    Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. I met him once, many years ago, at the Molde International Jazz Festival. He was a very kind man, and when he realized I was doing some useful work on ja zz tenor saxophone, he invited me to his hotel room for whisky. We had a very nice time together in the light summer night of Norway! Early history: His brother, a saxophonist, gave Buddy an alto in 1925. Two years later began gigging with McCloud's Night Owls (led by his cousin, trumpeter Roy McCloud). In 1929 played for several months in Wichita Falls with the St. Louis Merrymakers, later that year joined Troy Floyd's Band in San Antonio. Briefly with Gene Coy's Band, then with Terrence Holder's 12 Clouds of Joy from 1930-33. Worked with E. J. Malone and his Rhythm Kings (early 1933), Wesley Smiths' Band, ‘Tan Town Topics’, and Ethel May's Band before joining Count Basie in Little Rock, Arkansas (ca. July 1934). From late 1934 until early summer 1935 with Andy Kirk, played with band at Wiley College, Texas, then long spell with Nat Towles until joining Count Basie in spring 1939. Remained with Basie until September 1948, brief return in early 1949, then for the rest of that year worked mostly with Hot Lips Page, occasionally with Lucky Millinder.

    Reading About Jazz Gene Lees was a well trained journalist, jazz lyricist, and an editor of Downbeat in the early 60s. For nearly 30 years he published Jazzletter, a monthly collection of his own essays and, occasionally, selected writing from other contributors. Collections of these essays, nearly all about music, and most about musicians he knew intimately, were published as seven books, including Waiting for Dizzy, Meet Me at Jim and Andy's, Cats of Any Color, Singers and the Song, Friends Along the Way, You Can't Steal a Gift. Gene also wrote biographies of Woody Herman (Leader of the Band), Oscar Peterson , Johnny Mercer (Portrait of Johnny), and the songwriting team, Lerner and Loewe (I've read and enjoyed all but the last, which I've not seen). Lees, who died in 2010, wrote from the perspective of an insider who knew nearly of the people he wrote about, most of them very well. His writing is direct, well researched, and nearly always quite perceptive in the assessment of his subjects. All of it is worth reading. Doug Ramsey is another professional journalist who writes about jazz as a well informed insider. His excellent blog, Rifftides, is mostly about jazz, and includes reviews of CDs, DVDs, books, and an occasional live performance. His biography of alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, who had been his close friend for more than two decades, may be the best ever written about a creative artist and the creative process. Jazz Matters is a nice collection of Doug's essays. Jazz bassist Bill Crow contributed Jazz Anecdotes, and From Birdland to Broadway.

It contains lead sheets to her own and other people’s compositions and manuscript scores of many of her arrangements for Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Mary Lou Williams, among others. One extensive series contains numerous arrangements for Randy Weston, and her late computer scores for him are also present. PROCESSING INFORMATION The collection was processed, and a finding aid created, by Kristin McGee in 2000 and the finding aid was updated by Laurie Lee Moses in 2010 and Heidi Marshall in 2020. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Melba Liston was a jazz composer, arranger, and performer born in 1926. She was a trombonist during an era (1942–1985) when few women played brass instruments and even fewer toured with jazz bands. She played in the bands of several important jazz musicians, including Count Basie, Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Randy Weston, and Quincy Jones. Liston had an active career as an arranger for important jazz composers as well as popular music record labels. She also worked with youth orchestras in the troubled neighborhood of Watts, California, leaving the United States to teach at the Jamaica Institute of Music for six years (1973–1979).

    Jazz Jazz is a uniquely American music genre that began in New Orleans around 1900, and is characterized by improvisation, strong rhythms including syncopation and other rhythmic invention, and enriched chords and tonal colors. Early jazz was followed by Dixieland, swing, bebop, fusion, and free jazz. Piano, brass instruments especially trumpets and trombones, and woodwinds, especially saxophones and clarinets, are often featured soloists. Jazz in Missouri Both St. Louis and Kansas City have played important roles in the history of jazz in America. Musicians came north to St. Louis from New Orleans where jazz began, and soon the city was a hotbed of jazz. Musicians who played on the Mississippi riverboats were not really playing jazz, as the music on the boats was written out and not improvised, but when the boats docked the musicians went to the city’s many clubs and played well into the night. Some of the artists to come out of St. Louis include trumpeters Clark Terry, Miles Davis and Lester Bowie, saxophonist Oliver Nelson, and, more recently, pianist Peter Martin. Because of the many jazz trumpeters to develop in St. Louis, it has been called by some “City of Gabriels,” which is also the title of a book on jazz in St. Louis by jazz historian and former radio DJ, Dennis Owsley. Jazz in Kansas City, like jazz in St. Louis, grew out of ragtime, blues and band music, and its jazz clubs thrived even during the Depression because of the Pendergast political machine that made it a 24-hour town. Because of its location, Kansas City was connected to the “territory bands” that played the upper Midwest and the Southwest, and Kansas City bands adopted a feel of four even beats and tended to have long solos.
