Ancient and Modern: What the History of Religion Teaches Us About Contemporary Global Trends Philip Jenkins Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Humanities at Pennsylvania State University Distinguished Senior Fellow at Baylor University’s Institute for Studies of Religion ARDA GUIDING PAPER Ancient and Modern: What the History of Religion Teaches Us About Contemporary Global Trends Religious developments in the contemporary world attract a great deal of scholarship drawing on a wide range of methodologies — ethnographic, economic, and sociological — but the historical component is still not as prominent as it should be. Certainly modern scholars have traced the historical origins of modern conditions, for example in terms of the Christian missions that created the flourishing churches of Africa and Asia, or the contemporary rise of Islamic fundamentalism. Having said this, surprisingly little work on contemporary conditions draws on the vast and flourishing scholarly literature concerning religion in earlier centuries, in the ancient, medieval and early modern worlds. Historians dwell in one academic world while scholars of contemporary religion inhabit another, and the two sides have little contact.1 Yet such a separation is unfortunate, in that the earlier history contains a vast amount of information and case-studies that are highly relevant to contemporary conditions. More important, perhaps, these studies tell us repeatedly that contemporary trends that we believe to be modern and unprecedented are in fact no such thing, and that they have often appeared in earlier eras. It is futile, then, to try and explain these supposed novelties in terms of strictly modern developments. Moreover, contemporary scholarship often describes processes that assume a historical trajectory, but often, the historical pattern is assumed rather than demonstrated. -

1 The Other Camp of the Saints: Comparing Christian and Muslim Narratives of Global Expansion in the Modern Era Philip Jenkins 2011 2 The Other Camp of the Saints: Comparing Christian and Muslim Narratives of Global Expansion in the Modern Era My title demands some explanation. In 1973, Jean Raspail published the book The Camp of the Saints, a futuristic fantasy that has subsequently become a cult classic for the far Right on both sides of the Atlantic. Raspail imagines how the Third World's black and brown people invade and overwhelm the White North, which has been rendered defenseless by the rise of gutless Western liberalism. Obviously, I am drawing nothing from the book’s politics, but its underlying ideas do look startling in retrospect. For one thing, it is incredible now to think that a book published so relatively recently would fail to present its apocalyptic thesis in the religious terms that we now find so familiar. In recent years, the book has been quoted ever more widely as Europe’s growing Muslim populations have become more visible, but that Muslim element is nowhere in its pages. The Asian masses of Camp of the Saints are explicitly fighting to erase Europe's failed God, and passages from the biblical book of Revelation are scattered throughout the work; but they have no alternative of their own, and are not fighting for Allah or Krishna. They are waging race war, not jihad. In different ways, the narrative of a West being overwhelmed by the religion of what we would now call the Global South (a term coined in 1980) has subsequently become familiar among both Christians and Muslims. -

The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition. -

Junayd Rehman TWIN HALVES OF MEN1: AN EXAMINATION OF THE MODERN APPLICATION OF KHULA DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS IN ACCORDANCE TO CLASSICAL ISLAMIC LAW THROUGHOUT THE MUSLIM-MAJORITY WORLD Introduction Simply put, marriage in Islamic Law is a contract.2 Unlike Western notions, be they influenced by various Christian Churches to think of the act of marriage as a holy sacrament, or by the post- Enlightenment secular state—still largely affected by the influence of the Church’s thinking of marriage as a sacrament—marriage in Islam is a contract between two parties, undertaken so they may fulfil their human inclinations and desires, of both procreation and intimacy, within the permissible boundaries of God’s law.3 The first part of this paper will give a brief overview of the concepts of marriage according to Islamic Classical law, and the history and reasonings surrounding its exercise. The second part of this paper will then delve into much of the same except revolving around divorce in multifaceted approaches in Islamic law, one of which is the khula, or the woman’s right to divorce her husband by forfeiting her mahr, which is typically a payment of money or other material possessions—ranging from anything to gold, a house, a vehicle, a parcel of land, furniture, etc.,— paid for by the groom to the bride at the time of their marriage, and is stipulated in the signed marriage contract between the bride and groom.4 The principal of khula will then be more thoroughly examined as an option of divorce in Islamic law, along with its benefits and drawbacks, -

This literature depicts the pre-mod- ern period as one in which Islamic law and ethics were in harmony—a harmony that was disturbed, if not completely upended, by the emergence of the modern state and its proj- ect of codification. Comprehensive study and understanding the philosophy of the marriage is not possible without comparison and contrast. One of the most important aspects of this study is the comparison of the marriage in the Islam and Christian. So, the present study, reviews the philosophy of the marriage in Islam and Christian, and then compares them. The main achievement of this study is that both of these religions believe that the only legitimate way to satisfy the sexual needs, make new generation and gaining love is the marriage. But there is a fundamental differences between these two religions. Monasticism and celibacy in the Christian has a special position. Christian considers the celibacy as the mean for being near to God, but in Islam the celibacy is completely rejected. Not only the marriage does not block the way to being near to the God, but also it can be the mean to reach the God.
