What follows is "A Treatise on Charity" in which he THE FIRST SUNDAY ponders the truth, that without love, everything is in vain. It's a beautiful and powerful contemplation to consider, as we ask the Lord to purify our hearts OF LENT and motives at the beginning of Lent. God bless you. MARCH 1, 2020 – Fr Jeremy OMV "Charity is a right attitude of mind which prefers nothing to the knowledge of God. If a man possesses any strong attachment to the things of this earth, he MASS INTENTIONS cannot possess true charity. For anyone who really loves God prefers to know Monday, March 2 and experience God rather than his creatures. The whole set and longing of his mind is ever directed towards him. 6:30 am Int of Jeanne Schwegel For God is far superior to all his creation, since everything which exists has 8:00 am Mary Forgas† been made by God and for him. And so, in deserting God, who is beyond compare, for the inferior works of creation, a man shows that he values God, Tuesday, March 3 the author of creation, less than creation itself. 6:30 am Dorothy Zipprich† The Lord himself reminds us: Whoever loves me will keep my commandments. 8:00 am Bill & Helen Frederick† And this is my commandment: that you love one another. So the man who does not love his neighbour does not obey God’s command. But one who does not Wednesday, March 4 obey his command cannot love God. A man is blessed if he can love all men 6:30 am Religious Vocations equally. Moreover, if he truly loves God, he must love his neighbour absolutely. Such a man cannot hoard his wealth. Rather, like God himself, he generously 8:00 am Margaret Sugent† gives from his own resources to each man according to his needs. Thursday, March 5 Since he imitates God’s generosity, the only distinction he draws is the person’s 6:30 am Rev. Peter Peters† need. He does not distinguish between a good man and a bad one, a just man and one who is unjust. Yet his own goodness of will makes him prefer the man 8:00 am Capt. Ringering† A charitable mind is not displayed simply in giving money; it is manifested still Friday, March 6 more by personal service as well as by the communication of God’s word to 6:30 am Int of Roger Kamp others. In fact, if a man’s service towards his brothers is genuine and if he really 8:15 am Neil Schofield† renounces worldly concerns, he is freed from selfish desires. For he now shares in God’s own knowledge and love. Since he does possess God’s love, he does 5:15 pm OMV Vocations not experience weariness as he follows the Lord his God. ISSN: 2659-0301 (Online) 1597 6610 (Print) MERCY AND TRUTH SHALL MEET TOGETHER FOR RENEWAL AND FIDELITY IN THE CHURCH: Oseni J. Osilama Ogunu, OMV1 ABSTRACT There has been an increased general interest on the theme of practice of mercy and doctrinal truths taught in the Catholic Church in recent years. Sometimes, the discussion tends to emphasize, or even pit one against the other; or it gives the impression that mercy is a new theme in the Church. This article reflects on the theme of truth and mercy which, to use the biblical expression, will meet together or embrace (Cfr.Ps.85:10). The need for such meeting in the Church life and mission has become more evident in our time many call for renewal (or reform) or for faithfulness in the Church, whether as individuals, communities and structures. The reflection highlights the meaning, value and practice of mercy and truth, drawing elements from the Sacred Scriptures, the Church’s teaching, the writings of Venerable Fr. Pius Bruno Lanteri, and others. It also considers the relationship between mercy and truth, and indicates some of the specific spheres of life, the family life included, where mercy and truth embrace or should meet in action, in reality of life. *** “Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart.” (Proverbs 3:3). INTRODUCTION There is a renewed interest on the themes of mercy and truth in Church today. These matters are explored by theologians and pastors.

VENERABLE BRUNO GUILD PROMOTING BRUNO LANTERI’S CAUSE FOR CANONIZATION Volume 1, Issue 2 Spring 2018 OBLATES OF THE VIRGIN MARY From the Wilderness of Lent Happy Lent to our friends and members of the Venerable Bruno Guild! This newsletter informs our friends, benefactors, and prayer partners of our activities as we promote Venerable Bruno’s cause for canonization and share new prayer requests received through the website for Venerable Bruno (brunolanteri.org). Please feel welcome to browse our Venerable Bruno Guild website for previous issues. In this issue you will find reflections offered by some OMV priests, the spiritual sons of Venerable Bruno. Recent prayer requests and testimonials will always be shared in our newsletter. These are shared by people who have asked us to share them with others and encourage them to pray too. We also share some news about projects in development with the Guild and ask for your prayers for their successful completion. The reflections in this issue talk about guarding against discouragement and persevering in prayer, even when one might be weary. As we navigate the wilderness of our lives and this season of Lent, Venerable Bruno’s words might offer some encouragement: “I beg you then with all the energy of my heart, not to be afraid of your past failings, but rather to let the memory of them lead you to a greater knowledge of yourself and humility before the Lord, and, at the same time, to encourage you to trust all the more in our heavenly Father, who is always so ready to welcome, forgive, and assist us.” — To Ricasoli, Carteggio, II, 170 (taken from the Bruno Lanteri website).

“And Stephen Was Heard…” A Quarterly Newsletter Fall, 2020 Volume 1, Issue 1 of Saint Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church in Kearny, New Jersey FROM OUR PASTOR... My dear parishioners and friends of Saint Stephen’s parish, In the fall of 2013, our parish newsletter, “And Stephen Was Heard” was initiated as a part of Pope Benedict XVI’s call for Catholics to enter into a “New Evangelization”. The Pope was calling on all baptized Catholics to commit themselves to a better and more disciplined approach to speaking about and teaching the Catholic Faith. For different reasons, our newsletter lasted only a few issues. That doesn’t mean it was a failure, however. Other resources and other concerns began to demand more of our staff’s time and en- ergy. INSIDE THIS ISSUE Now, we are pleased to bring back the parish newsletter with two The Church Re-Opens! ...... 2 goals in mind: firstly, to resume the call-to-arms of Pope Bene- Parish Census Update ........ 2 dict of participating in the New Evangelization. Secondly, to ex- Confirmation ...................... 3 plore other opportunities for enhanced communication with our First Communions ............. 4 parishioners, our friends and the larger community. Our number one priority must be to always keep INTEREST Jesus Christ at the center of our lives. By what we do and what Sacraments celebrated we say, we can accomplish this goal in various and beautiful under different circum- ways.
