A VERY VERY LUCKY BIRD . . . Golden Retrievers . . . By Alexander Keo By Claire Coyne When you think of a Golden Re- triever, what do you think of? Do you think of a cute cuddly puppy or a large active dog? Both of these visualizations are correct! Golden Retrievers start as small, cute, cuddly puppies that don’t weigh much, but later turn into large dogs weighing up to eighty pounds! Because of its massive size, the Golden Retriever needs a lot of exercise. It should be taken on a long run or walk everyday. They should also go outside and fetch a stick or ball every so often. As long as you keep the Golden Retrievers healthy, they will live a long (and happy!) life! Another wonderful quality is their friendli- ness. They are one of the top family dogs in America. Golden On Friday, September 17th, I was in the library, Retrievers are and I looked out the large window and saw a great with chil- white bird in the grass. NEW KIDS . . . by Samantha Wiliams

Sometimes everything is not what it seems. In middle school, you go through some pretty tough times, the new kids especially. I’m new here and I really like it. It’s hard to make friends and find a group that you fit in with. To make friends, you should join clubs (see page 12), play sports and sit with different groups at lunch to get to know people. Some kids may be shy, but that shouldn’t stop you from not trying. I personally have made some great friends. Football games are also a great way to meet people. For the new kids out there, don’t just sit back and hope you’ll make a friend. It really doesn’t work that way. Be courageous -- come out of your shell and Rocky River Middle School will rock!

th Welcome, 6 Graders! Happy Halloween! By Clare O’Toole

On behalf of the newspaper staff, I would like to welcome the 210 sixth graders to our school. You will have a very fun time here! The 7th graders were in your shoes as new students last year, and we know that it can be very confusing at first. Sixth grade can be a big and hard transition because there are more responsibilities and schoolwork. RRMS has lots of activities to offer to 6th graders like clubs, dances, the talent show, and the annual middle school musical. The information is always on Channel Ten and the Rocky River Middle School website which is www.rrcs.org. I encourage you to get involved because it makes the transition easier and hopefully a Opa! Hampel Maya Liberatore little more fun. Before you know it, you’ll be in 7th grade, where there are even more new activities like trying out for cheerleading, the RRMS sports teams, and taking French or Spanish. The final highlight of your middle school career is going to Washington, D.C. at the end of 8th grade! It will be here before we know it! Have a wonderful year. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Did you know . . . you can see the newspaper on line and in COLOR! Here’s how . . . 8 FALL EDITION 2010 ISSUE I OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. GIFFORD . . . by Grace Wilhelmy When I interviewed Mr. Gifford it was so amazing! He is such an easy person to talk to. He likes a lot of sports, like ski- ing, golfing and fishing. He has two daughters under the age of ten. Their names are Lauren and Allison. His favorite restaurants are Tartine and Aladdins. Mr. Gifford worked at the high school for ten years and was an English teacher there. He taught ninth and tenth grades. I sure am glad that we have a principal like Mr. Gifford! ********************************************************************************************************************** OUR ASST. PRINCIPAL, MS. HAMPEL . . . by Clare O’Toole Ms. Hampel is our assistant principal, and she generously provided some facts about herself. Ms. Hampel’s favorite color is green, and her favorite food is filet mignon. She loves going to Tetons, WY. on vacation. She has a puggle named Opa! who’s six years old. Before she was an assistant principal, she used to teach math. Ms. Hampel said it was hard work, and wanted to try something new. Then she became an assistant principal. She used to play basketball and wanted to be a coach, so she coached volleyball and basketball for 20 years. Her college basketball coach inspired her to become a teacher.

9 FALL EDITION 2010 ISSUE I Welcome New Staff!

MRS. JOELLE GERLACK: Media Center by Clare O’Toole This year we have a new library assistant, Mrs. Gerlack, and she generously answered some questions about herself. I asked her about her favorite book and the most popular book here at school. Mrs. Gerlack’s favorite book is The Help by Kathryn Stockett, which is about African-American maids working in Mississippi in white households in the early 1960’s. She says that it is her favorite because the story is interesting and the characters seem to come to life. “I couldn’t put it down,’’ was Mrs. Gerlack’s comment. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is the book Mrs. Gerlack has checked out of the RRMS library most since the beginning of the school year. Her favorite food is shrimp and cheese grits with fried green tomatoes. She says, “I think I was meant to live in the South!’’ Mrs. Gerlack’s favorite color is black. She says, “It may sound weird.’’ She says, “I am a huge animal lover. Growing up, my parents always let us have animals…ponies, cats, dogs.’’ She and her sisters even had a squirrel named “Daisy” at one time! Mrs. Gerlack learned to care for animals at an early age and learned that animals love you no matter what. Mrs. Gerlack’s favorite animal is the horse. She also loves riding her own horse, “ Jazz”, who is a 6-year-old, black-and-white blue-eyed American Paint horse (featured in our Pet Gallery). Mrs. Gerlack has owned “Jazz” for a year and a half. Mrs. Gerlack loves to vacation in the mountains and the ocean, and she loves to watch her husband and kids play hockey. Mrs. Gerlack worked at RRHS last year and switched with Mrs. Morbitzer. Working with younger kids is the biggest difference for Mrs. Gerlack in her new job. She especially likes working with middle- school-aged kids. Now that you know a bit about her, stop and introduce yourself when you have a chance!

MR. MIKE TALLEY: Custodian Hi. My name is Mike Talley. I am currently a custodian here at the Middle School. I have been with the Rocky River Schools officially since June, 2007. I really have enjoyed and continue to enjoy all the teachers, staff and students that I come in contact with on a daily basis. You know what they say, “It’s a dirty job,” but my pleasure to do it.

MS. SHARRON BROWN: LRS Hello. My name is Sharron Brown. This is my 7th year working in Rocky River as an Intervention Specialist. I teach Barbara Wilson at the High School and TransMath here at the Middle School. I am very excited about working here in the Middle School. Everyone has been welcoming. I’m looking forward to a great year.
