AiA News-Service NEWS LEONARDO DA VINCI If Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man goes on show at the Louvre, we won’t see it again for a decade Italian conservationists say they may attempt to block the loan of the famous drawing CRISTINA RUIZ 30th September 2019 11:29 BST Leonardo's iconic Vitruvian Man (1490) is normally shown for only a few weeks at a time every six years An Italian heritage group is threatening to launch a last-minute legal challenge to try and block the loan of Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man from a Venetian museum to the Musée du Louvre in Paris. The move would come just days after the French and Italian culture ministers Frank Reister and Dario Franceschini met in Paris to finalise an agreement for the loan of the famous drawing and six other works from Italy to France for the Louvre’s major Leonardo exhibition, which opens on 24 October and marks the 500th anniversary of the artist’s death. Lidia Fersuoch, the director of the Venice branch of the heritage group Italia Nostra, is now warning she may file a motion with the Tribunale Amminstrativo Regionale, the administrative court of the Veneto region, in an attempt to block the loan of the artist’s celebrated drawing of human proportions, according to reports in the Italian press. She says that if the Vitruvian Man is displayed in Paris, it will then have to go into storage for a decade. Because of its fragility, the Vitruvian Man cannot be exposed to light for extended periods. -

AiA news-service Foreign Museum Directors in Italy Breathe a Sigh of Relief Over the Reappointment of an Anti-Fascist Culture Minister The nationalist government had many museum directors worried about their jobs. There’s been something of a reprieve for Italy’s foreign museum directors, who recently feared that nationalist government officials would not renew their contracts. Now that a new coalition government has been formed, sidelining the r ight-wing nationalist League, Dario Franceschini, the center-left politician who was behind the hiring foreign experts in the first place, is back as culture minister —which means the museum directors might be able to keep their jobs after all. And with Franceschini back, the directors of Italy’s state museum may not lose the autonomy that allowed them to modernize as they saw fit, another reform that the previous culture minister had tried to reverse. “Franceschini liberated Italian museums from provinciali sm and believes in giving them autonomy and foreign managers. Now he is back in office he wants to continue with his reforms—there is no way back,” an Italian museum official told the Times of London. “All the foreign directors will be happy.” But many of the seven international directors appointed in 2015 have already made plans to take jobs elsewhere. Convinced that he was no longer welcome in Italy, Peter Assmann, who is Austrian, made plans to leave Mantua’s Palazzo Ducale at the end of his contract to run the Austrian National Museum. -

2018 Charlevoix G7 Final Compliance Report 10 June 2018 — 25 July 2019
The G7 Research Group at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at Trinity College in the University of Toronto presents the 2018 Charlevoix G7 Final Compliance Report 10 June 2018 — 25 July 2019 Prepared by Angela Min Yi Hou, Julia Tops, and Cindy Xinying Ou 23 August 2019 www.g7.utoronto.ca [email protected] @g7_rg “We have meanwhile set up a process and there are also independent institutions monitoring which objectives of our G7 meetings we actually achieve. When it comes to these goals we have a compliance rate of about 80%, according to the University of Toronto. Germany, with its 87%, comes off pretty well. That means that next year too, under the Japanese G7 presidency, we are going to check where we stand in comparison to what we have discussed with each other now. So a lot of what we have resolved to do here together is something that we are going to have to work very hard at over the next few months. But I think that it has become apparent that we, as the G7, want to assume responsibility far beyond the prosperity in our own countries. That’s why today’s outreach meetings, that is the meetings with our guests, were also of great importance.” Chancellor Angela Merkel, Schloss Elmau, 8 June 2015 G7 summits are a moment for people to judge whether aspirational intent is met by concrete commitments. The G7 Research Group provides a report card on the implementation of G7 and G20 commitments. It is a good moment for the public to interact with leaders and say, you took a leadership position on these issues — a year later, or three years later, what have you accomplished?
