Resolved: That the sum of $181,225.00 be, and hereby is, appropriated out of unappropriated surplus of the general fund for the development and improvement of state park facilities, to be expended by and under the supervision of the Maine State Park Commission; and be it further Resolved: That the funds hereby appropriated shall not lapse but shall remain a continuing carrying account until such time as the purposes of this resolve have been completed; and be it further Resolved: That this appropriation shall be expended for the develop­ ment of each state park and memorial as listed below, for the purposes enumerated under their names in the amounts set forth for such state park or memorial.     Maine Lakes Report 2012 Dear Friends of Maine Lakes, This report on the health of Maine lakes reflects the effort of more than 1,000 volunteer citizen scientists who monitored several hundred lake basins throughout the State in 2012. Many of them have been doing so continuously for decades, and a few have been involved for most of the 42 years since the Maine Legislature officially authorized volunteer lake monitoring. Their work is a strong testimony to the level of public commitment in Maine to our clear, clean lakes, and it is probably not coincidental that our lakes have remained as healthy as they have under the watch of these individuals. The Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP) is believed to be the longest-standing statewide citizen lake monitoring program in America, having been formed at about the time of the passage of the historic Federal Clean Water Act. The Mission of the Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program is to help protect Maine lakes through widespread citizen participation in the gathering and dissemination of credible scientific information pertaining to lake health. The VLMP trains, certifies and provides technical support to hundreds of volunteers who monitor a wide range of indicators of water quality, assess watershed health and function, and screen lakes for invasive aquatic plants and animals. In addition to being the primary source of lake data in the State of Maine, VLMP volunteers benefit their local lakes by playing key stewardship and leadership roles in their communities. Our primary partners are the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the US Environmental Protection Agency, which provide a wide range of financial, technical and management support to the program.

The park is sited along the north shore of Sebago Lake, Maine's second largest lake (after Moosehead Lake) (Figure 1). Sebago Lake State Park is one of the original five state parks and covers over 1400 acres. Sebago Lake State Park is split by the Songo River which flows across a broad, flat valley (Figure 2). The Songo River valley is the most prominent geologic feature in the park. For the last several years my wife and I have been visiting schools throughout New England, where we have presented to over 8,000 students to encourage learning about Maine’s natural world. Before becoming an author, I was a Maine park ranger for 32-years and worked in the four corners of our State. My love of the outdoors began as a youngster when my father was a Fire Warden for the Maine Forest Service. By the age of 10, I was on patrol helping dad extinguish Wildfires. My brother Buzz was a ranger and director of Baxter State Park for 46 years. When not with my father, I spent surmners following my brother in the woods and waters that lie in the shadow of Mt. Katahdin. Due to those experiences, I know the duties and responsibilities of rangers and wardens, and I know the dangers and challenges that exist for themselves and the using public.
