Location

Utsunomiya University is located approximately 100 kilometers north of in the city of Utsunomiya, the prefectural capital of . The traveling time to Tokyo is about 50 minutes by high-speed train and 80 minutes by ordinary train. It takes approximately three hours to reach Narita Airport by expressway limousine bus. The Tokyo Sky Tree broadcasting tower, soaring to a height of 634 meters and completed in the spring of 2012, is approximately two hours away by train on the Tobu .

Notable sites near Utsunomiya that always attract many tourists include Nikko, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Kinugawa Hot Springs and the Nasu vacationing area. Contents

2 Message from the President

The fundamental goal of Utsunomiya University is to improve the welfare of mankind and contribute to world peace through distinctive high-quality education and research as an institution open to society. The university is comprised of four faculties; the Faculty of International Studies, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Agriculture. Graduates of this university can be found all over and around the world. Utsunomiya University believes in taking the wide-view and balanced approach of training highly specialized professionals who will be active in the international arena. We accomplish this by combining a strong liberal arts education with specialized professional training. Our education system and curriculum produce a “Four Year Integrated Education.” Let me illustrate this with three examples. 1 Five years ago, we launched a new English program with the theme, “Showering our Students with English.” University-wide average TOEIC scores went up 44 points even though the focus of the instruction was not TOEIC, but learning communication skills while having fun. I hope that everyone can grow in their English skills by being “showered” with English. 2 From the fiscal year of 2013, we started a new program called “Learning+1.” This program challenges students to find and develop their own abilities through studying a wide range of subjects at the university and to take an active role in the global development of human resources. We will continue to build and support this program. 3 Lastly, I don’t want to overlook mentioning something about the employment rate. As a national university in a metropolitan area, the employment rate for Utsunomiya University graduates is top-class. Our Career Education and Services Center provides each individual with the support system needed to ensure that each student is prepared to find work.

Dr. Yoneyama was presented with the Thomson Reuters Research Front Award which goes to leading scientists for their contributions to global research in emerging research areas. This field of research is expected to develop rapidly.

5 International Exchange

We send students to our partner universities under the Student Exchange agreement. Some students receive “Student Exchange Support Program” scholarships offered by the Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO), and some students study abroad by paying their own expenses.

We have “University to University” exchange agreements with 30 schools and “Faculty/Institute to Faculty/Institute” exchange agreements with 23 schools (as of May 2013). The credits which students receive during their study abroad can be transfered to Utsunomiya University if certain conditions are met.

Memorandums of the Double Degree program were also concluded with the University of Eastern Finland and the University College Dublin. Under the Double Degree program, students can obtain degrees from both Utsunomiya University and the partner university upon satisfying the graduation requirements of both degrees.

Raising global human resources is our major mission. We back up students who work in overseas offices of Japanese companes as international interns.

Masuyama Scholarship

The Masuyama Scholarship of Utsunomiya University Foundation supports international students who are facing financial difficulties. The Masuyama Scholarship is funded by personal donations and is aimed at international students of Utsunomiya University to promote a close relationship between Japan and foreign countries.

Currently, there are 284 international students (including Japanese government scholarship students, foreign government sponsored students, self-supporting students, and exchange students) from 27 countries and regions studying at Utsunomiya University and 95% of the international students are from Asian countries (May 2013). The exchange students belong to their home university which has an exchange agreement with Utsunomiya University. They study at Utsunomiya University as Special Auditors for a year.

Center for International Exchange

The International Exchange Center was established at Utsunomiya University on April 1, 2002. The name of the organization was changed to “Center for International Exchange” on April 1, 2012 to strengthen the function of the Center. The Center for International Exchange has carried out the original objective of the center by actively providing education and advice for everyday living necessary for international students. Moreover, we have promoted study abroad opportunites and have provided advice for students who wish to study overseas.

Utsunomiya, an unfamiliar word for me, until 3 years ago when I passed the entrance exam and decided to study at Utsunomiya University. Located not far from the capital of Japan and still it is a lively city surrounded by green, a perfect place to study, for me. I will never regret that I made this decision to study here, because I have learnt a lot of new things through a brand new perspective that is very fascinating and challenging as a foreign student. Moreover, with all the events that are provided by the university, I have great chances to experience Japanese culture and, to communicate with students all over the world. 9 Department of International Social Studies Students approach various social issues associated with globalization from such aspects as international cooperation, environmental problems, and information technology. They aim to understand the structure of international society from the viewpoint of history, human rights, law, politics, economy, and other systems and acquire basic and expert knowledge required for global interchange.

Department of International Cultural Studies Students approach various cultural issues associated with globalization from such aspects as cross-cultural understanding and communication, as well as culture comparison, language, and literature. They study the structure of international society from fields such as history, tradition, religion, and art and acquire basic and expert knowledge required for mutual understanding among different cultures.

Graduate School of International Studies

The Graduate School of International Studies was established in 1999. Its aim is to provide a comprehensive, interdisciplinary methodology of education and research, and it seeks to foster the ability of students to actively address challenging international situations in the future. The Doctoral Program in International Studies is aimed at improving professional education in international affairs and at advancing the formation of multicultural public spheres. The program is designed to nurture the ability of students to take the initiative in clarifying issues, planning, implementing ideas and conducting administration.

I’m a graduate student from China and majoring in Education Program. This is my third year in this beautiful city. Actually, I fell in love with this city and this great university during my first year when I was an exchange student, I made a lot of friends and tried many things I’ve never imaged before, that’s why I decided to also pursue my master’s degree here. Unlike Tokyo，Utsunomiya’s life is less stressful, I have a lot of part-time job opportunities which helps me practice my Japanese. People here are so kind, there were several times I could not find an appropriate word to express myself when I talking to them, they were patient to help me out, at that time, I was so happy I made the right decision to stay here. I love Utsunomiya University not only because it is a great place to study, but also it offers me a lot of opportunities to get in touch with different cultures. Till now, I have lived with three different local families, they all have treated me like their own child. We tried to plant rice, went to a hot spring and also celebrated Japanese New Year together, which helped me feel the real beauty of Japanese culture, thanks to them, I never felt lonely during my studies here. I obtained my bachelor’s diploma in computer sciences in my homeland and I came to pursue my studies in Japan as a self financed student. I arrived in Utsunomiya about two years ago to begin studying Japanese in a Japanese language school called ‘Atys International Academy’. Now, I am a first year master course student in the graduate school of engineering and I am currently studying in Dr. Hasegawa Madoka's research room. I am thankful to my teacher as well as the office staff and my fellow students for their support. Utsunomiya University is a great place, not only for studies, but also for self improvement because of the constant interaction with the environment and the Japanese lifestyle. 13 Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering Mechanical Systems Engineering is a key area of engineering required in all industrial fields today. People’s lives are supported by various kinds of machines, including not only industrial products used in daily life, but also those used in agriculture, fisheries, construction and medicine. This department aims to develop engineers and researchers who will create original branches of learning and technology and drive technological innovations in the twenty-first century. Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Modern society is supported by various electronics and electricity dependent technologies. This department develops the technicians and researchers who will further expand our knowledge in these fields. The applied aspects of each study area are clearly taught and build upon the high level of knowledge imparted in the foundation courses (Math for Electrical Engineering, Electronic Circuits, and Electromagnetic), which are taught through both lecture and seminar style classes. Department of Applied Chemistry This department gives individuals the knowledge and ability to deal with problems which involve material science. The first year's curriculum emphasizes fundamental knowledge through the use of numerous seminar classes. As students advance, they are exposed to laboratory experiments through which they are able to learn how to practically apply their knowledge. This process creates individuals suited for a wide range of disciplines and fields. Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering Through the application of the latest construction techniques, this department creates technicians who excel in their creativity and are ready to give back to society in areas as far ranging as national land use to domestic residence development. 15 Department of Agrobiology and Bioresources This department provides education in the development and application of biological resources using production technology as well as advanced science and technology, which are in harmony with a given ecosystem. The educational programs are focused on the sustainability and productivity of the crops, livestock and other biological resources, and the improvement of new biological functions. Department of Applied Biological Chemistry Students approach various scientific issues associated with life science, food and environment from such aspects as material dynamics and chemistry. They will be able to contribute to society based on practical abilities for problem identification and solving in a wide range of fields. Department of Environmental Engineering Our department's scope lies in rural areas and agriculture. We set our research and education goal to support the realization of a harmonious sustainability society with advanced agricultural production, amenities in rural life, and a rich eco-environment. Graduate School of Agriculture In the Graduate School of Agriculture, students delve more deeply into the fundamentals they learned and researched as undergraduates and pursue specialized research leading to careers as specialists. A Master's degree is awarded upon completion of a course of study limited to two years. Integrated Research Center for Educational Practice Founded in 1999 Faculty of Education The Center tries to advance cooperation with organizations on and off campus related with education and conducts positive and theoretical research and guidance of the educational clinic and educational practice for teacher's training. Attached Schools Faculty of Education Founded in 1966 The attached Schools include a kindergarten, an elementary school, a junior high school and a special support school. Innovation Center for Research and Engineering Education Founded in 2002 Faculty of Engineering The essence of engineering lies in creativity and putting new ideas into definite shape. In order to promote and cultivate such an essential mind in students, the center develops and practices various education programs, such as problem-based learning, internship programs, projects, lectures by active engineers, and demonstration by skilled workers.

University Farm, Faculty of Agriculture Founded in 1949 Together with being a place for conducting practical education connected with agriculture, the Farm also contributes to the development of academic research.

University Forests, Faculty of Agriculture Founded in 1949 Comprising Funyu Forests and Nikko Forests, the University Forests contribute to the basic and applied research in forest science, as well as to the deep understanding of the general system of forest science through experimental practice.

Satoyama Science Research Center Founded in 2009 The Center’s aim is to promote a comprehensive study of Satoyama landscape in cooperation with scientists working in different disciplines, and contribute to the promotion of sustainable development in the region by proposing scientific recommendations and human resources development.

19 Financial Aid

Tuition exemption

Students who are recognized as having an outstanding academic record and as facing difficulty paying the tuition due to financial hardship can apply for a tuition exemption. Students deemed eligible for an exception based on a screening of their income and academic record may receive an exemption of all, one-half or 40% of the tuition.

It should be carefully noted that not all applicants are granted an exemption. Requests for a tuition exemption may be denied depending on the screening results.

Graduate school matriculation fee exemption

Students matriculating in one of the graduate schools who are recognized as having an outstanding academic record and as facing difficulty paying the matriculation fee due to financial hardship can apply for an exemption. Applicants deemed eligible for an exemption based on a screening of their income and academic record may receive an exemption of one-half of the matriculation fee.

It should be carefully noted that not all applicants are granted an exemption. Requests for a matriculation fee exemption may be denied based on the screening results.

Deferred payment of matriculation fee

Students matriculating in Utsunomiya University who are recognized as having an outstanding academic record and as facing difficulty paying the matriculation fee can apply for deferred payment of the fee. Deferment of the matriculation fee payment may be granted for a certain period of time based on the results of the screening process.

It should be carefully noted that not all applicants are granted a payment deferment. Requests for deferred payment may be denied based on the screening results.

Scholarship programs

Utsunomiya University has several private-sector scholarship programs. International students who have an outstanding academic record, exemplary personal qualities and require financial aid may be eligible to receive a scholarship based on the results of the screening process. It should be noted that not all applicants are granted a scholarship.

From Narita/From Haneda

From Narita Airport

By bus： is served by the Maronie-go bus. The trip takes approximately 3 hours.

By train：From Narita Airport, take any Keisei train bound for Keisei-. From Keisei-Ueno Station, it is approximately a 5 minute walk to JR Ueno Station. From JR Ueno Station, take any Utsunomiya Line train bound for Utsunomiya or Kuroiso, or any train which stops at Utsunomiya. The entire trip takes approximately 3 hours by local train, 2 hours if using the Shinkansen.

Utsunomiya may also be reached via the JR Narita Express, transfering at Tokyo to a Tohoku Shinkansen train.

From

By bus：Utsunomiya Station is served by direct limousine bus service from Haneda Airport. The trip takes approximately 3 hours.

By train：From Haneda Airport, take the Tokyo Monorail to -Chou Station and transfer to either the Keihin-Tohoku Line or Yamanote Line. Take either line to Ueno Station. From JR Ueno Station, take any Utsunomiya Line train bound for Utsunomiya or Kuroiso, or any Tohoku Shinkansen train which stops at Utsunomiya. The entire trip takes approximately 3 hours by local train, 2 hours if using the Shinkansen.

From Tokyo

JR Utsunomiya Station can be reached by both Shinkansen and local train.

By Shinkansen：From Tokyo, Ueno, or Omiya Station, Utsunomiya station is served by most Tohoku Shinkansen trains. From Tokyo, the trip takes appproximately 1 hour.

By local train：Utsunomiya Station is served by both the Utsunomiya Line and the Shonan- Line.

From Ueno Station：Take any Utsunomiya Line train bound for Utsunomiya or Kuroiso. The trip from Ueno takes approximately one and a half hours.

Please note：Trains bound for Koganei terminate before arriving at Utsunomiya and require a transfer.

From Ofuna, , , Shinjuku, or ：Take any Shonan-Shinjuku Line train bound for Utsunomiya or Kuroiso. The trip from Shinjuku takes approximately one and a half hours.

Please note：Shonan-Shinjuku Line trains bound for and do not serve Utsunomiya. Shonan-Shinjuku Line trains bound for Koganei terminate before reaching Utsunomiya and require a transfer.
