  • Providing Infrastructure to Facilitate Ro-Ro Services and Construction of Breakwater at Mandawa Kaikade Jay Arun, Subba Rao2, Jaffar Patel N.3
International Journal of Scientific & Engineering Research Volume 9, Issue 4, April-2018 112 ISSN 2229-5518 Providing Infrastructure To Facilitate Ro-Ro Services And Construction Of Breakwater At Mandawa Kaikade Jay Arun, Subba Rao2, Jaffar Patel N.3 Abstract— Alibaug is located about 120 km south of Mumbai. The distance from Mumbai to Alibaug in 10 Nautical miles which is about an hour ferry ride from where catamaran/ferry services are available to Mumbai, whereas road takes about 31/2 hour to 5 hours to travel. Ferry service from 6AM to 6PM is available thought the year, except during monsoon. Speedboats from the Gateway of India to Mandwa Jetty take roughly 20–25 minutes depending on the weather and can be hired at the Gateway of India. The new jetty installed in 2014 at Mandwa ensures safety of passengers traveling by speedboat. So the Mumbai Maritime Board has decided to construct the RollOn - RollOff (RO-RO) services to reduce the travel time and that too in half the price. This will help people to reach Alibaug in very less time and so this will increase the reach of Mumbai to Alibaug. This will help in increasing the wharf area and keeping the tourist locations alive, as it will become easy to reach, it will attract more and more people and so will the government will generate revenue out of it due to tourism. The present work thus discusses the practical aspects of the construction stages of a breakwater and a jetty and also the practical executional challenges related to it.

  • Sustainable Tourism Development in Konkan: a Need of Time
Electronic International Interdisipinary Research Journal (EIIRJ) {Bi-Monthly}, 2012 May/June ISSN 2277 -2456 , Volume -I, Issue -III. SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN KONKAN: A NEED OF TIME Dr. Sardar Patil Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Athalye, Sapre and Pitre College, Devrukh, Tal. Sangmeshwar, Dist. Ratnagiri (Maharashtra, India) Email: [email protected] INTRODUCTION: Tourism is one of the largest global industries with much of the growing market focused around pristine natural as well as cultural environments. It includes coastal and marine areas, forts, forests, wildlife sanctuaries, temples, etc. Tourism plays an important and vital role in the economic development of the developing country, like India (Tourism, Planning Commision of India). It creates opportunities for employment in the service industries associated with it and include transportation (Airlines , Cruise ships and Taxicabs ), hospitality (Accommodations including hotels and resorts ) and entertainment venues (Amusement parks , casinos , shopping malls , music venues and theatres ) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruise_ship ). Tourism can benefit local communities and Government through revenue generation and employment. However, tourism can also threaten the resources by destroying habitat, disturbing wildlife, affecting water quality, and threaten communities by over-development, crowding, and disruption of local culture. In addition, conventional tourism often does not benefit the local community when tourist revenue “leaks” to outside operators (World Tourism Organization). As a result, tourism can destroy the very resources on which it depends. In contrast, sustainable tourism is consciously planned to benefit local residents, respect local culture, conserve natural resources, direct more of the profits to the local community and Government, and educate both tourists and local residents about the importance of conservation.

In 1995 WWF-India asked this editor to conduct an investigation to identify biodiversity hotspots on the sea coast between Mumbai and Goa, known in Maharashtra as the Konkan coast. The contents of this issue of our Journal are compiled from the report I submitted to WWF-India in 1997 after completing the investigation. The biodiversity hotspots that emerged after an examination of the intertidal zone of this stretch of the coast, not only took in to account the richness of species of flora and fauna recorded on the coast, but also the factors that nourish and sustain that diversity. The 'Hot spots' as visualized here are not just focii of floral and faunal interest but cover a larger area encompassing a whole range of geophysical, chemical and ecological processes. As everyone knows the Mumbai - Goa stretch of our west coast is under intense pressure of industrial, agricultural and allied development. If the species richness and supporting life - sustaining processes are not protected, the country is likely to loose a treasure trove of present and future resources affecting the lives of thousands of humans and non-human beings.
