Shipp An Interview with Graham Masterton 2 Beth Tabler Gingerbread Lindsay King-Miller 3 From the Editor BETH TABLER Hey, there. My name is Beth Tabler, and I am guest editing the horror crossover issue of Grimdark Magazine. As a young connoisseur of all horror and science fiction movies inappropriate for my age, I remember seeing Poltergeist for the first time when I was seven years old. I had snuck down to the television while my folks were sleeping. I never quite got over demonic trees, clowns, and an old woman screaming, "Carol Anne." I remember reading my first Stephen King book, Salem's Lot, at 12. I knew at that moment that my reading life would never be the same. I remember the first grimdark book I read at 25; it was Mark Lawrence’s Prince of Thorns, by the way. I realized sometimes heroes aren't heroic, bad guys can be protagonists, and life is full of a lot more gray than I had thought. Horror and grimdark are a part of who I am and how I see the world. They are my jam. The themes of horror and grimdark have always gone hand in hand. But often, a thin gray line separates the two, a place where the story does not fall one way or another but sits on that terrifying spot between the two, where you can't quite tell what is what.

  • The Other Works of George RR Martin
The Other Works of George RR Martin Amin, Aziz, Butterfly “I think that for science fiction, fantasy, and even horror to some extent, the differences are skin-deep. I know there are elements in the field, particularly in science fiction, who feel that the differences are very profound, but I do not agree with that analysis. I think for me it is a matter of the furnishings. An elf or an alien may in some ways fulfill the same function, as a literary trope. It’s almost a matter of flavor. The ice cream can be chocolate or it can be strawberry, but it’s still ice cream.” “I've always preferred writing about grey characters and human characters. Whether they are giants or elves or dwarves, or whatever they are, they're still human, and the human heart is still in conflict with the self.” Outline ▶ Science Fiction ◦ Thousand Worlds ⚫ Tuff Voyaging ⚫ A Song For Lya ⚫ “...And Seven Times Never Kill Man” ◦ Wild Cards ▶ Fantasy ◦ The Ice Dragon ▶ Horror ◦ Fevre Dream ▶ Other works ▶ Questions & Answers are welcome at all times!

Martin In Game of Thrones creator George R. Martin published a standalone novel drenched in classic rock that featured the following: a sorceress marshaling a menacing army of loyal warriors, The Armageddon Rag faithful direwolf cut down in the act of protecting its master, and a scary henchman of well-nigh mountain-ous stature. The book, produced in the early s, is suffused with love and nostalgia for the fallen heroes of Boomer rock and roll—Joplin, Hendrix, Morrison, etc. Trilogywhich is an essential read but in truth, a very flawed model for fiction. On top of its disappointing initial sales totals, the book had the bad luck to come out at a time when post-punk and MTV were redefining the rock and roll landscape—and by definition permitting frustrated Boomers to redefine their relationship to the rock and roll dream, a possibility of which seems never to have occurred to Martin. The protagonist is Sandy Blair, a counterculture journalist who came of age at Northwestern during the Vietnam protests. Several years later their avaricious The Armageddon Rag Klein-esque manager is brutally murdered, prompting Sandy to give up The Armageddon Rag dreary novel-in- progress and track The Armageddon Rag the killer in the guise of a correspondent for Hedgehog, a decision that eventually brings him into The Armageddon Rag fold of Edan Morse, a sinister figure from the world of radical underground politics.
