  • 1. the Process of Creating Ever-More Dazzling and Appealing Consumer Settings Is What Ritzer Has Called “Enchanting a Disenchanted World” (Ritzer 2005)
NOTES CHAPTER 1 1. The process of creating ever-more dazzling and appealing consumer settings is what Ritzer has called “enchanting a disenchanted world” (Ritzer 2005). This process is not limited to everyday items of consumption but extends as well to the world of erotica and pornography. As just one example, early pornographic stag films, which were produced in the first half of the twen- tieth century, were crudely made, grainy, often with barely discernible images. Today’s pornography films, while not necessarily cinematographic works of art, are generally slickly filmed and cleverly marketed; the porn film is increasingly “enchanted.” 2. A few planned shopping centers were created in the decades before World War II, but the first modern shopping mall was created in Edina, Minnesota, in 1956. It was Victor Gruen who conceived of the “intro- verted” mall, which was distinctive because the entrances and windows of the stores faced inward to an enclosed mall rather than outward toward the parking areas (Gladwell 2004). 3. Despite the general acceptance of Victoria’s Secret window displays, occa- sionally their decorators overstep the bounds of acceptance. In 2005, the Victoria’s Secret store in a Northern Virginia shopping mall created some shopper outrage, which led to newspaper and television stories. The win- dow display went “over the top” with female mannequins that were barely dressed and in provocative poses (Dwyer 2005). The ensuing discourse about this display is an early illustration of how those who are offended by sexual displays and materials often add to the attention directed toward them. The next chapter will elaborate on how opponents of sexual mate- rial, erotica, and pornography add to the level of discourse about subjects they oppose.

  • White Chicks with a Gangsta' Pitch: Gendered Whiteness in United WHITE CHICKS GANGSTA PITCH
Williams: White Chicks with a Gangsta' Pitch: Gendered Whiteness in United WHITE CHICKS GANGSTA PITCH . White Chicks with a Gangsta’ Pitch: Gendered Whiteness in United States Rap Culture (1990-2017) Melvin L. Williams The current research analyzed the authenticating strategies employed by White female rappers to establish legitimacy in Rap culture. Specifically, the study investigated the lyrical content of 109 Rap songs, produced by seven White female rappers signed to major record labels from 1990 to 2017 in the United States. An analysis of Rap lyrics from Tairrie B, Icy Blu, Sarai, Lady Sovereign, Kreayshawn, K.Flay, and Iggy Azalea revealed a number of findings that complicated and supported Edward Armstrong and Mickey Hess’s Hip Hop authenticating strategies. These rappers emphasized authenticity in their lyrical content and chronicled the multiple systems of oppressions facing White women in Rap, among other strategies. The seven rappers also presented themes that articulated a new Hip Hop authenticating strategy: “Look but don’t touch.” This strategy indicated a shift in the tactics used by White male rappers to establish legitimacy in the musical genre and captured the unique standpoints of White women in Rap culture. The majority of the discourse in Hip Hop has primarily been about the thoughts, feelings, and ethos of Black men.1 While Hip Hop has experienced some diversity over the years with the acceptances of Eminem, Macklemore, and Ryan Lewis, and more recently, Mac Miller, Logic, and Post Malone, White female rappers still have not achieved the same level of mainstream success as their White male counterparts. The advent of a White female “rocking the mic” is still heavily questioned and scrutinized by Hip Hop artists and fans.

He was Japanese American Museum. It was a strange place to see punk reading an issue of the zine Nervy Girl. He told me that I’d inspired him to AA bands. Their sets were incredibly short. It was an amazing show, pick up a copy of the zine. Since I’d never hear of it, I asked him what he anyway. After the show, Todd spotted The Brat’s guitarist walking around meant. He told me that all my talk of a media monopoly and the need for with copies of the only record they’ve released. I looked at Todd to make independent voices to balance out the mainstream corporate voices got to sure I wasn’t hallucinating. Because I have to admit, I’ve dreamed of him. He was in Hollywood and saw the zine and never would’ve picked it seeing this record in record stores so many times without actually seeing it up if not for me. He felt embarrassed purchasing it, he said, but now he that I’d begun to believe that the record only existed in dreams (and was glad he did. “Have you heard about all these women getting killed in Jimmy Alvarado’s record collection).
