On occasion, firmer allegations had even forced authorities into conducting formal inquiries. The Carlton bribery scandal, then, was not the first or only time when footballers were interrogated by officials from either their club or governing body over corruption charges. It was the most sensational case, however, and not only because of the guilty verdicts and harsh punishments handed down. As our new book On The Take reveals in intricate detail, it was a particularly controversial episode due to such a prominent figure as Carlton’s triple premiership hero Alex “Bongo” Lang being implicated as the scandal’s chief protagonist. Indeed, there is something captivating about scandals involving professional athletes and our fascination is only amplified when champions are embroiled, and long bans are sanctioned. As a by-product of modernity’s cult of celebrity, it is not uncommon for high-profile sportspeople to find themselves exposed by unlawful, immoral, or simply ill-advised behaviour whether it be directly related to their sporting performances or instead concerning their personal lives. Most cases can be categorised as somehow relating to either sex, illegal or criminal activity, violence, various forms of cheating (with drugs/doping so prevalent it can be considered a separate category), prohibited gambling and match-fixing.

THE IMPACT ON AUSTRALIAN RUGBY INTRODUCTION For most of its history, rugby was a strictly amateur football code, and the sport's administrators frequently imposed bans and restrictions on players who they viewed as professional. It was not until 1995 that rugby union was declared an "open" game, and thus professionalism was sanctioned by the code's governing body,’ World Rugby’.1 To some, this represented an undesirable and problematic challenge to the status quo in which the traditions of the game would be eroded and benefits would accrue only to a small coterie of talented players. To many others the change was inevitable and overdue. In various countries different combinations of veiled professionalism or officially condoned shamateurism that lurked behind the amateur facade throughout the twentieth century. For instance, it was well known amongst New Zealand rugby players, or at least this author, that their fellow Auckland provincial rugby representatives were remunerated handsomely behind closed doors through the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. This effectively allowed them to train as semi professionals that, it could be argued, aided the run of success Auckland enjoyed through the same period as the National Provincial Champions (NPC). The statistics reflect that in 61 challenges in the period from 1985 to 1993, Auckland were undefeated. The team itself was full of All Blacks that won six titles in the 1990s.     History of the Region Prior to 1969: The Region now known as Sydney South West was absorbed into the Education Regions of Metropolitan West and St. George. During 1969: The Education Region of Liverpool was established, but it was not until 1970 that many of the schools now in the Region came under Liverpool. The Liverpool Region Schools Sports Association was formed. The new Region's colours were bottle green and tangerine, with its emblem being the 'LIVERBIRD' originating off Liverpool City's Coat of Arms. During 1982: The name of the Region was changed to Metropolitan South West, in response to areas such as Campbelltown, Camden, Fairfield and Bankstown developing within the Region. With the change in name the Sports Association changed its colours to bottle green and white. During 1997: With the restructure of the Department of School Education, regions were dismantled and Areas came into existence. The Association was named Sydney South West Area. We retained our colours and emblem. Presently: The Association develops Talented Child Programs in over 30 sports which can be accessed by the 110,000 students of the Region. It also aims at improving school sporting programs by increasing involvement of staff and students. Even in our short history the Region has produced many outstanding athletes who have gone on to represent their country at the Open Age group.
