In the position articulated by Jan Emmens, Eddy de Jongh, and Hessel Miedema, Dutch pictures could literally be read as reposito- ries of culturally determined meaning, a meaning that was grounded in textual gen- res outside painting, most seductively those of the emblem combining word and riddle. To art historians trained in the Warburgian tradition, this method would seem as old as art history itself, but it was a novelty for the historiography of Dutch painting, which had been strongly conditioned by Eugène Fro- mentnťs influential view of this painting as essentially subjectless transcription, as an art for art's sake. The insight that these paintings might function as analogues for high literary texts and staunch moral tracts turned the paintings into quite sophisticated works in one sense - but into simple and decidedly nonvisual puzzles or sermons in another. It was this neglect of style, or, rather of representational aesthetics, I think, that The Art of Describing argued against, demand- ing a return to the visual in an art with an unparalleled commitment to opticality. Many, particularly in the Dutch academy, were unwilling to relinquish the hard-won intellectual status and moral agency of seventeenth-century Dutch painting for what struck them as a return to Romantic ortho- doxy. To others, most notably Peter Hecht, Alpers7 views overintellectualized painting and painters. On the basis of market evi- dence and scant art criticism of the period, they argued that painters such as Gerrit Dou simply recycled motifs geared to the dis- play of virtuosity. He frequently prefaced scenes of vastly different character with a telltale pile of armor, for example - a motif he had borrowed from the young Rembrandt, who was his teacher (figs. 2 and 3). This view disallowed Dutch art the capacity for articulating moral precepts, protoscientific thought, or forms of subjectivity - or at least saw any such functions as secondary or ter- tiary to competitive market interests. Yet others who were sympathetic to Alpers7 views, including myself, objected to the encompassing character of her model of Dutch picturing. ISSN: 1949-9833 The Infancy of Jesus and Religious Painting by Gerard de Lairesse Robert Schillemans Just after his arrival in Amsterdam, Lairesse painted an impressive series of six paintings on the infancy of Jesus. This article argues that the series must have been made for the Catholic South, presumably for an ecclesiastical institute in Liège or vicinity. Its character connects his painted cycle with the Counter-Reformation. Lairesse involves the viewer closely with the religious content, encouraging meditation, contemplation, and reflection. Despite his flight to Protestant Amsterdam, and his joining (as a full member) the Francophone Walloon Reformed Church, Lairesse continued to maintain warm links with the highest circles in his native Liège. In the Infancy of Jesus, Lairesse thoroughly studied the engravings of Goltzius’s Life of Mary (as well as Rubens and Rembrandt).

    Dutch Art, 17th century The Dutch Golden Age was a period in the history of the Netherlands, roughly spanning the 17th century, in which Dutch trade, science, military, and art were among the most acclaimed in the world. The first section is characterized by the Thirty Years' War, which ended in 1648. The Golden Age continued in peacetime during the Dutch Republic until the end of the century. The transition by the Netherlands to the foremost maritime and economic power in the world has been called the "Dutch Miracle" by historian K. W. Swart. Adriaen van Ostade (1610 – 1685) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of genre works. He and his brother were pupils of Frans Hals and like him, spent most of their lives in Haarlem. The topicality of this subject is due to the fact that it has not been developed sufficiently enough in historiography. The article’s scientific novelty lies in that it provides a detailed analysis of paintings based on the formal-stylistic and retrospective methods. Especial attention is given to the works of Carel Fabritius and Pieter de Hooch. The author comes to the conclusion that the paintings of the Delft artists are on the border of two genres - topographical townscape painting and the daily-life genre. In this context, they serve as the basis for the emergence of 18th century veduta painting. Although this small panel painting is widely loved and admired, its attribution to Vermeer has been doubted, and even rejected, by some. [1] The attribution of this work has often been discussed in conjunction with the only other panel painting in Vermeer’s oeuvre, Girl with a Flute [fig. 1], which has been often wrongly viewed as a pendant. [2] The emotional response elicited by Girl with the Red Hat is, indeed, different from that found in other of his paintings, for as the girl turns outward, with her mouth half opened, her eyes seem lit with expectancy. The lushness of her blue robes, the almost passionate flaming red of her hat, and the subtle interplay of green and rose tones in her face give her a vibrancy unique in Vermeer’s paintings. Unlike most of his figures, she does not exist in a cerebral, abstract world. It was the sheer quietness of the picture, the stillness of the moment, the randomness of the scene, and the simplicity of the whole thing. Yet, there is enough in the picture to have fed scholarly research for decades, to fill pages of books, and to gather huge crowds in front of it at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. During the last year of my undergraduate studies at the University of Washington, the seemingly realism of the seventeen-century Dutch paintings made me curious. But I had to look for my own niche in the field of Dutch Art History, which ranges from portraiture to comics to landscape and seascape. The likes of Vermeer and Rembrandt are over-studied, and the vastness of literature available on them, makes the challenge less appealing. It was in 2010 when I began to look at the “comical” pictures of seventeenth-century Dutch art to find a topic to write my undergraduate research paper on.

Jest to z pewnością w dużej mierze wynikiem nieświadomego często zafascynowania koncepcjami estetycznymi i metodologicznymi, pa­ nującymi w myśli o sztuce w XIX i na początku X X w. Preferowały one ponadczasowe, nominatywne, a nierzadko też psychodeliczne — jeśli cho­ dzi o stan umysłu — podejście do większości wytworów dawnej pro­ dukcji artystycznej, oraz uznawanie ich za wyemancypowane z kontekstu kulturowego świadectwa dążeń samoekspresyjnych artystów. Choć osiągnięcia poznawcze badaczy sztuki wychowanych na tego ty­ pu założeniach estetycznych i metodologicznych — stanowiących ongiś swoiste deklaracje niezależności młodej historii sztuki wobec całej re­ szty starych nauk historycznych — były w swoim czasie ogromne, trud­ no powiedzieć to samo o ich kontynuatorach działających współcześnie.
