Curling (PPT).Pdf Curling By:Jessica Schultz What is Curling? Curling is a sport that consists of four team mates the lead, the second, the third, and lastly the skip. These players work together to get the most rocks in the opponent's house. It is a sport played on ice with heavy rock stones that slide across the ice to score points. Curling also known as the Roaring Game was first made an Olympic sport in 1924 for men only, but curling was dropped for awhile and brought back in 1932. This sport has competition for professionals all over the world. Curling has grown a lot since 1924, men, women and both can play on their own teams now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rznyjs - l 1d g This is a video of the best shots in this years Scotties Tournament of Hearts. How it started The team sport curling originally started in Scotland in the early sixteenth century. Curling is one of the world’s oldest team sports, curling was played back then on frozen lochs and ponds for people to play on during the winter. They used solid granite stones for rocks to slide across the ice and score points. Some of the earliest curling clubs were from Scotland dating back to 1838. One of the better developments in the 20th-century was making adjustments to sliders and better indoor ice facilities. Curling has improved so much over the years and has been very appreciated by the world. How to play How you play curling is kinda simple. Curling consists of four players the lead, the skip, the second and third each get two rocks. Each player has an important job the skip is the captain which tells everybody what play is best for the team. The lead is the person who plays first they slide across the ice with their sweepers sweeping with their brooms. The sweepers job it to help glide the rocks across the ice without touching it. If one of the sweepers touch the rock then the play doesn’t count. The skip or fourth is the player making all the plays for their team. The game is played in sets, with each set having both teams get eight rocks and one team having the last rock advantage or hammer. There are 10 sets in which both teams try to score the most points to win. Scotties Tournament of He a r t s The Scotties Tournament of Hearts is a tournament for professional women curlers from all provinces in Canada. The Scotties was not official until 1982 before it was Scotties Tournament of Hearts it was sponsored by The Canadian Ladies Curling Association. The first official Tournament of Hearts was in 1982 in Regina,Saskatchewan. The format of the Scotties is round robin style. What’s a round robin? Well a round robin is an arrangement of picking all variants of a group and they usually order from top to bottom on a list and so on. The first Scotties Nova Scotia won with skip Colleen Jones and the latest Scotties team Canada won with skip Kerri Einarson. Scotties has being around for many years and hopes to continue for many more. Tim Hortons Brier The Brier is a very prestigious award for professional male curlers that started in 1927. The Brier was first made from a sponsorship from W.D Macdonald Company. Each province holds provincials and district playoffs to determine who gets to go to finals and who is the provincial winner. This method changed in 1995 when they came up with a newer and more efficient way of determining who goes to the Brier. This new method also known as the Page Playoff system is played by the winner of team 1 and team 2 automatically advancing to the final. Then the other opponent is determined by the winner of the semi-finales which consist of the lose from team 1 and tean 2 and the winner of team 3 and team 4. The Brier has changed its sponsors a lot over its years changing through sponsors such as the Macdonald tobacco company to Labatt brewery and finale settling for Tim Hortons as a sponsor since 2004. And here are some famous Canadian Curlers Sandra Schmirler Sandra Schmirler was a Canadian curler who scored 3 Canadian Curling Championships following three World Curling Championships. Sandra sadly died in 2000 at age 36 due to cancer. Sandra was honoured with a spot into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Years later in 2019 Sandra was named the second greatest Canadain female curler in history. That title has not changed since. Jennifer Jones Jennifer Jones is and accomplished Canadian female curler. Jones has skipped her team into the Olympics in 2014. In total Jones has scored 3 wins at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts of the last two decades. Jennifer is a very accomplished curler who had made her impact on the female curling community. Why I chose curling The reason I chose curling as my heritage fair project is because of a lot of things. First off my family has been playing curling for years and they always told me how great it was so I decided to try it out for myself. Shortly after joining curling I fell in love with the sport and thought it was great. My love of curling drove me to dig deeper into its history and how it came to be. Curling is such an easy yet complex sport that has been around for ages. I chose this subject to show everybody that curling is so much more than sliding rocks across ice..
