esquimalt High School, they have dedicated countless hours of service to our performing arts programs in addition to supporting school based presentations and community rentals. They exemplify the collaboration, mentoring, and responsibility that is required to maintain a theatre space and support events. Their work in lighting, props, sets, costumes, and sound design have created the worlds to numerous Musical Theatre, Drama, Dance, and Improvisational Theatre performances. Their contributions will live in the walls of the theatre for years to come. It is with sincere gratitude and congratulations that we present this award to Brandon Billy, Goldie Beckett, Emilyne Horst, Katerina Kurz, Mack Mackenzie, and Sofia Neilson-Miller. JUNIOR THEATRE AWARD P R E S E N T E D T O J A C K I E F O R B E S

The Junior Theatre Award goes to the grade 9 or 10 student who has demonstrated exemplary performance in 2 or more areas of performing arts at Esquimalt High School.

The growth of an actor is a hard journey to define. It isn’t a straight line of goals to meet or milestones to cross, but instead it is a process of discovering and uncovering. As a young actor, many of the skill sets taught come down to mechanics: projection, diction, physical awareness, memorization and improvisation techniques. But it would be foolish to dismiss the importance of every actor’s foundation: who they are and who they are learning to be. The recipient of this year’s Junior Theatre Award is much more than the sum of her skill sets.

As a Grade 10 student, this year’s recipient has demonstrated that she is not defined only by roles she plays on stage but also by the impact she has as a cast mate. Her thoughtfulness in rehearsal, her courage to push herself into new skills and her kindness to her peers are just some of the ways she has earned this recognition. It has been a pleasure to watch her steady growth as a performer and a joy to support her as she continues to define herself as a leader, a partner and friend. Congratulations Jackie Forbes! SENIOR THEATRE AWARDS P R E S E N T E D T O K A R M E N L E G G E A N D C A R L Y Y O U N G

The Senior Theatre Award goes to the grade 11 or 12 student who has demonstrated exemplary performance in 2 or more areas of performing arts at Esquimalt High School. This year, the Senior Theatre Award is being awarded to two recipients. Both students exemplify teamwork, collaboration, leadership and generosity, so it is fitting that they share in this award together. Performing in theatre productions such as Drama, Musical Theatre and Improvisational Theatre requires the ability to transcend beyond self and contribute to the success of the team, cast and ensemble as a whole. Karmen Legge and Carly Young each represent these virtues in their own way.

Karmen Legge has been an active learner and leader in Improv for her full four years at Esquimalt. She has consistently demonstrated a growth mindset, commitment to excellence and served as a mentor to other learners and her peers. She interacts with others candidly, with honesty, kindness and insight. In Musical Theatre, Karmen developed the characters that she portrayed with careful thought, allowing her to connect and move the audience to laughter, tears, and anything in between. This attention to detail and willingness to explore the depths of her characters, encouraged others to feel safe to do the same. Karmen has been an integral part of our theatre program, ready and willing to support where needed, filling in where there were gaps, with a heart and mind toward making the show the best that it could be. She is a selfless, hardworking and talented performer. Congratulations, Karmen!

Carly Young has contributed her talents to the Esquimalt High School theatre department through choreography, script-writing and acting. Throughout her time at Esquimalt, she has played numerous roles in Musical Theatre and Drama productions, always performing to the best of her ability, as well as performing with and supporting the Esquimalt Acting Troupe (Improv). Carly approaches all areas of performance with professionalism and excellence, serving as a positive role model and leader for her peers. In her four years at ESQ, she has maintained at least one class in the theatre per semester, and in her senior years, she has honed her skills as a Teacher’s Assistant often leading workshops with her classmates. She is a talented writer, actor, choreographer, improviser, makeup artist and cheer leader. Carly is a large part of the heart of the theatre program. Congratulations, Carly! Paula Oelze is our very first International student to have ever won this award, and she is most deserving of it. She may come from the land of Karl Benz and Ferry Porsche, but her work ethic and drive to succeed are all her own and she deserves all the credit. Paula would not stop at accomplishing the tasks set out for her but she would seek out her own challenges as well. She also took over as crew chief of the school’s race car, and I very much hope she is able to be at the track in September to see her work in action. Paula was truly in a class of her own this year, and I hope she returns again in the fall – the shop wouldn’t be the same without her!

INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY AWARD P R E S E N T E D T O M A Y A N E L S O N The Innovation & Technology Award goes to a student in computers and technology who demonstrated excellence in their pursuit of learning in this area. This year's recipient is Maya Nelson. Maya joined us at Esquimalt High School partway through grade 11 and she brought with her skills in graphic design that quickly expanded into computer graphics and animation. In the classroom, Maya spent time collaborating with other students and digging into Blender to develop her skills in 3D animation and modelling techniques. In her Genius Hour projects, Maya pushed for excellence as she challenged herself with projects not only using Blender but also adding in additional components such as creating characters from blueprints. Maya has mentioned plans after high school may be spending time in the Armed Forces and then going to Vancouver Film School to pursue a career in 3D modelling/animation. She will definitely be one to look out for and watch in this very unique field. Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Athletics Awards

TRISH FORTIER SENIOR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR P R E S E N T E D T O M A G G I E S W A N

Trish Fortier was a teacher at Esquimalt for many years. Throughout her career, she did much more than teach Athletics. She was the curling academy administrator, a counselor, and a mother to many. She was always able to see the potential in every student and motivated them towards high achievement and excellence. Her strength in character was only matched by the compassion in her heart. The student-athlete who has earned this award has displayed outstanding dedication and athleticism over many sports, and has always been one of those players that coaches and teammates have admired for her positive outlook, dedication, and work ethic. Congratulations Maggie Swan for being the 2020 recipient of Top Senior Athlete! Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Athletics Awards PETER RUSHTON SENIOR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR P R E S E N T E D T O R A F A A R A U J O

Peter Rushton was both a PE teacher and coach at Esquimalt. Throughout his career he always displayed a great respect for true athletes and did his very best to help students develop both in character and athleticism. As an athlete of many sports, Peter always led by example on and off the field. The students always respected his toughness and dedication to making the game better through skill development. The 2020 recipient of the Peter Rushton Athlete of the Year is Rafael Araujo. Rafa is a student-athlete from Brazil and we feel very lucky to have been able to have him in the building over the past two years. Rafa is a genuine competitor that excels in all aspects of athletic ability, leadership and character. Congratulations Rafa Araujo!

JOSEPH BARLOW SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD P R E S E N T E D T O X A V I E R S T A R K

This award is named after a former teacher who died in 1953 at the early age of 36 after contracting polio. A sports enthusiast, Mr. Barlow always championed sportsmanship. He felt that qualities such as dedication, determination, teamwork, integrity, and fair play were taught most effectively by the athletes to each other. The award recipient for 2020 is Xavier Stark. Xavier has not only proven himself as one of our top overall athletes, but he also consistently proved his character and integrity with a calm and respectful leadership style. Congratulations Xavier! This prestigious achievement is often given when a team has an exceptional season by placing at the Island and/or BC Championships.

Other considerations for the award include: community service, continued progression of skills and results throughout the season, notable sportsmanship, and overall contributions to a positive school culture. The award often goes to teams that have collectively shown an equal commitment to academics as well as athletics.

This year’s Principal’s Cup is awarded to the Senior Boys Basketball Team.

The boys basketball group has competed with significant school pride this year and they achieved at a very high level due to their commitment to training and preparation. They consistently filled the stands during home games and brought staff, students, and parents into the building which led to a wonderful experience of school spirit.

Congratulations to student-athletes, coaches, and families involved in Senior Boys Basketball! 2019-2020 Roster

Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Service Awards

Esquimalt is blessed with a dynamic group of students who selflessly give of themselves. Some make a year long commitment to a particular cause or club, while others contribute concentrated amounts of time and energy to a specific short term event. Leadership, EYCI, Interact, Escape, the recycling program, theatre assistants and techs, grad activities, team managers, score keepers, minor officials, public forum activists… the list goes on. It is students like this that make Esquimalt a special place to be, and we thank them for their service to Esquimalt High School this year. Thank you for your service:

Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Pat Bohaker Grade 9 Service Award PRESENTED TO SADIE SCHNEIDER

The grade 9 service award has traditionally been given to someone who has shown exemplary service towards our school and the outside community. This particular student has been a part of the Theatre Tech group, a co-assistant stage manager for the musical, Tapestry sound Tech, hosted and toured numerous visitors, been a part of ESCAPE and EYCI and all the while has been a student athlete. She was described by their peers as a reliable leader who is always willing to step in when there is a gap. We are happy to present this years Grade 9 Service Award to Sadie Schneider.

Coralie Lomas Grade 10 Service Award PRESENTED TO KIERAN BROWN AND KYLE BROWN

We would like to honour Kyle Brown and Kieran Brown for their outstanding leadership and service as grade 10 students. Kyle and Kirean exemplify the qualities of leadership; they are confident, committed, honest and positive. Always reliable, both Kyle and Kieran accept volunteer opportunities with enthusiasm. Their leadership work benefits the staff and students of our school and extends into the Esquimalt community. This year Kyle and Kieran dedicated every Thursday afternoon for 5 months to supporting youth from our Esquimalt feeder school through the HEROS programs (Hockey Education Reaching Out Society). All who worked with them commented on their kind and responsive support. Thank you Kyle and Kieran for your ongoing commitment. Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Keith Cooper Grade 11 Service Award PRESENTED TO OLIVIA WOODS AND LASSAH JOHNSON

Esquimalt High School is fortunate to have a large number of active groups which provide avenues for our students to serve the school and community. The school and its surrounding community has always been a place where people support one another, and this culture of unity and generosity has produced a generation of youth for whom “paying it forward” is second nature.

Many students have given their time and effort this year in organizing fundraisers, food drives, awareness campaigns, greening projects, coaching, tutoring, and many other school activities. These students are true citizens in our school and community, and their work makes Esquimalt a welcoming, relevant, and vibrant place to live and learn. I would like take this opportunity to thank all of the students and staff who have contributed their time, energy, and support this year.

The Keith Cooper Award is traditionally given to a student who has demonstrated both service and schoolwork at an exceptional level, throughout the year. This year’s Keith Cooper Award winners are exceptional examples of this tradition of kindness, empathy, and service. While their leadership styles may differ, and at times were even at odds with one another, these two young ladies have always shared the common goal of making positive change in the world around them. Both have been involved in multiple school clubs and activities and community service roles. Both have shown themselves willing to support their peers and to lead with conviction and determination.

It is with great pleasure that we award this year’s Keith Cooper Award for grade 11 service to Lassah Johnson and Olivia Woods. Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Kiwanis Cup for Grade 12 Service Award PRESENTED TO: SHEYDA SHAMS

The Kiwanis Cup for Grade 12 Service is the major service award for grade 12 students. It is very difficult to decide this award because we have so many amazing grade 12s who commit countless hours to their community. This year’s recipient is Sheyda Shams.

During all of her time at Esquimalt, Sheyda has been at the forefront of almost every leadership activity in the school. She has been an invaluable member of the leadership group and has been planning one of the school’s major events, Santa’s Breakfast, since grade 9. She volunteers her time outside the school as well, helping with RibFest, AODA, the Rainbow Kitchen, and more. Sheyda also volunteers with VIHA at the Victoria General Hospital as a part of Step-Up Youth Program as one of the program advisors, mentoring other youth volunteers on patient care. She is one of our top students and has helped many others as a peer tutor. She is also a competitive skater and has spent countless hours as a volunteer skating instructor.

It is evident that lending a helping hand is in Sheyda’s nature. Always calm, always poised, Sheyda can be counted on to do the most thorough job in almost every situation. She operates with class, conscientiousness, and kindness in every endeavor. It is this demeanor that sets her apart. We know that Sheyda will continue to lead as she moves on into post- secondary. Contributing to the community is just a part of her fabric- she does not lead for the sake of recognition but rather because it is of intrinsic value to her. In addition, she has managed to do this with an extremely difficult course load! She's heading off into the field of STEM to study at Waterloo University and has recently been awarded the Women in Engineering scholarship at that institution.

Sheyda has said: “In my eyes, community service has never been a job or a task. To me, community service meant lending a helping hand wherever it was needed.”

Congratulations Sheyda and thank you so much for all you have done to contribute to our school community and the community at large. Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Ruth E. Layne Humanitarian Award PRESENTED TO NEAMAT BELAL

Neamat Belal was born in Syria, and spent her first years in the city of Aleppo. The second child and eldest daughter in a family of four children, she moved to in 2016 to escape the Syrian civil war. She first arrived at Esquimalt High School as a shy and reserved grade 9 student, but she will leave us having become a remarkably thoughtful and incredibly welcoming young woman who has always sought to make a difference in the lives of other newcomers.

Neamat was among the first Syrian students to arrive in the Greater Victoria School District. As such, there were few others, if any, to clear a path for her to follow, and everything around her was new and different. Because of her own experiences having been the new person, having felt what it is to have to try to become part of a group, Neamat has become the very type of person that she herself needed years ago.Throughout her four years at Esquimalt High, we have watched her seek out and welcome many other newcomers. For her, it has never mattered where they come from, what language they speak, or what faith they hold in their hearts; she sees them because she has been them, and she has welcomed them in turn.

The Ruth E. Layne Humanitarian award is presented to students who actively work against bullying, and who promote social tolerance. Neamat Belal truly embodies the spirit of ‘paying it forward’. She took her own personal challenges and struggles, and she has used them as motivation to help others feel less alone, less outside, more welcome, more included, and ultimately, more human. She is richly deserving of this award, and it is our pleasure to recognize Neamat Belal as the 2020 winner of the Ruth E. Layne Humanitarian Award. Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Standing Tall Award PRESENTED TO LUC FLETT

Luc Flett came to Esquimalt last year and from the very beginning we could tell he was going to be an important part of our community. Luc has struggled with some great losses and barriers over the past year and a half but he always remained committed to completing school and moving forward. Luc found a place in the art room and spent many hours there with friends and helped a great deal with the Art Gala this year.

Luc is kind, honest, open hearted and willing to learn and grow even when life’s challenges seem unsurmountable. Luc was nominated and received the Standing Tall award from Coast Capital this year which will assist him in continuing his education in the Visual Arts Program at Camosun. Luc knows how important art can be as an outlet for expression and sharing one’s story and he hopes to work with youth in the future assisting them in finding their gifts as well. He is planning on continuing his education in visual arts and social work as well as cultivating his skill in the painting trade.

The Esquimalt High community will miss Luc but know he is moving on to bigger and brighter things. Good Luck Luc! Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Global Citizenship Award PRESENTED TO KARMEN LEGGE

Karmen Legge has a passion for the planet and has worked to help students and staff at Esquimalt High School and across the school district reduce our impact on the ecosystems and natural resources we all depend on.

As president of the ESCAPE club, Esquimalt Students Caring About Peace and the Environment, Karmen has actively and consistently expressed her commitment to an ethic of global citizenship. Karmen was frustrated by waste accumulating around the school and disappointed by the limited recycling of certain materials by some local companies. Karmen set about collecting foil-lined and other flexible plastic packaging (think chip bags, granola bar wrappers), painstakingly cleaning each piece and drying them and then ironing these scraps together to create "plastic fabric". She inspired several members of the ESCAPE club to help out with the process during “Plastic Parties”. Planning to create some snazzy things out of this fabric such as pencil cases and shopping bags Karmen came up with the idea of selling these to raise funds to support other sustainability projects at the school.

These plastics are a small part of the school’s waste stream, but Karmen has also been key to continuing the broader recycling work school staff have supported for years. She has, often on her own, coordinated the collection, sorting, processing and distribution to outside agencies of a wide range of recyclable materials from around the school. Karmen also launched an effort by club members to gather information about the recycling program across the district’s schools. She wanted to raise awareness about the problems of collecting recyclable materials and also ensure that these materials were being recycled instead of simply put in the landfill.

Providing student perspective to school board and district leadership, promoting solutions to ocean plastics with community groups such as the Surfrider Foundation and supporting local peace and disarmament advocacy networks, Karmen has provided leadership and an outspoken student voice. Her hard work at Esquimalt has raised awareness in our community and especially among her fellow students about the responsibilities we all have to the other members of our global community, to care for each other and our planet and move toward a more sustainable future. Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Spirit of '65 Award PRESENTED TO ISOLDE ROBERTS WELBY

Isolde Roberts Welby is not typically the loudest voice in the room; she observes, she processes and then she presents what she can to move the situation forward. It’s these qualities that make Isolde the strong and inspirational leader that she is and it is for this reason that she has been chosen as the 2020 winner of the Spirit of ‘65 Award--- an award given to the “behind the scenes graduate” that simply makes our school a better place without any expectation of reward.

Isolde has not only excelled academically in ALL subjects but she has exemplified leadership, initiative and life balance. She pursues interests for the sake of the interests, not the resume. Ironically, Isolde does have the loudest voice in the room when she is immersed in her truest passions: spoken word and singing. Already she has been locally recognized for being one of the most talented young poets in the Victoria region, with one of the purest Baroque voices, as well. Leading our SLAM Poetry Team for 3 years, mentoring younger poets at our local middle school, taking the student lead on the maintenance of our Indigenous plant garden, and providing a nurturing environment for her urban fowl have all kept Isolde happily busy throughout high school. It is through these efforts and her mastery of the written word that has resulted in her recently winning one of the 55 BC Excellence Scholarships of $5000 and a $20,000 entrance scholarship for university. Lastly, Isolde was one of 545 LORAN scholarship semi-finalists from a pool of 5,194 of Canada’s top students. Congratulations, Isolde!

Those who know Isolde appreciate both the subtlety and relevance of her actions and words. Whether you are a human or a chicken, to know Isolde is to admire Isolde. Next year, Isolde will continue to pursue her studies at UVIC’s School of Music where she will continue to learn from others and undoubtedly inspire others. In her own words, “music and the arts are some of the few things that can incite meaningful change.” Without question, Isolde lives by these words and it will be not surprising that one day she will see the change that she aspires to create through her unbounded creative efforts. Ècole Secondaire Esquimalt High School Outstanding Student Award PRESENTED TO MIU SUZUKI

It is an honour to present the Outstanding Student Award. This award is Esquimalt High School’s most prestigious award. It is presented to a grade 12 student who has provided exemplary service and leadership throughout the school year, has practiced excellent citizenship, has achieved high academic standing, and has taken part in a variety of extra-curricular activities. This year’s winner absolutely reflects these attributes.

Congratulations Miu Suzuki. Miu - your motivation, compassion, integrity, and unwavering commitment to others is admirable. You do this with incredibly high standards while balancing all that you do. Simply put, you show incredible perseverance and model the way for others around you. I believe that Miu has many gifts. She has a unique ability to interact and build relationships with her peers regardless of how differently they may communicate or see the world. On any given day you can find Miu sharing her gifts in school supported programs like Best Buddies or volunteering her time with The Greater Victoria Down Syndrome Society as well as REACH, an inclusive community theatre company.

As Miu is an international student, I have had the privilege of being part of Miu’s experience in a foreign country. I am inspired by her pursuit of unfamiliar customs, her engagement in new ways of seeing the world and her work as an ally for so many of her peers who are learning to find their voice. Miu’s participation in programs like Sacred Circle and her exploration in the performing arts are more examples of how she values growth within herself as much as helping others.

Miu consistently demonstrates her passion for service and community. She has contributed to, volunteered for and participated in so many events that celebrate Esquimalt’s diversity that it is rare to not see Miu cheering on a sports team or waiting in the wings at a show. She is an academic, a humanitarian, a dancer, a singer, an actress, a writer, a leader and a friend. Miu, you are reliable, authentic, friendly, passionate and caring. You inspire others to embrace change and work to create greater inclusion and equity for all. Always poised, you tackle any challenge with commitment and kindness. You have been a wonderful role model. You exemplify the phrase “Service above Self” and we will miss you at ESQ. Please join us in congratulating Esquimalt High School’s Outstanding Student – Miu Suzuki. Thank you
