A number of factors have contributed, like a booming economy, a new emphasis on personal fitness and active lifestyles, and a crossover from sportswear into mainstream fashion. Sportswear is seen as aspirational and cool by the nation’s youth, yet it would not be uncommon for a much older generation to wear the same top brands as their younger brothers, sisters and even children. Dramatic growth in the fitness industry, with record membership figures being achieved has also meant an increase in sportswear sales and brand awareness. These products not only provide the desired look, but also are proving extremely popular amongst consumers for the technological features used in their design and manufacture. The sports retail sector in the Republic of Ireland is part of a broad ‘specialised stores’ category that enjoys a multi-million punt annual turnover that is still growing. In a recent survey carried out in February 2000, Champion Sports combined with its recent acquisition of Marathon Sports, show an incredible 42% of the market operating out of 24 stores. Champion Sports are the biggest customers for many of the top sports brands in the Republic of Ireland. The number 1 best seller continues to be the Nike brand followed closely by adidas in both the footwear and clothing markets. An additional advantage of the Champion Sports buyers attending trade fairs, looking at fashions in major cities and studying retail trends on a world-wide basis, is the ability to identify ‘craze’ products and bring them to the high street first. THE IMPACT OF PRIZE MONEY ON MARATHON PERFORMANCE AND ACCLAIM A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Colbert Heathcott March 2015 THE IMPACT OF PRIZE MONEY ON MARATHON PERFORMANCE AND ACCLAIM Colbert Heathcott March 2015 Economics Abstract In the past century, marathon running has become a major phenomenon in society. As a result, race participation and frequency have increased in the United States over the past decade. With the increased growth of the sport, the amount of money and the overall economic impact of races have risen, causing event organizers and sponsors to face decisions involving race awards and funding. Using an OLS regression model, this study examines the impact of prize money on marathon performance and acclaim. Results reveal marathon running to be exempt from incentive theory, as athletes do not perform better as a result of increases in winning prize money. Prize money also has no significant impact on the popularity of marathon events. Other factors, such as marathon location and history, significantly affect the acclaim of a marathon event. A thorough understanding on the impact of prize money is necessary for the future of the growing sport of marathon running. AUTORAS: ANA LIZ CORDERO MALDONADO 0106445372 TANIA CAROLINA CORDERO GARZÓN 0105756399 TUTOR: ING.

TROUBLED WATERS: DIANA NYAD AND THE BIRTH OF THE GLOBAL RULES OF MARATHON SWIMMING * Hadar Aviram ABSTRACT On September 3, 2013, Diana Nyad reported having completed a 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida. The general enthusiasm about her swim was not echoed in the marathon swimming community, whose members expressed doubts about the integrity and honesty of the swim. The community debate that followed gave rise to the creation of the Global Rules of Marathon Swimming, the first effort to regulate the sport. This Article uses the community’s reaction to Nyad’s deviance to examine the role that crime and deviance plays in the creation and modification of legal structures. Relying on Durkheim’s functionalism theory, the Article argues that Nyad’s perceived deviance contributed to the community in four ways: it fostered solidarity among community members, it provided an opportunity to clarify the rules, it prompted a clarification of the hierarchy between rules, and it offered an opportunity for change and modernization of the sport.
