O Tucano Toco (Ramphastos toco) é comum no Brasil Central, principalmente no cerrado. Nesse estudo avaliei a pro- dução de frutos, a abundância do Tucano Toco e seus hábitos alimentares em um mosaico de habitats do cerrado. Tanto as variações espaciais quanto temporais de abundância dos tucanos coincidiram com o perí- odo de frutificação das espécies consumidas extensivamente. Essas espécies, principalmente Virola sebifera na mata ciliar e Schefflera macrocarpa no cerrado, exibiram períodos prolongados de frutificação, além de serem conhecidas por produzirem diásporos com elevado teor de lipídeos. Por outro lado, com exceção de Eugenia punicifolia e Miconia albicans, os tucanos consumiram moderadamente muitos tipos de frutos ricos em açúcares, que estiveram disponíveis por breves períodos. Portanto, em razão do Tucano Toco explorar, durante a maior parte do tempo, proporções elevadas de poucas espécies de frutos e oportunamente alter- nar para uma dieta mais variada, ele exibiu variações acentuadas de amplitude de nicho alimentar. As pro- fundas variações espaciais e temporais de abundância, ao longo do ano, sugerem que os tucanos exploram áreas amplas e heterogênas em resposta à disponibilidade de frutos que são importantes em sua dieta.

    Chapter 19 HISTORY OF THE CASA DEL PRADO IN BALBOA PARK Of buildings remaining from the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, exhibit buildings north of El Prado in the agricultural section survived for many years. They were eventually absorbed by the San Diego Zoo. Buildings south of El Prado were gone by 1933, except for the New Mexico and Kansas Buildings. These survive today as the Balboa Park Club and the House of Italy. This left intact the Spanish-Colonial complex along El Prado, the main east-west avenue that separated north from south sections The Sacramento Valley Building, at the head of the Plaza de Panama in the approximate center of El Prado, was demolished in 1923 to make way for the Fine Arts Gallery. The Southern California Counties Building burned down in 1925. The San Joaquin Valley and the Kern-Tulare Counties Building, on the promenade south of the Plaza de Panama, were torn down in 1933. When the Science and Education and Home Economy buildings were razed in 1962, the only 1915 Exposition buildings on El Prado were the California Building and its annexes, the House of Charm, the House of Hospitality, the Botanical Building, the Electric Building, and the Food and Beverage Building. This paper will describe the ups and downs of the 1915 Varied Industries and Food Products Building (1935 Food and Beverage Building), today the Casa del Prado. When first conceived the Varied Industries and Food Products Building was called the Agriculture and Horticulture Building. The name was changed to conform to exhibits inside the building.

This is probably the easiest access to a nest of this awesome bird of prey in all of Latin America. It involves only a 5-minute car ride from the door of the hotel, 15 minute boat ride on the Napo River, and 2 easy walks of about 10 minutes each on flat but muddy terrain. The nesting pair has been recorded on this site a couple years ago by a local farmer who did not know much about the importance of the bird and therefore it remained “hidden” to the birding world until this year when the same farmer saw the couple again and this time mentioned it to the local guides who recently had been more active in terms of birding. The word spread out quickly and we were forced to tweak the itinerary that we already had for this custom tour and included a visit to the site. It was a tricky visit since just two days before our arrival, a group of scientists that visited the site recommended that no tourists should visit yet. However, since we were already there and it was only two visitors, we joined an already scheduled monitoring visit during which we stayed at the nest site for exactly 3.5 minutes, saw the bird, took a couple photos and left.

COETZEE2 1School of Biosciences, The University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK 2Ground Hornbill Research and Conservation Project, Private Bag X1644, Warmbaths, 0480, Republic of South Africa Retinal visual fields were determined in Southern Ground Hornbills Bucorvus leadbeateri and Southern Yellow-billed Hornbills Tockus leucomelas (Coraciiformes, Bucerotidae) using an ophthalmoscopic reflex technique. In both species the binocular field is relatively long and narrow with a maximum width of 30° occurring 40° above the bill. The bill tip projects into the lower half of the binocular field. This frontal visual field topography exhibits a number of key features that are also found in other terrestrial birds. This supports the hypothesis that avian visual fields are of three principal types that are correlated with the degree to which vision is employed when taking food items, rather than with phylogeny. However, unlike other species studied to date, in both hornbill species the bill intrudes into the binocular field. This intrusion of the bill restricts the width of the binocular field but allows the birds to view their own bill tips. It is suggested that this is associated with the precision-grasping feeding technique of hornbills. This involves forceps-like grasping and manipulation of items in the tips of the large decurved bill. The two hornbill species differ in the extent of the blind area perpendicularly above the head. Interspecific comparison shows that eye size and the width of the blind area above the head are significantly cor- related.
