The present map shows just the original Republic, pre-dating the merger of Stellaland and Goshen to form the United States of Stellaland. The map is drawn by R.A. Lavertine and published in the Surveyor General's Department in Cape Town, in 1884. OCLC reports that the Lavartine's map survives in two recorded examples (British Library and University of Leiden). A smaller copy of the map was produced in 1885 by Augustus Petermann in Germany. Biology Classification Zebras have a distinctive striped pattern that makes them easily recognizable to most people, but they also display features common to many other animals. It’s a question that scientists have been asking for more than 100 years but now new research may nally have an answer. Most animal species have developed distinctive colours and patterns to help disguise them in their natural environment. Like a soldier’s camouage, the colouring and patterns look like the background, so it's hard to tell the dierence between the animal and its surroundings. But zebras live on brown grassy plains and their stripes make them stand out, not disappear. They may as well be holding signs for the lions saying, “come and eat me”. Now we may have the answer. By studying where most zebras live, scientists have found that the animals share their home with lots of nasty biting tsetse ies and horse ies. They also discovered that these ies don’t like striped patterns and will stay away from them. So, it’s likely that the zebras developed stripes to act as an insect repellent. That may sound crazy – to make yourself a target for lions just to keep away the ies. But these aren’t ordinary irritating ies. Tsetse ies carry diseases that can kill, while horse ies tear the animals’ skins leaving them at risk of infections. -

List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". The dentition pattern allows identification of age up to five years. We also conclude that annual lines in the tooth cementum can be used to determine the age in years for wild asses older than five years after longitudinal tooth sections were made with a low- speed precision saw. The first upper incisor proved to be most suitable for age determination, although the starting time of cement deposition is different between the labial and lingual sides of the tooth. The accurate age of the wild ass can be determined from the number of annual lines and the time before the first forma- tion of the cementum at the respective side of the tooth. It is difficult to treat: recurrence rate is high and no single universally effective treatment for ES is known. Viscum album extracts (VAE) are used as adjunct in the treatment of some human cancers without known side effects. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that the long-term therapy with VAE (Iscador® P) is effective in Equine Sarcoids as a single treatment or as an adjunct treatment to selective surgical excision. Material and methods: Of 53 horses with ES, 42 were treated solely with VAE as monotherapy and 11 were treated after selective excision of ES. Horses were randomly assigned to the treatment group (VAE; n=32) or control group (Placebo; n=21). The horses received rising concentrations of Iscador® P extract from 0.1 mg per ml to 20 mg per ml or physiological NaCl solution 3 times a week over 105 days s.c. -

These protected areas are often small and fenced in order to meet the needs of expanding human communities and to conserve wildlife. This creates challenges for the management of wide-ranging animals such as large carnivores, especially those that compete with one another for limited resources. This study focused on resource partitioning between GPS-GSM collared spotted hyenas (hereafter referred to as hyenas) and lions in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) and Borana Conservancy (BC), Kenya. Scat analysis revealed that hyenas and lions show a high degree of dietary overlap, though hyenas have broader diets and feed on livestock species, which lions completely avoid. -

CHAPTER 4 _____________________________________________________________________ PLANT BREEDING David Luckett and Gerald Halloran _____________________________________________________________________ WHAT IS PLANT BREEDING AND WHY DO IT? Plant breeding, or crop genetic improvement, is the production of new, improved crop varieties for use by farmers. The new variety may have higher yield, improved grain quality, increased disease resistance, or be less prone to lodging. Ideally, it will have a new combination of attributes which are significantly better than the varieties already available. The new variety will be a new combination of genes which the plant breeder has put together from those available in the gene pool of that species. It may contain only genes already existing in other varieties of the same crop, or it may contain genes from other distant plant relatives, or genes from unrelated organisms inserted by biotechnological means. The breeder will have employed a range of techniques to produce the new variety. The new gene combination will have been chosen after the breeder first created, and then eliminated, thousands of others of poorer performance. This chapter is concerned with describing some of the more important genetic principles that define how plant breeding occurs and the techniques breeders use. Plant breeding is time-consuming and costly. It typically takes more than ten years for a variety to proceed from the initial breeding stages through to commercial release. An established breeding program with clear aims and reasonable resources will produce a new variety regularly, every couple of years or so. Each variety will be an incremental improvement upon older varieties or may, in rarer circumstances, be a quantum improvement due to some novel gene, the use of some new technique or a response to a new pest or disease. -

Switzerland Stéphane MONTAVON Colonel Stéphane MONTAVON has been the Chief Veterinary Officer of the Swiss Army since 2003. He obtained his veterinary degree and completed his doctoral thesis at the Vetsuisse veterinary faculty in Bern. He was successively head of clinic at the Federal Army Horse Reserve in Bern, head of clinic at the National Stud in Avenches, resident and clinician at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at UC Davis (USA). He is a long-time member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). He specializes in equine sports medicine and is an excellent rider and an official veterinarian of the (FEI) Federation Equestre Internationale. RESUME Sédation et anesthésie chez les chevaux et mules militaires. Revue et utilisation dans l'armée suisse. L'armée suisse utilise depuis plus de 100 ans différents types de chevaux pour des missions spéciales. Trois races sont utilisées : Les chevaux de race demi-sang suisse pour l'équitation, les chevaux Franches-Montagnes et les mulets comme « chevaux de bât » pour le transport. Cet article passe en revue les substances, dosages et voies d'administration qui permettent de réaliser des sédations et des anesthésies simples chez le cheval comme sur le mulet, dans le terrain et dans un contexte militaire. Cette contribution est aussi destinée aux autres armées qui utilisent des mulets dans la mesure où la littérature n'est pas très riche dans ce domaine.
