Some have lost almost everything in the flood, Some have lost a little, and some have lost nothing... Our hearts go out to all who have lost, and thanks to all who have reached out to help others. Due to the flooding, last month’s meeting, at LIGO, was cancelled. The September meeting will be on the 12th at the Observatory, which did not receive any water during the flood, thus BRAS suffered no loss of property. As part of our Outreach effort. If anyone you know has any telescope and/or equipment that was in water during the flood, let us know and we will try to help clean, adjust, etc. the equipment. On September 2nd (I am a little late with this message), Dr. Alan Stern, the New Horizons Primary Investigator, gave two talks at LSU. The morning talk was for Astronomy graduate students, and was a little technical. -

That quote elegantly expresses just one man’s thoughts. What attracted you to astronomy? What do you tell people who ask? I think we all have experienced some indefinable draw to the night sky and the wonders of the universe. Maybe that is it. Wonder. At least for me it is. Wonder, beauty, harmony, perspective. Where does it end? Think about those things and let me know if you have something about that you would like to say at our next meeting. Alternately, you could write up something for this newsletter. Well the total lunar eclipse certainly was a washout. -

Abstract We report on high-resolution and spatially-resolved spectra of Io in the 4.0 µm region, recorded with the VLT/CRIRES instrument in 2008 and 2010, which provide the first detection of the 1+3 band of SO2 in Io’s atmosphere. Data are analyzed to constrain the latitudinal, longitudinal, and diurnal distribution of Io’s SO2 atmosphere as well as its characteristic temperature. equatorial SO2 column densities clearly show longitudinal 17 -2 asymmetry, but with a maximum of ~1.5x10 cm at central meridian longitude L = 200-220 16 -2 and a minimum of ~3x10 cm at L = 285-300, the longitudinal pattern somewhat differs from earlier inferences from Ly α and thermal IR measurements. Within the accuracy of the measurements, no evolution of the atmospheric density from mid-2008 to mid-2010 can be distinguished. The decrease of the SO2 column density towards high latitude is apparent, and the typical latitudinal extent of the atmosphere found to be ±40° at half-maximum. -

Meteor Activity Outlook for November 14-20, 2020 During this period, the moon reaches its new phase on Sunday November 15th. At this time, the moon is located near the sun and is invisible at night. As this period progresses, the waxing crescent moon will enter the evening sky but will not interfere with meteor observations, especially during the more active morning hours. The estimated total hourly meteor rates for evening observers this week is near 4 as seen from mid-northern latitudes and 3 as seen from tropical southern locations (25S). For morning observers, the estimated total hourly rates should be near 20 as seen from mid- northern latitudes (45N) and 14 as seen from tropical southern locations (25S). The actual rates will also depend on factors such as personal light and motion perception, local weather conditions, alertness, and experience in watching meteor activity. Note that the hourly rates listed below are estimates as viewed from dark sky sites away from urban light sources. Observers viewing from urban areas will see less activity as only the brighter meteors will be visible from such locations. The radiant (the area of the sky where meteors appear to shoot from) positions and rates listed below are exact for Saturday night/Sunday morning November 14/15. These positions do not change greatly day to day so the listed coordinates may be used during this entire period. Most star atlases (available at science stores and planetariums) will provide maps with grid lines of the celestial coordinates so that you may find out exactly where these positions are located in the sky. -

Architecture for space-based exoplanet spectroscopy in the mid- infrared Joseph Green*, Case Bradford, Thomas Gautier, Michael Rodgers, Erkin Sidick and Gautam Vasisht Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, 4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, CA 91109 ABSTRACT Characterizing exoearths at wavelength about 10 micron offers many benefits over visible coronagraphy. Apart from providing direct access to a number of significant bio-signatures, direct-imaging in the mid-infrared can provides 1000 times or more relaxation to contrast requirements while greatly shortening the time-scales over which the system must be stable. This in-turn enables tremendous relief to optical manufacturing, control and stability tolerances bringing them in- line with current technology state of the art. In this paper, we explore a reference design that co-optimizes a large segmented linearized aperture telescope with one-dimensional phase-induced aperture apodization providing high-contrast imaging for spectroscopic analysis. By rotating about a parent star, the chemical signatures of its planets are characterized while affording additional means for background suppression.
