RECOMMENDED SPECIES LIST

Compiled by Dr. Paul Cappiello, University of Maine and Dr. Rick Churchill, Southern Maine Technical College

The are listed by common and scientific names including where appropriate. The cultivars noted are recommended over the parent stock. The height and spread figures are accurate where the tree is growing on a favorable site.

ABBREVIATIONS FOR THE MOST APPROPRIATE SITE ARE:

S: Street Tree P: Park Tree D: Tolerates dry conditions W: Tolerates wet conditions WD: prefers well-drained soils

Where a tree is designated a park tree, it is done so because of its size or its intolerance to such things as salt or pollution. If a tree of this type is used as a stree tree, make certain it is used on the side of the street opposite the utilities and set back from the road.

The zone designation utilizes the U.S.D.A. hardiness map zones.
