Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

ELIAS Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden Claremont, California 91711 AND SUN AN-CI Institute of Botany 141 Hsi Chih Men Wai Ta Chie Beijing, People's Republic of China ABSTRACT The morphology and anatomy of the foliar nectaries and associated leaves offour species of Mallotus (Euphorbiaceae) were studied. Light microscopic observations of paraffin- and plastic-embedded spec imens were complemented with scanning electron micrographs. Leaf anatomy of the four species is typical of large mesophytic plants. Aattened foliar nectaries are shown to be composed of specialized epidermal cells. The nonvascularized nectaries consist of narrow columnar cells each with a large nucleus, numerous vacuoles, and dense cytoplasm. Subglandular parenchyma cells have more pro nounced nuclei, more vacuoles and denser cytoplasm than do typical laminar parenchyma. Structurally, these nectaries are similar to those found in other taxa of Euphorbiaceae and in other families of flowering plants. -

We report here for the first time the occurrence of a member of the genus in China, Stillingia lineata subsp. pacifica. The distribution of the genus in China is apparently narrow, known only from Pingzhou and Wanzhou Islands of the Wanshan Archipelago in the South China Sea, which is close to the Pearl River estuary. This study updates our knowledge on the geographic distribution of the genus, and provides new palynological data as well. Nevertheless, newly described or newly recorded plant genera are not discovered and reported very often, suggesting that botanical expedition and plant survey at the generic level may be advanced in China. National Museum The first descriptive treatise upon the flowering plants of any definite region in eastern North America, using the binomial system of nomenclature, is the " Flora Caroliniana " of Thomas Walter, published at London in 1788 by the famous botanical collector John Fraser, at the latter's expense. This important and historically inter- esting volume, the specimens upon which it is based, Walter's botanical activity in South Carolina, and visits by more than one eminent botanist to his secluded grave on the banks of the Santee River have been the subjects of several articles, yet comparatively little is known about the man himself. The present notice is written partly with the purpose of bringing together scattered source references, correcting an unusual and long-standing error as to the date of Walter's death, and furnishing data recently obtained as to his marriages, and partly in the hope that something may still be discovered as to liis extraction, education, and early life and the circumstances of his removal to this country. For the sake of clearness and both general and local interest these points may be dealt with somewhat categorically. -

Western Materia Medica Pain By Terry Willard ClH, PhD Botanicals Pain Pain is transmitted to the brain from sensory nerves. Substances that decrease pain either interfere with the ability of nerves to conduct messages, or alter the brain’s capacity to receive sensations. Pain may be a symptom of an underlying pathological condition, such as inflammation. It may also be due to other causes, such as bruising, infection, burns, headaches, or sprains and strains. Use caution when treating pain without understanding its cause—this may delay diagnosis of conditions that could continue to worsen without medical attention. Checklist for Pain D-phenylalanine (DPA), Vitamin B12, American scullcap, Arnica, Cannabis, Cayenne (capsaicin; topical use only), Corydalis, Cramp bark, Feverfew, Passion flower, Phyllanthus, Piscidia erythrina, St. John’s wort, Valerian, Willow. Symptoms of pain include discomfort that is often worsened by movement or pressure and may be associated with irritability, problems sleeping, and fatigue. People with pain may have uncomfortable sensations described as burning, sharp, stabbing, aching, throbbing, tingling, shooting, dull, heavy, and tight. Lifestyle changes that may be helpful: Body weight may be related to pain tolerance. One study indicated women who are more than 30% above the ideal weight for their age experience pain more quickly and more intensely than do women of ideal weight.1 No research has been found that investigated the effect of weight loss on pain tolerance. Exercise increases pain tolerance in some situations, in part because exercise may raise levels of naturally occurring painkillers (endorphins and enkephalins).2,3,4 Many types of chronic pain are helped by exercise, though some types of physical activity may aggravate certain painful conditions. -
