HOW TO READ THIS DATABASE This list records Australian media and organisations wrongly identifying Ms Arndt as a “doctor”, a “psychologist” and/or a “clinical psychologist” (or sometimes a combination or more than one) from January 2006 until January 26 2020. The database includes print, online, radio and television. It does not purport to be a complete list of the misrepresentations that occurred over that time period - New Matilda considers this database a ‘living document’, and it will be updated as more and more examples come to hand. Where possible, online stories which are not behind paywalls have been hyperlinked in this document. All of the Sky News errors before December 2016 are listed in the ‘Other publications table, because Sky News was jointly owned by News Corporation, Channel 9 and Channel 7 prior to this time. All errors after this date are credited to News Corp, which fully acquired Sky News from its partners. If you have an additional story/s that you think should be added to this database, or you believe a story has been unfairly included, you can contact the editor by emailing here.

KEY FACTS • Of the 179 times Ms Arndt was falsely identified, New Matilda could find only four occasions where the error was corrected. The first of those is a radio story which appeared on the ABC in 2014 (although a print version of the story remains uncorrected online). The second is a story that appeared in New Matilda in 2007. The third and fourth story, ironically, were written by Nina Funnell on January 26 this year. Ms Funnell, who is the co-author of this investigation, wrote an article for news.com.au, and it was syndicated to the Gold Coast Bulletin and other publications. A subbing error captioned two images wrongly – describing Ms Arndt as a “psychologist” and a “clinical psychologist”. Ms Funnell sought and received an urgent correction. • Of the 179 false representations, more than half (107) occurred within the last two years. Two-thirds of the false representations (118) came from News Corp publications. • One out of every five mistakes (24) were made by The Australian/Weekend Australian, despite the fact Ms Arndt has written for the publication for around a decade, and despite the fact News Corp has hundreds of mastheads and programs.

• The Australian/Weekend Australian falsely described Ms Arndt as a “psychologist” 21 times in the second half of 2018 alone. Seven of those errors were in the publication’s editorial. • During the same period, The Australian/Weekend Australian twice falsely described Ms Arndt as a doctor. • Thanks to News Corp’s syndication of his writing, conservative columnist Andrew Bolt has wrongly described Ms Arndt as a “psychologist” or “clinical psychologist” in at least 39 separate reproductions of five articles over 11 months (August 2018-July 2019). The articles were circulated in print in every Australian state and territory, plus online. In a single month - September 2018 – Mr Bolt falsely described Ms Arndt in 30 individual publications. And that’s just print. • Mr Bolt also regularly repeated the false descriptions of Ms Arndt on his Sky News program, The Bolt Report. Since 2016, Ms Arndt has been interviewed by Mr Bolt on the show on 11 occasions, and she was misidentified on nine of them. • Andrew Bolt has, by a considerable margin, the worst record in this database for falsely describing Bettina Arndt, and that doesn’t take into account the syndication of his columns, or the syndication of The Bolt Report on Sky News. In September last year, for example, a clip of The Bolt Report featuring Ms Arndt was posted on at least 10 News Corp sites around the country, with all of them wrongly describing her as a “clinical psychologist”. These errors have not been attributed to Mr Bolt, because they were likely written by a staff member (although it’s reasonable to assume the errors were based on Mr Bolt’s false introduction in the show). Mr Bolt falsely identified Ms Arndt in five different articles, and on nine occasions on The Bolt Report, giving him at least 14 individual false descriptions in a period spanning just two years. • The second worst performer in this list is the ‘editorial writer’ for The Australian with seven errors in a nine-month period, followed by Ms Arndt herself. This list includes four occasions (in 2006/07) when Ms Arndt’s own biography on her News Corp column falsely described her as a “clinical psychologist”. • Miranda Devine is also a ‘top performer’, both in print and on radio, with at least five false representations – four on radio, one in print. In one radio interview alone, Devine falsely describes Ms Arndt three times. • Fairfax publications have falsely described Ms Arndt as a “psychologist” or “clinical psychologist” at least 19 times since 2006. An online search of media archives reveals Fairfax misidentified Ms Arndt as far back as 1997, around the time Ms Arndt began writing for Fairfax. However she wasn’t misidentified again until 2006, shortly after Ms Arndt began writing for News Corp. • Almost every article published on the Daily Mail website which includes Ms Arndt falsely identifies her (eight out of 10 articles). Several times that appears to have simply been because the Daily Mail churned the story from another publication, which also misrepresented Ms Arndt’s title.
