Nick Blackwell’S Aiming to Crush Khomitsky and Win Major Nick Blackwell’s aiming to crush Khomitsky and win major honours in 2015. LONDON (22 OCT) Avoided middleweight Nick Blackwell meets fellow dangerman Sergey Khomitsky this Saturday night (October 25) in Monte Carlo and knows full well victory will tee him up for a shot at the British middleweight title in the New Year. The Trowbridge man has been guaranteed the winner of the November 29 grudge match between Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr and is eager to get his hands on the prestigious Lonsdale belt. But first he must overcome the considerable threat of Belarusian Khomitsky, who only recently shattered the unbeaten record of Frank Buglioni on these shores. “When the fight came up, I took it straight away,” said Blackwell, who meets Khomitsky over eight rounds. “It’s the perfect fight for me. “I watched Khomitsky against Buglioni and immediately it was a fight I wanted. He comes forward, he’s strong, he’s tough, but he’s not that quick. He has given world-class fighters like Martin Murray and Robert Stieglitz very hard nights, but I think I can look really good against him. “I know he’ll try to push me on my back foot but I don’t really ever get put on my back foot. Even when I spar people like Carl Froch, who is bigger than me, I’m the one putting it on him. “If Khomitsky manages to put me on my back foot, fair play to him. That shows how strong he is. But I don’t see it happening. I think he’ll be shocked by my speed and strength. I’m going to hit him harder than he expects. “The plan is to go out there and take the first round as if it’s the last. I want to be on him straight away. I’m quite a slow starter, so I’ll be warming up and doing a bit of sparring in my changing room before the fight. That will get a nice sweat going and allow me to jump on Khomitsky from the off. “I’m going in there to try and knock him out. I’m not going in there expecting to go the distance just because he’s a tough Belarusian. I’m looking to do a better job on him than anyone else has.” Though the fight with Khomitsky takes place on foreign soil, Blackwell still expects a fair amount of support on the night. After all, he will be sharing the card with two other Brits, Stuart Hall and Martin Murray, who are also involved in vital fights at bantamweight and middleweight respectively. “I was out in Monte Carlo when Martin boxed Max Bursak in his last fight,” said Blackwell. “It’s a different world. It’s a really nice place with lots of money flying about. “I get on with Martin and his dad and brothers and they’ve assured me his fans will get behind me on the night, which is nice. I’ll feel like I’m fighting in St. Helens rather than Monte Carlo. “The main thing for me, though, is that my fight will be on Channel 5. That means a lot of people at home will be able to watch me. The fact it’s in Monte Carlos is just a bonus. It’s not a bad place to make your Channel 5 debut, is it?” *** Nick Blackwell meets Belarusian dangerman Sergey Khomitsky this coming Saturday (October 25) at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco, on Channel 5 ***.

From Rookie to Rocky? On Modernity, Identity and White-Collar Boxing Edward John Wright, BA (Hons), MSc, MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. September, 2017 Abstract This thesis is the first sociological examination of white-collar boxing in the UK; a form of the sport particular to late modernity. Given this, the first research question asked is: what is white-collar boxing in this context? Further research questions pertain to social divisions and identity. White- collar boxing originally takes its name from the high social class of its practitioners in the USA, something which is not found in this study. White- collar boxing in and through this research is identified as a practice with a highly misleading title, given that those involved are not primarily from white-collar backgrounds. Rather than signifying the social class of practitioner, white-collar boxing is understood to pertain to a form of the sport in which complete beginners participate in an eight-week boxing course, in order to compete in a publicly-held, full-contact boxing match in a glamorous location in front of a large crowd. It is, thus, a condensed reproduction of the long-term career of the professional boxer, commodified for consumption by others. These courses are understood by those involved to be free in monetary terms, and undertaken to raise money for charity. As is evidenced in this research, neither is straightforwardly the case, and white-collar boxing can, instead, be understood as a philanthrocapitalist arrangement. The study involves ethnographic observation and interviews at a boxing club in the Midlands, as well as public weigh-ins and fight nights, to explore the complex interrelationships amongst class, gender and ethnicity to reveal the negotiation of identity in late modernity.

  • World Championship Boxing Returns to Terrestrial Television
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING RETURNS TO TERRESTRIAL TELEVISION LONDON (23 OCT) World championship boxing returns to terrestrial television this coming Saturday night (October 25) when Darlington’s Stuart Hall fights American Randy Caballero for the IBF world bantamweight title live on Channel 5. The show from Monte Carlo – which also features middleweight bouts Martin Murray vs. Domenico Spada and Nick Blackwell vs. Sergey Khomitsky – will commence on Channel 5 at 8.30pm and conclude at 11pm, meaning fight fans will be treated to some two-and-a-half hours’ worth of world-class boxing. Promoter Mick Hennessy, who put together the deal to bring this Monte Carlo extravaganza to Channel 5, said, “The world title fight between Hall and Caballero will be going out to a much bigger audience than any other world title fight in recent times. “In fact, not since Carl Froch and Jean Pascal contested the WBC world super-middleweight title in 2008 has a world title fight taken place on terrestrial television in this country. “Therefore, this is an extremely positive move for the sport and shows that there is still potential to break down the barriers and reach the mainstream. “Channel 5 have witnessed the talent and marketability of fighters like Tyson Fury and Kid Galahad and are aware that the general public will show an interest in boxing if the product and the fight is right. “Well, this Saturday night we have a brilliant product and a number of extremely hard-to-call fights, one of which is for a legitimate world championship. “In an era when many boxing events are marginalised due to subscription channels or pay-per-view, Channel 5 have delivered a world-class event on terrestrial television, one that can be watched by the masses.
