Mr. Gray has classical studies and degrees in cello performance at Chicago Musical College, his history as a enjoyed a four decades plus career in which he has performed and collaborated with a long list of double bassist in Civic Orchestra and as substitute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and some of the world’s most important jazz artists, including Jack DeJohnette, Larry Coryell, Steve inumerable recordings and performances in Chicago's concert and club venues, most notably the Turre, Gary Bartz, Barry Harris, Benny Golson, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Williams, McCoy Tyner, iconic Jazz Showcase, and its major recording studios.. Ira Sullivan, Jackie McLean, Sonny Stitt, James Moody, Sonny Stitt, Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, Clark Terry, J.J. Johnson, George Coleman, Lee Konitz, Benny Green, and Eddie “Lockjaw” Larry has recorded with Jack DeJohnette, Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams, Henry Davis, Eddie Harris and Les McCann, among many others. Threadgill, Ramsey Lewis, Nancy Wilson, Curtis Fuller, Ira Sullivan, Lin Halliday, Jodie Christian, Willie Pickens, Nicholas Payton, Randy Brecker, Bunky Green, Bob Moses, Irish He has five solo recordings to his credit, Solo + Quartet, Gravity, 1,2,3, One Look and Three Equals musicians Larry Nugent, John Williams and Bohola, pop sensations Linda Eder, Dennis One.. Among many projects as a collaborator or sideman, he appeared on many CDs during his DeYoung, Jim Peterik and Peter Cetera, and songwriter Michael Smith, among others. The twelve years as a member of the Ramsey Lewis Trio, including Appossianata and Meant to Be, with recording Jack DeJohnette Made in Chicago, is was released in March 2015 followed by a series of Nancy Wilson, and many other jazz recordings. Through the years, he has toured with many historic concerts including the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival Larry was artists, including Jack DeJohnette, Larry Coryell, Joe Williams, Clark Terry, Frank Wess,, Monty seen on several episodes of the PBS series hosted by Ramsey Lewis, Legends of Jazz, with artists Alexander, James Moody, Marian McPartland, Dorothy Donegan, Steve Turre and Ramsey like Jim Hall, Clark Terry, Chris Potter, Phil Woods, Roy Hargrove and Benny Golson. Other recent projects include Gray Wilkerson Ra Trio, featuring the internationally acclaimed Ed Wilkerson and Avreeayl Ra, his own longtime trio with guitarist John Moulder and drummer Charles Heath, a duo project with Mr. Moulder and an improvisational trio with Mr. Wertico and multimedia artist and improviser David Cain, Wertico Cain and Gray. One other recent collaboration was an evening of duos with double bass and U of I faculty artists John Dee, Jonathan Keeble, Yvonne Redman and Barrington Coleman. Larry has toured extensively, performing at jazz festivals and clubs, including the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, The Montreaux Detroit Festival, the ECM Festival, the Poznan Jazz Festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, the Havana Jazz Festival, Rio Sao Paulo Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Johannesburg International Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, Village Vanguard, the Blue Notes in Tokyo, Nagoya, New York and Milan, Ronnie Scott’s in London, Zawinal’s Birdland in Vienna, and the Ravinia Festival, with such jazz luminaries as Marian McPartland, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson Roscoe Mitchell, James Moody, Larry Coryell, Louis Bellson, Barry Harris, Dorothy Donegan, Monty Alexander, Frank Wess, Joe Williams, Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band, and Kenny Drew Jr. Larry toured the world as the bassist in the Ramsey Lewis trio from 1998-2010. .

Laurence Hobgood . --The Independent (UK) Best known for his collaboration with vocalist Kurt Elling, multiple Grammy-nominee and 2010 Grammy-winner Laurence Hobgood has enjoyed a multi-faceted and dynamic career. Musical Director for Elling since 1995, he’s played on, composed, arranged and co-produced all of Elling’s CDs (six for Blue Note and three for Concord), each Grammy- nominated. 2009’s Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sings The Music Of Coltrane and Hartman, recorded live at Lincoln Center, won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Vocal Jazz Record. Hobgood began formal piano study at age six in Dallas, Texas, where his father was Chairman of the Southern Methodist University theatre program. At age 12, he was introduced to gospel and blues through his family's church. Several years later, after moving to Illinois, he began formal training in jazz. He attended the University of Illinois, where he played for three years in the "A" jazz ensemble led by John Garvey. During that time his classical study continued with Ian Hobson. After moving to Chicago in 1988, he established a local presence leading his own quintet and joining forces with some of Chicago's premier players, including Ed Peterson, Fareed Haque, and most importantly seven-time Grammy Award-winning drummer, Paul Wertico. The group, Trio New, with Hobgood, Wertico, and bassist Eric Hochberg, played to critical acclaim and established a serious connection with Wertico that spans many projects and ensembles.

    Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. We’re at his apartment in Manhattan, on 55th Street on the West Side of Manhattan. I feel honored to be here. Thanks very much for inviting me into your home. BP: Thank you. TBW: How long have you been here, in this location? BP: Over forty years. Or more, actually. This is such a nice location. I’ve lived in other places—I was in California for about ten years, but I’ve always kept this place because it’s so centrally located. Of course, when I was doing Broadway, it was great, because I can practically stumble from my house to Broadway, and a lot of times it came in handy when there were snow storms and things, when other musicians had to come in from Long Island or New Jersey, and I could be on call. It really worked very well for me in those days. TBW: You played Broadway for many years, is that right? BP: Yeah. TBW: Starting when? BP: I left Count Basie in 1963, and I started doing Broadway about 1964. TBW: At that time Broadway was not, nor is it now, particularly integrated. I think you and Joe Wilder were among the first to integrate Broadway. BP: It’s funny how it’s turned around. When I began in the early 1960s, there were very few black musicians on Broadway, then in about 1970, when I went to California, it was beginning to get more integrated.

Skip to Content Search Cal Poly News News California Polytechnic State University Sept. 11, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jazz Trio Plays Spanos Theatre Oct. 4 SAN LUIS OBISPO – In a spectacular showcase featuring jazz greats Bill Frisell (guitar/banjo), Jack DeJohnette (drums, percussion, piano) and Jerome Harris (electric bass/vocals), Cal Poly Arts launches its new 2006-07 performing arts season. The trio of master musicians will perform on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at 8 p.m. in the Spanos Theatre. The evening will include highlights from the acclaimed release, “The Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers.” Recorded at Seattle’s Earshot Festival in October 2001, “The Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers” brilliantly captures the collaboration of two unparalleled musical visionaries: Jack DeJohnette -- “our era’s most expansive percussive talent” (Jazz Times) -- and Bill Frisell, “the most important jazz guitarist of the last quarter of the 20th century” (Acoustic Guitar). DeJohnette and Frisell first worked together in 1999. “We immediately had a rapport and we talked about doing more,” DeJohnette recalls. Frisell needed no convincing: “I have been such a fan of Jack’s since the late ’60s when I first heard him,” the guitarist says. “He’s been such an influence and inspiration throughout my musical life.” The two got together the afternoon before the 2001 Earshot concert and at the soundcheck, ran through a couple of numbers, but the encounter was largely improvised. “We had a few themes prepared,” Frisell says, “but it was pretty much just start playing, and go for it.” According to DeJohnette, “Bill and I co-composed in real time, on the spot” for “The Elephant Sleeps...” The album features 11 tracks covering a breadth of sonic territories.
