Some elements of the Landscape History of the five ‘Low Villages’, North Lincolnshire. Richard Clarke. Some elements of the landscape history of the five ‘Low Villages’, north Lincolnshire. The following twelve short articles were written for the Low Villages monthly magazine in 2014 and 2015. Part One was the first, and so on. In presenting all 12 as one file certain formatting problems were encountered, particularly with Parts two and three. Part One. Middlegate follows the configuration of the upper scarp slope of the chalk escarpment from the top of the ascent in S. Ferriby to Elsham Hill, from where a direct south-east route, independent of contours, crosses the ‘Barnetby Gap’ to Melton Ross. The angled ascent in S. Ferriby to the western end of the modern chalk Quarry is at a gradient of 1:33 and from thereon Middlegate winds south through the parishes of Horkstow, Saxby, Bonby and Worlaby following the undulations in the landscape at about ten meters below the highest point of the scarp slope. Therefore the route affords panoramic views west and north-west but not across the landscape of the dip slope to the east. Cameron 1 considered the prefix middle to derive from the Old English ‘middel’ and gate from the Old Norse ‘gata’ meaning a way, path or road. From the 6th and 7th centuries Old English (Anglo-Saxon) terms would have mixed with the Romano-British language, Old Norse (Viking) from the 9 th century. However Middlegate had existed as a route-way long before these terms could have been applied, it being thought to have been a Celtic highway, possibly even Neolithic and thus dating back five millennia. -

Humberhead Levels Area profile: Supporting documents Introduction National Character Areas map As part of Natural England’s responsibilities as set out in the Natural Environment White Paper,1 Biodiversity 20202 and the European Landscape Convention,3 we are revising profiles for England’s 159 National Character Areas North (NCAs). These are areas that share similar landscape characteristics, and which East follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good decision-making framework for the natural environment. Yorkshire & The North Humber NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform West their decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a East landscape scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage Midlands broader partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships. The profiles will West also help to inform choices about how land is managed and can change. Midlands East of Each profile includes a description of the natural and cultural features England that shape our landscapes, how the landscape has changed over time, the current key drivers for ongoing change, and a broad analysis of each London area’s characteristics and ecosystem services. Statements of Environmental South East Opportunity (SEOs) are suggested, which draw on this integrated information. South West The SEOs offer guidance on the critical issues, which could help to achieve sustainable growth and a more secure environmental future. -

River Torne Catchment 2019/20 Jamie McEwan 2 | P a g e Executive summary A series of 'Aspirational projects' have been developed by the Torne Catchment partnership over a number of meetings. This document addresses the need to be able to summarise potential projects by their multiple benefits, costs and relevance to available funding. True to the Catchment based approach it allows us to work effectively together combining resources to progress projects from an idea and enable the effective delivery of WFD and multiple benefits for the catchment. Developed by the partnership this document provides a list of projects summarising the relative contributions each project makes towards WFD funding themes and the partnership aims. It also provides a more detailed overview for each project outlining the status, lead partner, management and location of each project alongside its relevance to the funding themes and estimated cost. Within project descriptions further detail can be found for project justification, next steps for progress, and context. Appended is a blank project template detailing how partners can go about putting forward a new idea to be considered as a project for the catchment. Through partnership review and reporting this becomes a live document and process to help support a shared vision, clarity of purpose and the ability of the partnership to act fast on relevant opportunities. Ultimately this document will be an effective way of allowing all members of the partnership to contribute toward the development of the catchment. A project idea from its beginning can be brought forward to the partnership and its progress tracked to completion eventually forming a portfolio for the Torne Catchment partnership as well as an active and aspirational document. -

No part of this publication may be reproduced in any form or by any means without the prior permission of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council 3 4 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Introducing the Local Flood Risk Management Strategy for the East Riding of Yorkshire The Local Flood Risk Management Strategy (Local FRM Strategy) sets out what the Council intends to do, working with organisations, businesses and communities, to manage the risk of flooding in the East Riding of Yorkshire over the next 10-15 years. It is of interest to all who live and work in the area, as managing the risk of flooding requires action by everyone. It is of interest to organisations that have specific responsibilities for managing flood risk such as the Environment Agency, Internal Drainage Boards and the Highways Agency, as they are legally required to act in a manner that is consistent with it in exercising these flood risk duties, and must also have regard to it in carrying out other work they do that may affect flood risk. Water companies are also legally required to have regard to the Local FRM Strategy in relation to their flood risk management functions. Putting flood risk into context As recent times have shown, many parts of the East Riding are susceptible to flooding, and the impacts can be wide ranging and severe. -

Scope of the report. The Thorne Moors Vertebrates Report 2013 is an unusually long report, not least because it continues the process of making Thorne Moors vertebrates recording as up-to-date as possible. Thus the Report contains elements beyond the routine 2013 components. Also, notice is given of a working paper on the deer of Thorne Moors, published separately in May 2014. Ever since 2012, an attempt has been made to catch up with backlogs of records and monitoring. This overall process began in the Thorne Moors Vertebrates Report 2012, and continues in the current Report. The last Report to include reptile data was that for 2008. The Thorne Moors Vertebrates Report 2013 catches up by detailing additional reptile records for 2007–08 and all reptile records 2009–12. The recorder is Steve Hiner. The present Report otherwise contains accounts of birds, mammals, herptiles and fish in 2013. Also, available additions and corrections to the Reports for 2008–12 (excluding reptiles) are listed in full. -
