Through the expansion of the IB in Chicago, more students are provided with access to this high‐quality education in PK–12. Until schools fully embrace and implement these assessment standards as common and standard practices across the school, full implementation of the MYP is often limited by conflicting traditional grading practices. Based on scientific evidence from the most recent research in neuroscience from the west, and integrated with ancient philosophies from the east, it will provide participants with experiential opportunities to explore the impact of compassion and mindfulness practices and develop strategies as to how to incorporate them inside and outside the classroom. Join him as he discusses four priorities that are emerging: focusing on the student experience with a clear and coherent ‘One IB’ philosophy across all programmes; being more explicit about how we develop, value and measure the competencies and qualities of character that are part of the the IB Learner Profile; taking more of an “outside in” approach when we are developing curriculum and include student voices and perspectives along with global experts to complement the contributions of IB educators; finding ways to promote more real‐life applied problem solving, project based learning and deep conceptual understanding, particularly within the IB Diploma Programme. What extra-curricular social justice activities are students involved in at your school? Appleby College students are involved in many different activities. We have briefly listed some of the major activities that Appleby College students are usually involved in. • Round Square (www.roundsquare.org) – National & International Conferences, Service Projects, and Exchanges • Duke of Edinburgh (http://www.dukeofed.org/) • Clubs – Model United Nations, Debating/Public Speaking, Students Without Borders, Amnesty International, War Child, Camp Vista, Adventurers Club, Armagh, Dignitas-Appleby Youth Initiative • ASCENT - A grade nine programme involving a one-week service component (e.g., working at a Women’s Shelter or providing necessities to homeless individuals in Toronto). • Various service placements – mandatory for Grade 9-12 students. • Middle School Service days – Students go out into the community to spend time learning about different organizations, what services they provide, and actually helping others. • Theme Day & Guest Speakers – Various speakers and activities are planned each year to raise awareness of important issues and to provide students with avenues to discuss these issues. 2. What curriculum-based activities (areas where social justice are integrated into the curriculum) are students involved in at your school? • Social Science courses are offered for various grades (Examples: Race, Gender, Rights course, Grade 10 Civics, Canadian & World Politics, World Issues) which incorporate various activities to raise awareness, and promote social justice and responsibility for students.

    ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL LITERACY TEST RESULTS: SCHOOLS IN THE TORONTO DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD First-time Eligible Students 2018-2019 The attached list presents the results for each school in the T oronto District School Board for the Ontario Secondary School L iteracy Test (OSSLT) administered in 2018-19. Students who took the test wer e in Grade 10 (first-time eligible students) or in Grade 11/12 (previously eligible students). “First-time eligible students are working t oward an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). These students are expected to write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) for the first time in the spring of their second year of secondary school; this also applies to students who entered Grade 10 from out of province” (EQAO School Board Report , Explanation of Terms, 2018-19, p.27)*. The results presented here are for first-time eligible students. The overall results for the TDSB and for the province are inclu ded. Results are provided for two reporting methods. All eligib le students are “all students in the cohort who are working toward an OSSD. The only students excluded are those who are not working toward an OSSD (exempt students)” (EQAO School Board Report , Explanation of Terms, 2018-19, p.27)*. Fully participating students includes “students for whom there is work for both sessions of the administration of the OSSLT an d who were assigned an achievement result (successful, not successful).
