Thanksgiving Favorites Across the Nation If you look at the dinner tables across the country at Thanksgiving, it’s unlikely you’ll find any two feasts that are exactly the same. Every family has its own traditions, but many homes in the same region enjoy similar holiday dishes year after year. Here are a few trends: Offerings from the ocean: Historians believe shellfish were abundant at the original Thanksgiving feast, and the tradition continues today in several regions. In New England, mussels are a popular side dish, as is oyster stuffing (a favorite in the South, too). And you just might find green bean salad with octopus on a holiday table in Hawaii. Corn of plenty: Many New England tables feature corn on the cob as a nod to the first Thanksgiving, while corn casserole or corn pudding is Lincoln’s commonly found in the Midwest. Southern cooks often serve cornbread dressing, which is made with blue cornmeal in Southwestern states. Legendary Words Containing just 272 words and delivered A berry good idea: While jellied cranberry in about two minutes, President sauce from a can remains popular throughout Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address the country, homemade versions take on is among the most famous speeches in distinguishing characteristics: Pure cranberry American history. Its introductory words sauce is a staple in Western states, the Northeast are still widely quoted: “Four score and is home to cranberry relish with citrus peel seven years ago our fathers brought and cranberry salad can be found in the South forth on this continent a new nation, and Midwest. conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” Lincoln wrote the speech for the dedication ceremony of the Gettysburg National Cemetery on Nov. 19, 1863. Just four months earlier, the three-day battle at the Pennsylvania town involved thousands of casualties and would become the turning point of the Civil War. The president honored the fallen soldiers and cited the ideals first laid out in the Declaration of Independence. Five copies of the speech are known to exist, all written in Lincoln’s hand, but each a slightly different version. The most-reproduced manuscript — and the only copy that is signed and dated — was given by Lincoln to a Union colonel to be printed as a fundraiser for soldiers. Today, it is on display in the Lincoln Bedroom of the White House. Easy Ways to Raise Alzheimer’s Awareness When President Ronald Reagan declared the first National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in November 1983, fewer than two million Americans had the disease. Today, there are more than five million. This month, join the cause to help raise awareness about Alzheimer’s. Here are some ideas: Walk for a cure: The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is an annual event that takes place in communities nationwide throughout the year, with many walks occurring in the fall. Invite friends and family to join your community’s team to raise funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Put on some purple: The color purple is used to represent Alzheimer’s awareness. Go further than just wearing a purple ribbon — why not dress head to toe in purple? You can also hang a purple wreath or banner on your door. Ask tech-savvy relatives and friends to use purple fonts and images in their personal email messages or on social media sites. Honor a caregiver: November is also National Family Caregivers Month, and this is no coincidence — Alzheimer’s takes a huge toll on caregivers as well as those with the disease. Send a card or special treat to a caregiver, letting them know they are appreciated.

Jet-Setting Job Ever since commercial airlines took off in the 1920s, flight attendants have played a key role in passenger service and safety, and this jet-setting profession has evolved through history. In air travel’s early days, cabin boys and co-pilots served as air stewards, loading luggage and handing out lunches. In 1930, Boeing Air Transport hired the country’s first flight attendants — eight young women who were registered nurses. Other airlines soon followed suit. During World War II, many nurses enlisted in the armed forces, so airlines began hiring women without nursing credentials. By the 1950s and ‘60s, the golden age of air travel, many adventurous young women aspired to become one of these glamorous “sky girls,” but the job didn’t come easily. Along with beauty, grace and charm, stewardesses had to meet rigorous physical standards — a certain weight and perfect teeth were just some of the requirements. They also had to agree not to marry or have children during their employment, which was routinely terminated at age 32. Many changes came with civil rights and employee protection legislation, as well as shifting standards in society. Men rejoined the profession, and age, weight and marital requirements for the job were lifted. Stress Less When Holiday Shopping Remembering family and friends with gifts is a holiday tradition. With some planning, seasonal shopping can be a merry activity instead of an overwhelming chore. Try these helpful tips, and you’ll have this task in the bag. Make a list: Create a list of people you’re shopping for, what you’d like to give them and how much you’re willing to spend. Take the list with you to avoid being enticed by store displays and going over budget. Time your trips: Avoid the frenzy of crowds by hitting stores during off-peak times — weekdays during the early morning and late afternoon. The earlier in the season you begin, the better, due to fewer shoppers and a wider selection. Invite friends along: You may have heard the saying “Many hands make light work.” Enlist the help of some friends, and they can offer gift advice, carry bags and simply make the outing more fun. Plus, experts say there’s safety in numbers. Use the Internet: Checking the Internet can give you an idea of prices and sales on items you’re shopping for. If you want to avoid going out altogether, consider using trusted websites to buy gifts online and ship them to the recipient or your home. Treat yourself: Once you’ve wrapped up your holiday shopping, gift yourself a treat. A cup of coffee at the mall food court, that special something you’ve been eyeing or a meal out can cap off a productive day. Tips to prevent holiday stress and depression: When stress is at its peak, it’s hard to stop and regroup. Try to prevent stress and depression in the first place, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in the past. 1. Acknowledge your feelings 6. Plan ahead 2. Reach out 7. Learn to say no 3. Be realistic 8. Don’t abandon healthy habits 4. Set aside differences 9. Take a breather 5. Stick to a budget 10. Seek professional help if you need it Take control of the holidays: Don’t let the holidays become something you dread. Instead, take steps to prevent the stress and depression that can descend during the holidays. Learn to recognize your holiday triggers, such as financial pressures or personal demands, so you can combat them before they lead to a meltdown. With a little planning and some positive thinking, you can find peace and joy during the holidays.
