Kamau Bell “How can he be dating Kim Kardashian and still be the biggest ass in that relationship?” There is no virus – Don’t listen to rdzr! When you listen to the album though, you’ll wish you had a virus instead… NAR really needs to relocate everything in the “rap” genre to the “pop” genre. From “Jesus walks” to “I am a god” well played kanye…. well played. As shite as ever. That’s boring! You’re boring everybody! QUIT BORING EVERYONE. No joeyjones! rap is not pop! They are recognised as different genres worldwide and they will remain so. Just like why death metal is not country! LOL Thanks NAR. Speechless on this noise…..Dam for real Ye’? You went from Soulful work to experimental late night with Craig Ferguson Diddy Doowop Electronica Synth Garbage…….Its all about production and feeling, and I ain’t feeling either of it….Maybe one day it will change… I’ve been waiting to hear this… Eff you haters. PLEASE REUPLOAD LINK IS DEAD. Judge Mental, I think you’ve missed joeyjones’ point here. No Nik – he said everything!…which is a ridiculous statement really. Ok? No, Judge, you certainly missed the point. Dot A and Dot C were given to you, assume that Dot B lies somewhere between them. Now connect them… Judge….you do know the Pop is just short for popular, right? As in, what is easily palatable to the majority. Rap has declined to that point for the most part. He did not say all rap should be considered Pop, just the shite NAR posts up. On a side note, it isn’t quite true as NAR has posted a couple of albums worthwhile…and it was free. ‘Magine that…. joeyjones Said, NAR really needs to relocate everything in the “rap” genre to the “pop” genre. READ THE FROSTIE COMMENT. IN FULL. EVERY WORD INCLUDING THE WORD ‘EVERYTHING’ HAHAHA. This album is wack though. no judge, u r mental, u missed the point, stop beein so juvenile. Everyone professionally involved with the creation of Kanye West's sixth solo effort was sworn to secrecy, and with no preorders allowed, plus the news that producer Rick Rubin was still tinkering with tracks seven days prior to the drop, this instant, no-singles, anti-hype album got pre- release hyped on an Olympic scale. Think of the roll-up as a revolutionary blow against the empire or the supernova ego of West in full effect, and while it's probably a little of both, Yeezus the album is a lot of both, with good taste and bad taste both turned up to 11. This aggro-industrial earthquake with booming bass and minimal synths balances groundbreaking hip-hop lyrics ("New Slaves" is a bizarre, layered concept clash where high fashion, slavery, and "I'd rather be a dick than a swallower" all collide) with punkish, irresponsible blast-femy (during the draggy, trap track "I'm in It," West's melodious and melancholy voice shouts its dreams to the multitude, pleading "Your titties, let 'em out, free at last/Thank God almighty, they free at last" as if civil rights and booty calls were equally noble quests), and it all works in an astonishing, compelling manner.

DOCUMENT RESUME ED 390 402 IR 055 749 AUTHOR Anthony, Kathleen S. TITLE Censorship of Popular Music: An Analysis of Lyrical Content. PUB DATE Jul 95 NOTE 38p.; Masters Research Paper, Kent State University. PUB TYPE Dissertations/Theses Undetermined (040) EDRS PRICE MF01/PCO2 Plus Postage. DELCRIPTORS Art; *Censorship; *Content Analysis; Moral Values; Obscenity; *Popular Music; Rock Music; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS *Lyrics; Rap Music ABSTRACT This study analyzes the lyrical content of popular music recordings, cited as censored from 1986 through 1995, in order to examine chavacteristics of the recordings that were found to be objectionable and the frequency with which the objections occurred. Out of 60 articles from the music trade magazines, "Billboard" and "Rolling Stone," 77 instances of censorship were recorded and analyzed. The categories for evaluation were the year of citation, music style, and reason for censorship. Nineteen ninety was the year with the highest number of journal articles (21) covering music censorship. Rap (487.) and rock (44.27.) music accounted for a large portion of the total censored recordings and the majority of recordings were censored because of lyrics seen as explicit, profane, obscene or vulgar. In addition, five rock recordings were censored because of objectionable artwork on or inside the covers. Recordings were also censored because of opposition to a view the artist expressed. Two tables depict the years of citation and the reasons for censorship, each according to music styles. Appendices contain a list of the music censorship articles and a coding form for the year of citation, music style, and reason for censorship.

Using Visual Basic for Application scripts, I compile a dataset that includes profanity counts from 2688 songs (1970-2012) and 2186 movies (1980-2012) in order to analyze the effect of the Parental Advisory Label. This study finds that, using differences-in-differences estimators, there was a decrease in profanity in popular music following the adoption of the label. Furthermore, after evaluating the survival characteristics of number one hits, we find significant reductions in the longevity of songs with profanity; which implies the decrease in profanity following the labeling may be due to an artist response to consumer preferences.

There has been a similar warning on CDs and DVDs for many years. It is now the turn of songs that are available for purchase on the Internet. Apple's iTunes Store has led the way online for several years by stating whether or not a download contains words unsuitable for children’s ears. It places the word ‘explicit’ next to songs parents need to be warned about. It also puts the logo ‘clean’ next to songs that people might mistake for being explicit. The warning for explicit lyrics will now appear next to music and video files on sites such as Amazon and Napster. This will allow parents to monitor whether their children’s music is too old for them. The scheme was set up by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Like many other young children, Karenna had heard Prince’s music on the radio and wanted to hear more. Upon listening to the full album Karenna alerted her mother to the provocative nature of some of Prince’s lyrics, such as the track “Darling Nikki,” which contained the lyrics “I knew a girl named Nikki/Guess you could say she was a sex fiend/I met her in a hotel lobby/Masturbating with a magazine.”1 Tipper and Karenna Gore were embarrassed and ashamed that they were listening to such vulgar music, that they were doing so in their home. Deviance and profanity, something that one would expect to find in the street or back alleys had gotten into their home, albeit unwittingly. Tipper Gore soon realized that similar content was being broadcast into their home through other mediums, such as the new, wildly popular Music Television (MTV).

  • Sounding Subjectivity: Music, Gender, and Intimacy
Sounding Subjectivity: Music, Gender, and Intimacy DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Lindsay Marie Bernhagen Graduate Program in Comparative Studies The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Professor Barry Shank, Advisor Professor Mary E. Thomas Professor Maurice E. Stevens Copyright by Lindsay Marie Bernhagen 2013 Abstract This dissertation centers on the role of musical experience in the production and maintenance of intimate, interpersonal relationships. Music acquires meaning in its ability to enable and amplify personal relationships among participants who share musical experience—not only through the semiotic decoding of lyrics and musical sounds that characterizes much music scholarship. Because there is scant language available for describing musical experience without reference to non-sonic elements such as lyrics, communal identity, or performers’ personae, this research relies on textual and ethnographic methods to examine how human experiences of musical sound are understood via racialized and gendered discourses of embodiment, intimacy, pleasure, and danger. Specifically, this project consists of textual analyses of music censorship discourse and ethnographic analyses of female musicians and listeners who seek out shared musical experiences in explicitly gendered contexts including a feminist punk movement, a girls’ rock music camp, and a long-standing women’s music festival. The introductory chapter offers an overview of the scholarship and theory that has influenced this project and sets up the theoretical framework I have developed through my own research. To establish the stakes of this project, the second chapter focuses on discourses of musical danger to reveal ii a persistent and anxious fascination with music’s relationship to the body and intimacy in the American imagination.

The first documented instance of music censorship was after the Civil War. Pro-southern songs were banned during Reconstruction because the US government thought that they would stir up revolution and pro- Southern feelings.1 After that, the menace was jazz, whose swinging beat was thought to be corrupting to white youth. The efforts to suppress jazz were mainly local and limited to city governments wanting to ban young people from going to jazz shows.2 When rock n’ roll became popular in the 1950s, and Elvis became famous nationwide, music censorship started becoming a national issue.

  • An Examination of Parental Awareness and Mediation
AN EXAMINATION OF PARENTAL AWARENESS AND MEDIATION OF MEDIA CONSUMED BY FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS by DUSTIN MICHAEL SPRINGER B.S., Elementary Education, Kansas State University, 1997 M.S., Elementary Education, Kansas State University, 2000 M.S., Educational Leadership, Pittsburg State University, 2009 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Curriculum and Instruction College of Education KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2011 Abstract This dissertation investigated parental roles in mediating television, music, and the Internet for their children--specifically their fifth graders. Seventy two parents, representing forty seven fifth graders took part in the study. The Television Mediation Scale (Valkenburg, Kremar, Peeters, & Marseille, 1991) provided a framework for the instrument used. Parents were asked a series of questions dealing with television, music, and the Internet. Responses were given on a four point Likert scale. Additionally, participants were asked to estimate the amount of time spent with each medium, discuss the rules in place, the concerns they have with the media, and what principles guide their decisions about how their child uses each type of media. Regarding television, results indicated that parents utilized the restrictive mediation style in which parents set rules for viewing television programs or even prohibit certain shows from being seen. Although parents report using restrictive mediation, more than likely co-viewing is being used most frequently (Weaver & Barbour, 1992). This is plausible when applied to this study considering how close the Mean values are between restrictive mediation (3.36) and co- viewing (3.28). Statistically, no significant findings were reported in regards to music and Internet mediation.
