Son of a Shakespearean actor, Fritz was at one time an actor himself and a mem ber of his father’s troupe. He made a cameo appearance in the film "Equinox." Fritz has studied many sciences and was once editor of Science Digest. His writing career began prior to World War 11 with some stories in Weird Tales. Soon Unknown published his novel "Conjure Wife, " which was made into a movie under the title (of all things) "Bum, Witch, Bum!" His Gray Mouser stories (which were the inspira tion for the Fantasy Faire "Fritz Leiber Fantasy Award") were started in Unknown and continued in Fantastic, which magazine devoted its entire Nov., 1959 issue to Fritz's stories. • July 15, 2000 SEEING EAR THEATRE JMS' First Audio Drama for The
July 15, 2000 SEEING EAR THEATRE JMS' first audio drama for the Seeing Ear Theatre premiered on Monday night. "The Damned Are Playing at Godzilla's Tonight" - featuring Steve Buscemi launched a 13-week series by JMS of 30 minute dramas at the Sci-Fi Channel’s website. "Rolling Thunder" - featuring Andre Braugher will be available next week.at http://www.scifi.com/set. The dramas are very much like the original radio format and I think you will enjoy the story. You'll need Real Audio loaded to listen. KEEPING UP WITH CAST AND CREW In the latest issue of TV Zone, we get our first glimpse of Marjean Holden in her new role as Atrina on "Beastmaster". We won't be seeing her episodes for a while, but she says "My character is a bit of a bad girl." Quite a change from her role as Dr. Chambers in Crusade. Ranger Bridgitte reports that: Goran Gajic (married to Mira Furlan and director of episodes like "All My Dreams Torn Asunder") recently directed an episode of "OZ", the awarding-winning prison drama produced by Levinson/Fontana. Goran's episode titled, "The Bill Of Wrongs" premieres on Wednesday July 26 on HBO. The episode will be shown several times throughout the week. A schedule of times is posted at: http://mirafurlan.simplenet.com/ozschedule.html GROUP PROJECT As Babylon 5 approaches it's premiere date on the Sci-Fi Channel of September 25, I wonder what resources we could make available to NEW Babylon 5 fans! When the show was on the air, there was a very active on-line community, the Official B5 magazine came out to provide us with information to digest and enjoy, the series would turn up in publications so that we could read about our favorite characters/actors.

A Robot By Any Other Name Could Be A Human: defining humanity through an examination of Asimovian robots by Abigail Bernasconi A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Public Health (Honors Associate) Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in German (Honors Associate) Presented May 27, 2021 Commencement June 2021 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Abigail Bernasconi for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Public Health and Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in German presented on May 27, 2021. Title: A Robot By Any Other Name Could Be A Human: defining humanity through an examination of Asimovian robots. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Diana Rohlman Being human is often portrayed as desirable in fiction. Many fictional beings, particularly robots and androids, seek out being human as a goal. Although current robotics is not advanced enough for robots and androids to be deemed sentient, the world of fiction is quickly becoming reality. With the integration of robots into society, we are confronted not only with how society views robots, but how, through the eyes of fictional robots, society and humanity are defined. This thesis seeks to explore the definition of humanity and what it means to be human. The fictional works of the Star Trek universe and those of Isaac Asimov suggest that relationships, those of friendship and antagonism, and mortality, may also define humanity. Understanding what makes us human better prepares us for the eventual integration of intelligent robots into humanity as well as to imagine what their place in our society will look like.

  • 1: for Me, It Was Personal Names with Too Many of the Letter "Q"
1: For me, it was personal names with too many of the letter "q", "z", or "x". With apostrophes. Big indicator of "call a rabbit a smeerp"; and generally, a given name turns up on page 1... 2: Large scale conspiracies over large time scales that remain secret and don't fall apart. (This is not *explicitly* limited to SF, but appears more often in branded-cyberpunk than one would hope for a subgenre borne out of Bruce Sterling being politically realistic in a zine.) Pretty much *any* form of large-scale space travel. Low earth orbit, not so much; but, human beings in tin cans going to other planets within the solar system is an expensive multi-year endevour that is unlikely to be done on a more regular basis than people went back and forth between Europe and the americas prior to steam ships. Forget about interstellar travel. Any variation on the old chestnut of "robots/ais can't be emotional/creative". On the one hand, this is realistic because human beings have a tendency for othering other races with beliefs and assumptions that don't hold up to any kind of scrutiny (see, for instance, the relatively common belief in pre-1850 US that black people literally couldn't feel pain). On the other hand, we're nowhere near AGI right now and it's already obvious to everyone with even limited experience that AI can be creative (nothing is more creative than a PRNG) and emotional (since emotions are the least complex and most mechanical part of human experience and thus are easy to simulate).

  • The Cyborg Prophecy: Reading Between Isaac Asimov's Lines
The Cyborg Prophecy: Reading between Isaac Asimov’s Lines Rudrani Gangopadhyay Jadavpur University, Kolkata Abstract: Donna Haraway’s “Cyborg Manifesto” describes the Cyborg as a conjunction of technology and discourse. It argues that a prosthesis becomes a cyborg element when it is integrated with the identity of an individual, and a cyborg is created by the almost symbiotic union of robotic and organic elements. Isaac Asimov, in his short story “The Bicentennial Man” for example, narrates the story of such a remarkable union of robotic and human parts and asserts, at the end, that the resultant system is, essentially, human. A cyborg, therefore, is ‘meta-human’, being somewhat enhanced (by the use of technology) in certain ways in comparison to a human being. There isa mass cyborgization of the global population taking place today. The kind of blurring of boundaries between exogenous and endogenous parts within the system of a human being that one had, so far, only come across in science fiction, is fast coming to life. The obvious example of prosthetics aside, gadgets like cellphone headsets, touchscreen phones and similar electronic devices have been rendered extensions of the human system, merging seamlessly with the organic identities and consequently, making cyborgs out of everyone. The relevance of literature featuring cyborgs, which have, in a way, acted as prophecies for human civilization, therefore cannot be emphasized enough. This paper explores the cyborg identity in select works of Isaac Asimov and reflect on the fast occurring cyborgization of the (meta-)human race in reality. Keywords: Science Fiction, Isaac Asimov, Cyborg, Cybernetics, Body Studies Donna Haraway, in the famous “Cyborg Manifesto,” describes a cyborg as a conjunction of technology and discourse (Haraway 149).
